Eh?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Steve, it's good to see you're still buzzing over your season ticket. Yep, you were one of the first. Congratulations. Now get it insured! I hope other fans will keep theirs too - could become collectors items!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Phoenix vs Botafogo could happen, especially if Daniel improved the relationship between the two clubs. It could become like the relationship between Atletico Mineiro and Qld Roar.

I would have to support the Phoenix though, despite my undying love for my brazilian team. Fogao!!

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that half of the fans that support a top 4 team are glory hunting supporters that would swap teams if theirs hadn't won anything for a while. Statistically this would mean that two of the people listed below fit that category:

Theprof

Gooner4life

loyalgunner

Arsenal

Which two is it?  Which of the above do you think is going to start supporting another team because the Arsenal didnt have a great season?

From a Kiwi perspective, I grew up watching all the 1st division teams play on TV, saw Sheffield United and Blackpool play at Athletic Park but chose Arsenal because my Dad is a Londoner and they were his team. It also helped that they won the double back then too. Thats why I chose them and others will have similar stories. Some will choose the most successful teams of their day, so there will be a lot of new Man U and Chelsea fans coming on board now. A mate of mine had parents from Manchester, Dad supported United and Mum supported City, my mate decided to support Stockport County (hope I've got my geography right) different folks, different reasons.

Edit: By the way, I support the Nix over any other team (unless Leopard United make a come back).

Hmm, well I support the Phoenix first and foremost club wise, although I do support Victory (hometown you see) when they're playing anyone that isn't Wellington.

Of course, if Wellington were ever to host the socceroos, I'd be in the away end for sure. Luckily it'll never happen.

With the talk of the South Coast getting an expansion team, looks like I may very well have a second team after all...

Phoenix > South Coast FC. No difficulty there

I mean hey, I support the Hurricanes over the Brumbies after all...

I have different reasons for supporting different teams, my football-following  family members have always supported Man Utd, so I do too, I had a friend who gave me Juvebtus gear when I was really young, and I've loved them eversince. Some of these reasons are much stronger than others, the fact that the Nix are my hometown club and I've supported them since it was created, easy choice really.

PHOENIX ARE #1,  AND ALWAYS WILL BE !!!
You know we belong together...

Good call. I've supported Arsenal since 1978 and had to endure some lean years in the 80's before the George Graham era. You support your team through good and bad times and I'll never stop backing the Arsenal. Same goes for the Phoenix which I highly respect with the YF section. Even though the team might be losing, they never stop supporting and chanting for the whole game. True supporters. Lets hope that continues this year.....and yes, I'll be there on 17 August.

Lean years? Arsenal? Since 1978? Top flight football, only twice finished out of the top 10, never lower than 12th, average position of 4th...  what exactly are these lean years you had to endure?

I had this same conversation with a Liverpool fan from Crewe who claimed that he's supported "his" club through thick and thin. As a 24 year old, they've finished in the top 8 his entire life. He has been ignoring his local club, who had a yo yo time in the 90s, to glory hunt so his "righteous indignation" about following Liverpool through thick and thin sounded like blx to me.

The top 4 fans have a strange definition of "lean years" and "thick and thin".... they were probably Marie Antoinette in a previous life asking why the poor, instead of protesting about not having any bread, don't just eat cake instead!

I understand your sentiment, however being the other side of the world makes it hard to have any real local loyalty to a team.

I have no problem with supporters of the top four teams, I do however think I enjoy supporting one of the (smaller than) minnow teams of the lower leagues more than I would a top four Goliath, the weight of expectation on the top four is huge.

Supporting Swindon means I don't know until 10 games of a new season if we're promotion hopefuls, play off outsiders or relegation certainties.  The FA cup still means a lot to me, getting into that third round draw is huge, hearing the "number 17:  Swindon Town will play....." and hoping it's Manyoo or Arsenal at home, although 9 times out of ten it's Barnet or Wycombe.  Signing a player for 100k is a huge thing for a league one club, thats less than 1 weeks wages for some Premiership players.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed watching the Premiership its very entertaining.  But you can keep your top four (the same top four that will be for all eternity), you can keep your 75 quid game tickets and you are more than welcome to keep your prawn sandwiches, I'll take my beloved STFC every day of the week.  If I want to watch a show Ill watch the top 4 (no disrespect intended), for football as it should be Ill stick to the lower leagues.

