Not sure why it's in the News section but I agree completely (well apart from the streaker statement).

Awesome stuff from Costa - I want to see a Smeltz/Costa upfront partnership in a 442/352.

Streakers are always a laugh - lighten up.

Yes! Costa needs more game time, he was our most dangerous player by far and his pace could really cause problems in the A-League as well, especially as many of the defenders are old and slow.

The boy looked pretty good, I have to agree.  Him and Felipe playing off Smeltz, with Daniel wide left and Elrich wide right, would be a very attacking line-up.  Stick one defensive midfielder and a decent back four behind them and that'd be a very good side.

By saying that George is the 'right barbarouses' also,
with alot of talent....you might see 2 Barb Bro's in the Phoenix sometime in the
future!  who knows

As for the Chant.....I LOVE IT, how about making something rhyme with BARB
since BARBAROUSES is such a mouthful!?!?

A friend of mine text'd me because she heard one of the commentators pronnounce it

It's a contextual thing. At the Ring of Fire, Costa's the right one. At Newtown, it'd George.

But as I told Costa the other day, and as you pointed out, "We've got both of the right Barbarouses's!"

Barbarouses definitely needs to make the 1st X1 or to make the bench at least. Great pace, great touch; just like Zullo and Kruse from Queensland.

I think we should stick with 3-4-3 at home with

------------------------Moss

----Rees--------------Dodd------------------Lochead

Daniel------------Aloisi-------------Johnson--------Lia

Barbarouses------------Smeltz------------Coveny

Bench; Brown, Filipe, Old, Ferrante

First of all, I thought Costa was good - obviously amped up for it and great to see him get out there and run at players.

But to say that 20 minutes in an exhibition game against a tiring defence warrants a place in the starting eleven in the Phoenix's biggest match of the season next Friday (let's face it - if we lose, we're bottom) is a very long bow to draw.

Costa may well be the future of the Phoenix - and I would love nothing more - but please, let's not put undue pressure on the lad by suggesting he should be thrown into the starting lineup ahead of the likes of Elrich, Lia and Felipe.

Costa's day will come - I just don't think that day should be next Friday.

inclined to agree LF1,

Costa looked good, partly i suspect because Ricki has been bringing him on slowly, various runs of the bench so far, his turn will come either off the bench or in the last game of the season - if we are clear of 8th position

given our current 5 man midfield, i think he'd get caught out of position, because he seems to be a player who plays off instinct - which is great if you don't have any real defensive responsibilities

I'm sure he can defend, he got back well behind the ball once or twice - but I'd prefer a fairly experienced line up v Perth, hence my comment on the line-up thread about getting Aloisi back in

ok was it me or was he outstanding during the L.A Galaxy game??

he made some nice passes

I still think he lacks the physicalness to match up against some of the other players in the league, needs to be a bit stronger on the ball yet but looks to be a promising future player

Also agree. I'm glad to hear he did well because in his brief appearances so far he's looked way out of his depth. An exhibition match is ideal for a young guy to have a go without pressure, and it will give him more confidence next time he gets on the pitch.

Costa can't be compared to Zullo and Kruse: those guys are fully formed products of the Institute of Sport. They have had time and money lavished on them in a way young NZ players can only dream of. Naturally they are a step up the ladder. We should expect that it will take a while before Costa matures.

dang i just created a topic about barbarouses cause i didnt see this one, sorry.

He was awesome, he's only 17 right? i bet he's NZ's next premier league prospect, he was really dangerous the whole time he played last night and he is extremely quick. Pitty he doesnt get much game time.

NOT just you :)

if you hear the commentators as I did this morning when I watched the game again you'll see that even they were going on and on and on about how good costa did and complimented his every move.

He definately played with class.

I mean how many opportunities did he create for a goal and they just didn't come into fruition.

I'll admit I don't know the ins and outs of soccer but I know talent when I see it.

Hahaha what a funny thread, gave me a god laugh.

Guy's he's come on in the past in a REAL game and hasnt stood out at all. It's easy to look good in a friendly kick around when no pionts are at stake.

no it's not f**king easy! he's got pace, timing and natural instinct...you can see that in an exhibition game just as well as any other. I'm not saying he's got good enough positional play or defending skills yet, but that'll come. I don't see why this is a funny thread at all..

i dunno, I sort of agree with nightz, lets not jump the gun here, he did play well, but I see no one is mentioning that he was pushed off the ball three or four times easily as well..

WHAT are you on about?  why would it be easy to stand out in a friendly game rather than one that counted???  ESPECIALLY playing against beckham.

He's 17! of course he's not going to be as experienced as someone like Aloisi

Give the kid a break, and support NZ born sportsmen....we're not saying he's the amost amazing soccer player out there, I'M saying he played well last night and I'm looking forward to seeing him play more, cause I KNOW he will shine....AGAIN.

and nightz, since you found this thread funny, and you laughed so much, may I suggest you be careful you don't pee yr pants?

The funny thing is, that after that cameo performance several are no suggesting he should be in the starting line up. Remeber Brookie anyone.

You sure about that?

http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3671

Two people have both put on lineups, both with Costa on it. Of those who haven't posted lineups, NOBODY has suggested otherwise.

Oh, and to make it three - I'd love to see him start up front paired with Smeltz.

...and i don't necessarily think that Costa should start, just that he should be given credit for a good little performance against a decent team, that's all

the Queensland youngsters get pushed off the ball all the time, but they're still dangerous players

My only criticism was that he wasn't often taking a shot at goal; rather he was trying to set up our strikers every single time.

I like Costa and he had his moments and showed plenty of speed, skill and raw talent

BUT, he also turned the ball over several times (if he'd been Felipe he'd have been pilloried by the forum), got horrendously dispossessed on half way (and was only spared blushes by an equally horrendous finish by Pavon I think), and took the wrong options in and around the box (I can particulalry remember one cross when Daniel was a mile open about the penalty spot if he'd pulled it back, although he was certainly not the only one to take poor options in the box, it was endemic).

He WILL be a very good player.
