I emailed SKY and asked who would be doing the Phoenix games...their reply...

Thank you for your email.

The commentators for this match will be Fred de Jong, Mark Elrick and Harry Ngata.

Hope you enjoy this seasons coverage of this league.

Regards

Harry Ngata is passable.

Fred de Jong is knowledgable but drier than a water cracker and has no personality.

Elrick is just a plonker.

(Bear in mind here I've been out of EnZed for nearly twenty years.)

You know who might be good at this? Grant Turner. I remember him years back doing TV stuff and he's GOOD.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I'd like to hear Ian Smith do it. . . seriuosly. He migth not be a traditional football eprsonality, but his Son plays and he must know a thing or two about the game.

Plus he has good personality and can throw out the odd controversial remark to keep things firey. . .. . I don't see why we have to listen to ex-players all the time. Just cos they could play doesn't make them good public speakers (whihc is essentially what commentry is).

I agree with the others above.  Actually, I dislike De Jong more than Elrick.  I remember seeing a match where he and Dennis Katsanos were commentating.  Dennis asked a decent question, about why the team was always playing outswingers from the corners and why didn't they play some inswingers and Fred the Dong just ridiculed him.

I agree that Ian Smith would be an awesome commentator, but I'm not sure that they could afford him now, since he's doing plenty of Super 14 and cricket matches.

There is definitely a window of opportunity here for a young kiwi football fan with plenty of personality and knowledge.  Surely there must be a few kiwis out there that can make a better fist of it than these chumps (sorry Harry, you're not including yourself).

D'oh. Agree with everyone re Elirich. He's a top class prick in person too. I was a school age first team squad player at Papatoetoe when he was an AW and he was a complete W4NK3R. Way too full of himself.

Its no longer a problem.

Marl Elrick is clueless, it's like he's on drugs, and Fred de Jong is dryer than a nor'west wind. Ngata's OK though.

We must all be thankful, though, that Murray Deaker isn't commentating (I don't even know if he does commentate, but I find listening to him so dull).

I just saw 'football' and 'knowledge'...

and there are plenty of people, like Tommy Smyth, who show even that isn't needed to have a long career in broadcasting, so I still back myself...

unfortunately, face doesn't fit... que sera sera...

I hate this!!!! whats wrong with new zealand's sporting commentators!!!

the warriors have jason costigan who still sounds like he is going through puberty every time wairangi koopu gets the ball.

i'm embarassed to listen to it.

i think we should get the fox tv commentators to do it. bring some unity to the league.

By Sky tv puts on different commentators and on screen graphics makes the coverage look terrible and semi professional.

Yes,

Tell you what lads, there seems to be some pretty heated views on this.  Maybe we need to email SKY and point out that this isn't acceptable to fans of the game here.  I reckon Fred made a great comments man alongside Gordon Irving but he's no lead man and Elrick is a waste of space.

I guess the question is whether we've got these guys because no one has pointed out that they aren't good enough ?

Irving, De Jong, Ngata and Frankie Mac for me.

Fred would be a good analyst. He's definatly not a commentator though. Dennis is a very cool guy, fully means well. He's in my team. He's not a commentator either, he's a presenter.
Elrick is a twat, and only has default sayings as side comments.

Keep De Jong as the side comments guy.

Get Totally rid of Elrick.

Keep Dennis as a presenter.

Keep Harry as a Sideline reporter.

Get a totally new head commentator, i'm not looking forward to fred commentating.

And yes NZFA is right, our graphics look like sh*te! Even broadcasts from Fiji look better.

What's wrong with Sky's A-league graphics? They are nowhere near as bad as La Liga graphics.

As someone who is stuck up in Auckland and can't get to most of the games I really really don't want DeJong and Elrick as the commentary team. They are both so boring and unjustifiably arrogant.  Irving is so much better.

Keep Dennis and Harry as the presenter/comments guys.

someone should slip de jong some ecstasy 2 hours before he is due to commentate each game...probably the only way to extract any personality from him

Fred de Jong, Mark Elrick and Harry Ngata.   AKA Watchin, Paint and Dryata !
