Benji Totori is one of the best strikers in recent ASB Premiership history.. had a great scoring record there. I can see why we went for him. Island players can run riot amongst Kiwi defenders in lower leagues so why not see if he could push on? Agree the worst thing was the extension that could be activated even if he played poorly.

I think what it shows is you have to think carefully about how a players particular skill would translate at a higher level.  Totori has pace, but very little technical ability and doesn't seem to have much tactical awareness.  He runs very quickly in straight lines.  That is very easy to defend against unless you have a midfield who can get him in behind a lot.  I don't see this as a failure of an ASBP player to step up - this just wasn't a great piece of recruitment, made worse because it was fairly predictable

Personally I think that Ricki got so surprised when the All Whites lost against New Caledonia that he thought they were good, and Totori a genius on par with Messi. Unfortunately it was a case of the All Whites playing badly that day. Ricki did not click, and promptly signed Totori as the best new thing since the sliced bread.

My conspiracy theory on this one has always been that to cover his arse after we lost in Honiara Ricki signed Totori to try and show how much the island teams had supposedly stepped up.

Would have been great to sign Fenepej from New Caledonia before he moved to Troyes. BTW, the way you have written that it makes it seem like Totori is from New Caledonia.

Completey agree ^

You need to remember the person who Totori ran past to score his goals in that game - Tim Myers his team mate at Waitakere (Im guessing its not the first time hes gone past him)

I completely disagree with this. Bertrand Kai is a far better striker and I would not fancy either of them against A League defences (except perhaps our one this year)

Its probably not the first time anyone has gone past Tim Myers. Nice lad, but he is more a Sigmund-style CB than a RB

Look I think Tim Myers is a good player - But once you have played in the same team as someone for 3-4years you are gonna know their weaknesses

That statement works both ways... Myers should have also know Totori's "tricks"

So this article seems to confirm that none of the off contract players will be offered a new contract until the new coach is appointed...

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/new-coach-the-priority-as-phoenix-look-to-future/64629

Risky call, but I like that the club is giving the incoming coach as much of a say in recruitment as possible.

Seems logical really. The kiwi guys off contract aren't likely to sign else where (although maybe Bertos will), Gemerio already said he wants to wait until after U20 WC.

According to the poll Gameiro, Bertos, Hogg and Cernak (in that order) are the fans favourites to get re-signed.

Gameiro probably a long shot to sign anyway.

Hogg unlikely to get picked up elsewhere, unless he does something barmy like sign in Finland or India or some stupid shit like that.

So most of the risk is around losing Bertos and Cernak.

Would that be so bad?

Heard from a contact within the club today that 7 players are likely to be getting cut. Personally I would be surprised if that will be set in stone before the new coach is appointed but that was the number that was stated.

Nothing new then, that is the same number as we had leave the club at the end of last season, and it's a pretty standard turnover for an A-League club. Nothing to see here, move along.

I did not intend for my comments to appear as though I was shutting down discussion. I'm presenting my opinion, and my opinion is that this piece of "information" isn't interesting, and it's not different from the norm at all. I probably could have chosen better words to present this opinion though, you're right. Feel free to disagree with my opinion, that's what these forums are for.

Ok, I sort of get you.  In any event, I personally think the number 7 is less important than looking at the number of changes we end up with to the starting XI.

I think we need 2 changes to the back 4 (CB and a FB - although that could be solved possibly by moving Manny back there (his midfield days are over for me), probably two new central midfielders plus Hernandez.

If was being completely ruthless I'd maybe look at shifting on Manny because of our guys on contract he's probably the one other people would be interested and I'm not convinced he's that good.

I agree with you completely, it's not really that relevant if Jimmy Downey is going to be replaced by another squad player who isn't going to play any games for us. What is relevant is the number of "key" players that we are going to be bringing in. Last season that number was two, Brockie and Huysegems. You could also say that Moss, Boyd and Fenton could also be included in this category.
If the Manny that showed up in Round One can come back, I think he still has a place in the midfield, but since he couldn't replicate that form a single time in the rest of the season I think it is highly unlikely that the old Manny will come back. I would also move him back to RB, but only on the condition that we sign a decent DM to fill the role Manny was doing this year. The games where we didn't have anybody sitting in front of the defence putting pressure on the midfield were the games that turned into a trainwreck (notable 5-0 against the Mariners).

Relax,  I wasn't trying to present it as some scoop of the century. The off season is going to be pretty quiet around here if that's the threshold for posting.

Here's a scoop: Fulham called up Gameiro late last week and asked for him to come back early, originally the plan was for him to stay until the end of the month. He flies back today.

The odds of him playing in a Nix shirt next season are next to zero IMO.

My guess is that we wanted him to stay here until the end of the season so we didn't face a situation where he would jet off during the middle of the playoffs, so we negotiated the loan until the end of April. Now that our season is over, Fulham may have decided that he isn't gaining anything here anymore, and called him back to train with them rather than letting him effectively have a 3 week holiday.

This is all me speculating though, I don't actually know the reasons why they recalled him.

pish.  Gingers may have no souls, and smell of wee, but they also make damn attractive females.  Male gingers, I kind of see your point.
