Phoenix vs Perth Round 6 2007
Referee: Peter Green
Player: Vaughan Coveny
Situation: Coveny pulled down on edge of the box by last defender. Should have been red card for DOGSO but only yellow issued.
Phoenix vs Newcastle Round 8 2007
Referee: Ben Williams

Refs scared to send players off unless its a dangerous
tackle.
This paves the way for professional fouls.

Unbelieveable!!! Labatt's atrocious tackle on Coveny quite
rightly should have been red carded Quackie but then later he
elbows George in the face and gets away with THAT too!!! That guy
is a thug and should have been dismissed for either offense....and
why didn't they award the goal at the end ...Jeez, after that
shamozzle in the goal mouth with Griffith handballing then forming
a ruck????

some pretty dodgy calls in this game, but i don't think they
changed the result. we were poor.

All the things highlighted, Laybutt could and probably should have
been sent off twice, multiple hand balls, blowing the whistle when
the ball was in the 6 yard box just as we were about to score,
highlight the poor officiating in the A League which pulls it back
from being a better league.
On a side note the female lines person was almost perfect in her calls. More female officials?

We do. We had our NZFC pre-season seminar where we covered the rules and new interpretations of pre-existing ones. The challenge on Coveny in the Perth game with Peter Green as the ref was shown and while the general consensus was that he ran a great line and did all the work to be in the best place, Coveny got sandwiched, pulled down and you have to ask what part of DOGSO did that not satisfy. He simply had a poor line of sight from where he was. It doesn't excuse the fact it was wrong however.
We looked also reviewed the Adelaide game where Daniel was fouled in the box where ther was no penalty (same referee as today, Ben Williams) It was generally felt that he was inconsistent with decisions where some fouls were given, but the same ones later on were not. And then a mirror image of Coveny getting pulled down again
Its awesome stuff to review because we are learning from others mistakes. Now take todays presentations on two footed lunges (two footed studs up airborne). If it endangers player safety REGARDLESS if he plays the ball, the man of only makes slight contact its a red. Now for those watching the CCM v Roar game, Peter O'Leary has just sent a player off for that very thing but yet the commentators are saying he got it wrong. Simply put, it was a two footed lunge that had no control, airborne and endangered player safety.
Half the problem (sometimes) is that people take the commentary as gospel when in fact its way off base. Even in the Perth game when the commentators reckon Green got it wrong sending off Djublic, it was blantantly obvious that he was sent off for a 2nd yellow because of a shirt pull.
Between incompetence and commentators one day people will be happy.

Ben Williams has to be the most incompetent referee officiating in
professional football. I didn't think he could be as bad as he had
been against Adelaide, but guess I was wrong. The amount of foul
play he allowed to go unpunished - from both sides - was
mind-boggling, and once again he was very inconsistant in amking
decisions in the same way that he had been against Adelaide. The
fat bald bloke from Newcastle should've been sent-off twice, and
Old and Johnson got scot-free from some of the wilder challenges I
have seen. And the ull-time disaster kind of speaks for itself. If
I ever see him trudging up to ref a game I'm playing in, I'll pack
my stuff and be on me way...

I've got to chime in here and say this is a fantastic point. I referee the 15 man oval ball code who shall not be named, and the amount of moronic comments coming from so called experts in the commentary box is unbelievable. But your average fan figures, this guy is on tv so he must know more about the game than me.
Former NRL referee Bill Harrigan has his own talkback show now that he's retired, why not get other former referees into the commentary box?

Ben Williams should be " rested for a few weeks "[ quite a
few] so he can understand and read the rules. This decision
not to send the cart horse off was easy, near impossible to get
wrong, yet he managed to stuff it up. The GOAL at the end of the
match was another cock-up, no-one new if he had awarded it or
not. This would be the worse display I have seen from a
ref at this level, through his share incompetents[ to miss
and get so many things wrong].

It's good to see the old NZ theory of conspiracy against anything
Australian is now being proved correct by the facts.
To quote an old cliche...."The camera doesn't lie". If the FFA
wanted to look at all of the Video footage of every Phoenix game,
they would indeed choke before admitting we have a
case.
Not that they would ever look into it, let alone admit
it. Sure there have been a few occassions when our boys should have
got a yellow and maybe even a red, but we are man enough to admit
it.
Perhaps this TV coverage also gives credence to that other old
cliche......"Same old Aussies, always cheating." I think it's also
known as, "The desire to win at all costs!"
But how great is the cost?? Time for the FFA stand up to be
counted not just by Australians & New Zealanders but also in
the eyes of Fifa.

AFAIK all assistant referees are local, so they would be
officiating at the same home games. Makes me think the reason they
put a female assistant on was so Griffiths would have one less set
of nuts to target.

Personally I understand the Perth player not getting sent off, as
there was enough doubt surrounding the whole challange. From
memory, the ball was bouncing, and Cov's was just ahead of
the 2 defenders, who both could have potentially made a challenge
to prevent the shot going in. One of those decisions that
goes either way, so I accept the booking for that.
Yesterday's call was a case of the ref bottling it.
Plain and simple. Didn't have the guts to make the big
decision, and that was shown again in the last minute, when he
panicked during the scramble and flew the final whistle, only to
later award the goal. It is something I hate more than a ref
making a wrong decision, a ref being too scared to make a
decision.
All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

NZF have a media ban on referees. We are to remain the picture of neutrality at all times and while I know that some people here know who I am, if NZF found out I was posting on here, I would be in for the high jump as an active referee at a high level.

I can understand that. NZRU has similar rules for us. My point is why not use recently retired referees in the media. Put them on Football World or Reunion or wherever so there is someone with an informed opinion out there instead of some moronic former player running his mouth on how he would like the game refereed.

Because most of us think that the commentators that we would have to work with (Messrs De Jong and Dewhurst) are muppets anyway. You would be guilty by association.

I've noticed A-League referees in general allow a lot to go
unpunished, which is good for the spectacle often but detrimental
to players when they step outside the A-League and the referees are
more strict on the physical stuff. I've heard many Australians
point to the stricter refereeing at the Asian Cup for their failure
there.

The Australians referees are rated very highly (althought not all of them)
Mark Shield did the Asian Champions League Final leg in 06 and Asian Cup Final in 07. Australia were the only country to have two referees sent in 07. Shield has also been to 2 World cups. Tammy Ogston did the Womens World cup Final.

I wasn't commenting on the quality of Aussie refs in general just
they end to let a lot more go than refs from other countries, a bit
like Premiership refs compared to La Liga refs. I recently read an
article in FourFourTwo that refered to the inability of
the Australian team to adjust to the stricter style of refereeing
as a major factor in their failure in the Asian Cup. Not sure what
the make up of their squad was exactly but I would think that there
would be a large contingent of Premiership and A-League players in
there who are more used to be able to physically inpose themselves
on their opponents.