Swindon are my local team, I'm moving back to the UK next week and I can't wait to be at the County Ground on the opening day of the season.

The Liverpool fan from Crewe has only been here for year or two and has no excuse - glory hunting pure and simple. Gooner4 Life is a Kiwi and has no "local" English team so has understandably picked a higher profile team to follow. My observation was more about how bizarre it is when fans of the big 4 talk about sticking with their team through the bad times.... like they've had a bad time to endure. Chelsea and Man Utd at least had the decency to get relegated in the 70s, the former making a habit of it and doing it again in 1988.

As a Brighton fan, I know exactly where you're coming from with Swindon. On the FA Cup thing, I would add a fear of non-league opposition in the first round.

Agree.  I've followed my team from the bottom of the old div 4 to the Prmiership and back down again.  I've seen more promotion/relegation battles than I care to remember.  I'd rather be on that rollercoaster than the gentle "where in the top 4 will we finish,  who will we get in the semi-finals of the FA cup this year" swings of the top 4.

Oh yes. 2001. The Division 4 (to use old parlance) title. The first thing we'd win in my lifetime, coming at age 34. What a feeling. Then to follow up the next season with our first ever Division 3 (again, old vernacular) title  - the first time we'd won back-to-back titles. I went back home for those two. For the first one it was our honeymoon, which we'd delayed for a few months due to work. Are you listening Ginger - for my honeymoon my wife and I followed the Albion for their final four games of the season! Of course, we were immediately relegated the following season.

Having said that, nothing can top the last day preservation of league status in 1996/97. I came to NZ two weeks after that and given the state of the club (relegation would have actually meant extinction) I genuinely thought I would be leaving the country without an extant club to support.

I was at Brighton for the second promotion, you drew against us (with one game to go) but it was enough to pip Reading to the post.  Me and a mate decided to go to Brighton for the weekend as it was the last away game of the season.  We ended up drinking in the pub opposite the station with the Brighton crew (a little unnerving at first) and had a great night celebrating Brighton's title (but more importantly for us, Reading not winning).

It goes down as one of the best footballing weekends in my life.

comparing a club that has existed a year compared to a club that you have supported for 10 odd years and that has been founded 100 odd years ago is just stupid.

I don't think so. What really comes through this thread is that most people feel the strongest about their home-town club, regardless of how long it's been around.

Perhaps not surprising, but it was a worthwhile question to ask.

I think it depends on the origin and basis  of your support for the club that has been around for a century with your support for a decade.

Where that bond has been formed through the traditional way - your hometown club that you followed for years before coming to NZ for whatever reason - then I agree with you.

Where that bond has been formed from afar with an arbitrary selection of whatever club caught your notice at the time, then I think you're wrong.

Celtic without a doubt.
Although I love the Phoenix, I was brought up with Celtic as soon as I could walk/talk.
The club itself was founded on something I feel that affected my Ancestors deeply and has sought to improve it since.

it's kinda a stupid argument if it is even that, saying a team (bolton) that ive been following for a fair while were to play the phoenix and asking someone what team would you support.

its ridiculous, this topic just shows how bored we are and how longer the season needs to go for.

i support - bolton

if the two were playing each other wouldn't you just be friggin happy both your teams are out on the park who the bloody hell cares.

As a sports fan I have a casual (not fanatical) interest in the progress (or otherwise) of Arsenal, Wellington Lions, Hurricanes, All Blacks, McLaren, Miami Dolphins. But the team for me is the Wellington Phoenix. They represent my home city & it's a team that we can call our own. Mind you, it's a bit difficult for the Nix to play the Dolphins or race McLaren.
