Wellington Phoenix Sign Australia U23 Attacker

Wellington Phoenix have signed experienced 23-year old Australian representative Jaushua Sotirio on a one-year deal, as the club continues the recruitment process for the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season.

Sydney-born Sotirio made his debut for Western Sydney Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League in 2013 and has gone on to make 81 appearances, scoring 11 goals.

The attacker made 13 appearances in the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season, scoring three goals. His goal against Melbourne City was awarded the Hyundai A-League January goal of the month.

Sotirio has also made a combined 13 appearances for the Young Socceroos and Olyroos, including a winner against Indonesia in the AFC U-19 Championship.

Head Coach Ufuk Talay believes Sotirio will be part of an exciting new look attack in Wellington.

''Jaushua brings in that experience, having been involved with Wanderers in the AFC Champions League but he is also still very hungry to improve and succeed.

''I’m looking to bring in players that work hard and aim to continually raise their game and Jaushua fits that bill.''

Sotirio is looking forward to the new challenge that awaits him in New Zealand.

''I have spent most of my career in Sydney so it was time for a change and a new challenge and Wellington represents the perfect opportunity to prove what I can do.

''There’s some really exciting young players at the club and I believe we can create something special in Wellington.''

Someone please tell me what to think about the new guy. Thanks.

Well that came out of nowhere. Not a bad depth pick up, but certainly won't be looked at as our main goal threat. If this is the standard of our squaddies, we may be ok but wouldn't want to sign any players worse than him.

He wasn't rated highly by WSW fans. But he is still young and has pace. Can score goals. If he can improve under Talay then could well be a good pick up.

Could be a good signing, could be a bad one too. Like Rufer last season no one thought he'd be good enough but proved us wrong this guy is still quite young might just need a fresh start to get him going.

He reminds me a lot of Nikita Rukavytsya, except less quick, and with a less cool name.

Stop blaming Rudan... it's pathetic.

Everyone that has signed with him are grown men, capable of making their own decision. They obviously felt that what he and the club offered was better than what we were putting on the table. That's not Rudan's fault, that's ours as a club.

Nah, we don't have to like or absolve him. Was he working for us?

Not any better, but a bit more experienced.

Waine is younger than Sotirio but with him and Singh we'll have some young blood upfront.

Still needs a decent A-League class forward for them to work with. We may not be able replace Krishna easily, but we should be able to find someone of Williams' level to hopefully guide the young guys.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

11 goals in 81 games is not 'Can score goals.'

Thats 3 goals across 24 game season which is close to what we are doing currently. Louis Fenton does better than that from FB.

I don't disagree. Room for improvement for sure. Can Talay get more out of him. Certainly don't think he's upto leading the line.

Lot of his appearances would have been off the bench though. 3 goals in 700 minutes played last season, that's a goal every two and a half games (albeit it's a small sample).

From what I've heard I get the picture we've signed an Adam Parkhouse v2

somewhere between being better than Parkhouse, and being worse than Mileusnic. But he's only 23 so who knows, Uffie could work his magic. He does like a long range belter every now and then

Better than Parkhouse.

Good squaddie, but not a starter at this stage IMO.

Nice to see a stream of signings though.

David Williams only scored 14 in his first 110 games as a senior pro. Then within two seasons at Melbourne City he was their top scorer.

Soccerway says a total of 3,669 A League career minutes.

So equivalent to 11 goals in 41 full matches.

Not applies with apples. I think he was a winger when he began and a portion of those games were in Europe

Isn't  this guy meant to be a striker?

I assume you're replying to me and it's as apples to apples as you're going to get. They are both Australian winger / strikers and Wikipedia even lists them as almost the same height. Also; David Williams scored 14 goals in his first 94 games in the A-league. And the next season was the top scorer at his club. He was a couple of years older by this point though.

It might just be me, but even though we've got just 10 players signed up, there seems to be a bit of zip about getting a squad signed up this off season, which I think is quite a positive - no umming and ahhing over trials and who's coming and going, just straight down to business - Sounds like homework is being done which is pleasing to see. Long way to go of course, but the blocks just seem to be falling into place a lot quicker than they did last year when I think we only had 15 or 16 players signed by the time the first round of FFA Cup came around. Just a bit of an observation I guess. By all accounts there could be a few more signings over the next couple of weeks which will be good to see as well.

As for Sotirio signing, I think it's a good pickup, has experience for a young fulla in both A-League & ACL which is handy considering what we've lost this off season and gives us an option in that front third. Just another piece of the puzzle, now to make all the rest of the pieces fit.

Happy to see he also shares my birthday (albeit several years apart...) so from that I'm going to back him to do a job for us this 19/20 season!

Equally bad scoring record, but he looks ok with the ball.
