Maybe.. but who would you play instead? Its a tough decision I say...

Pretty ineffective for the whole match except for one magic moment, when his experience came to the fore.

Na, not a waste of space. He is out there and enough of a threat to have to be marked- making space for Smeltz. Not going to argue whether he should be on in place of Draper/Costa/Hearfield/whoever- until I see them I trust that he must be the best person for the job. Good break into the box tonight, not playing poorly, keep him out there until there is a better option.

For a striker, he never looks like scoring ...

Dive? Its funny how we all watch the same incident but we all have different opinions on it. To me there is no way he took a dive, he got a fair whack and went down. Was he looking for the penalty? Maybe/Yes. Did he dive? No
Im with bigtobz on him overall, probably because we talked about it on the bus home, but while we don't have any one else as a viable option up front i think we should stick with him.

Agreed with top statementYes the player comes in with the tackle, and yes he goes down looking for the pen. but for me he dived.

Clearcut dive in my book. He didn't need to go down at all. No contact was really made until he was already on the ground, so logically that wasn't what brought him down. Should've been a goalkick or corner.

Coming from a fan who has to watch Cristiano Ronaldo every week, I will say that wasn't a dive. For me a dive is simulating something out of nothing. Cov's got challenged and fell over it, perhaps on purpose. But I don't think it's a dive as such, just making more out of a challenge. Is it OK? Well, I don't mind it when the players I like do it, but it's certainly a truckload better than taking an actual dive.
However, if what LG is saying is true (I'll need another replay) then it could fit into what I reckon is a dive.

I don't think that makes sense. Never mind.

Was I watching a different match? Covs made space, caused trouble and had to be heavily marked. Tying up more than your fair share is an artform worth applauding IMO.

I listened to the match rather than watched it, so I won't make any comment on this particular penalty... however I'm not entirely convinced by him. Covs seems to look for penalties more than he looks for the goal, he's won us a fair few, but he has also got a few cards for going down far too easily in the box. I don't think he really compliments Smeltzy as well as would be desireable, however until a suitable replacement can be found he's all we've got for now. I'm for maybe trying to find room on the bench for Drapes (lets face it, we always replace Covs anyway, so why not with another striker for once?) and seeing what he can bring to the game.

totally not a waste of space.give him sum credit hes 37 odd and running round like a teenager.Shows a lot more ticker than a lot of other players in the squad.

Agreed, always dives. Just cause he isn't foreign we don't give him enough stick. Always looking for the foul first, pass or shot second.
But he is still of some value because he still has some pace and is decent in the air. Career coming to an end so can't expect too much.

I call that more using experience, dragging in the foul.
diving is acting like you have been fouled, IMO, when you have barely been touched. Covs was bought down, to an extent, and he didnt go down like a bag of rocks.
Plus, OK hes not the best option in the world, but he is the best option in our squad

Covs has been a great servant in all aspects of the game from the old NSL days, VIC league and now the A-League!!

Yes waste of space. Its time for him to move over and let some new blood in.
You see him walking around the field doing sh*t all sometimes, being lazy and standing like a complete t**ser.

One thing he's not is lazy - he does a lot of chasing. But it doesn't say much for the state of our attack that he's one of our main goal scoring hopes. He toothless up front, I'm afraid.
Knackers yard beckons.

He's only six months older than Feverish...and a better speller...
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think Covs is past it.
He did brilliantly to get the penalty , he was looking for that, but really I think hes well past it.
Legend in his day, but maybe should be coaching rather than playing now

He's been a great player in his day and I think at times he's played well for the Nix, he always gives it everything and runs himself into the ground. In saying that I think he's done his dash.
Every other A-League side (with the exception of Perth and maybe the Jets) have two if not three good strikers, we only have one and it really shows. If Smeltzy got injured (pray that never happens) we would be absolutely stuffed for a goal scoring threat.
Free up Cov's space for someone else I reckon. But he should be applauded for his contribution on the way out.

Coveny is a good solid player at this level and was probably signed for the job he is currently doing. Granted, this should be his last year with us and we should be able to get a younger player for the same or less money that will give us a little more.

We have better options for a spot in the starting XI, but not as a second striker, so as long as we are playing 442 he's the one we should expect to see. However I don't think 442 is the formation we should be using and if he wasn't in the position of being a support striker we could make better use of him off the bench, unless of course we bring in Draper.
You know we belong together...

He's past it. Not good enough to be a starter in this league anymore.
