Club vs Club

There has been a certain amount of talk about support for European clubs on the board recently.  I think it raises an interesting question:  If the Phoenix were to play your other team, be it Arsenal, Man U, Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale, Ipswich or even the mighty Swindon Town, who would you support?

Easy answer for me.

I have supported the Gunners since birth. So the history is there...But I still don't have the same connection to them as I do the Nix - so the Nix it is for sure.

That is really interesting, a gooner since birth but Phoenix til you die.  Cool.

Since the Phoenix came along my 'other club' is still good to follow, but the nix have become number one.

I know the football in England is technically better, but this is my home town, it's professional AND they play at a time when I'm awake. As far as I am concerned, the Phoenix are the best team in my little world!

Birkenhead United over the Phoenix anyday.

Three for me, and two for them.

In the unlikely scenario of such a game ever happening, I would have to go for the club I have supported since my birth.

Will always love the Phoenix as well, however.

In 2018, when Colchester United play Wellington Phoenix in the FIFA World Club Cup final, I will be sporting a Yellow Fever shirt.

for some reason it is easier to feel more connected to the phoenxi than chelski who i have supported since a wee boy, although you'll never beat the atmosphere of a london derby at the bridge!

Have to be Thistle, supported them since I was a lad and was a season ticket holder there for years.  It would be a no-lose situation tho' cos the Nix are the only team who I could stomach beating the Jags.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I didn't even particularly care for football until the Phoenix came  No competition. Wellington all the way.

Sorry, it would have to be Arsenal. I've supported them for 30 years, seen them play live and will support them till I die. My year goes from August to May and my mood is determined by their weekend result. As much as I want the Phoenix to succeed on the park this year, I'm just not as passionate about them yet after just 1 year.

I've supported Arsenal for about 5 years (nowhere near as long as you Gooner 4 Life!) but I still prefer the Phoenix by a substantial amount.

I have been a Liverpool supporter for as long as I can remember approximately 50 years so would have to be them, but only just 4-3 would be good, really love the Phoenix have waited 30 years since coming to NZ for them to come along.

that is because Chelsea is a plastic club with plastic fans (10k at the Bridge when they were in the old division 2 in the 80's, 20k at a Champions League game this season, etc).

It is easier to feel more connected to the Kaiser Chiefs (the club, not the band) than Chelsea

I'd support the nix, becasue they'd be the underdog (although some might disagree with that assessment . . .  )

Really my support for Everton grew because there wasn't a real Wellington team to support. However the birth of the Nix meant they are firmly my favourite team.

hard not to want the underdog to win...how could you be pleased that a prem team beat the nix? the nix would be 100 to one to win [insert Rocky theme song]

Either that or the teams in question play attractive, skillful football that creates new fans, and through this attractive and skillful football they go on to become one of the top teams in the world.

I'd give them a half each.....after all, its a game of two halves isn't it, wasn't it....

Nah, tough choice....fairly sure I'd support Chelsea over the Nix as I've been passionate about them since '93 and I have history with them....being in the Shed, living a mile from the Bridge...

BUT, the feelings and emotions the Phoenix generated in me last season were pretty special after just one game and then after just one season.

Ex-missus asked me about 2 weeks ago whether the Nix meant more to me than Chelsea.....and I had to pause before I answered.....I said they both meant more to me than she did!

Oooops!

None, except possibly Canterbury UNited Dragons in the NZFC. Although I've watched all of 0 matches this season, so I don't know if I'd say they were my "other" team.

Raises another question though, If a Christchurch based franchise was born, then who would I support?

You didn't get what I was saying. This year most will be Man U fans, if arsenal win it next year, suddenly, they'll all be arsenal fans and so on....They change clubs depending on who is winning the trophies that particular season.

not so sure about that my g/f decided yesterday she likes chelsea  because they have a "nice blue shirt" (not as nice as everton's) and "that fulla what's his name over there he's cute" (i have no idea who she was on about)
funnily enough she felt sorry for john terry for missing the penalty, then made the claim as anelka walked up to take his shot he would miss because he didn't look right walking up to take his kick e.s.p ??

first off though she started out liking utd because ronaldo was cute and she changed her mind when he cried after missing his penalty "worse than a girls blouse" i think she said

so some aren't so interested in trophies, well not silverware type ones anyway

I thought exactly the same thing. It's actually surprisingly easy to see which players are sh*tting their pants when walking up to take the penalty.

Remember thinking the same thing about Trezeguet in the World Cup final in 2006, and he missed too.

Oh got yah, I thought you were just saying people only support those clubs because they often win.

All good

My hometown club versus my club of residence?

It would have to be Brighton, but as they could only ever meet in a friendly I could be cheering on both without too many problems.

If I was a NZer supporting an English club, it would be different - like choosing between live football versus television. Thing is, I have adopted the Nix wholeheartedly and been to all the home games, but how can that displace all those years spent on the Brighton terraces?
