Good news!

Cov's has signed so our strikeforce is at least looking healthier.

At 35 is a 2 year deal one too many? Maybe the reason this took a while.

I would expect that his second year will predominantly be based around a semi-coaching role. Basically, someone to help develop some of the younger guys and take on a senior role - I wouldn't expect that he would have too much game time

Possibly - good point. Great signing for us this season though.

Yeah - I agree. I think he'll be a great addition and is a proven goalscorer - something the previous monachy's didn't have  (unless you count Simon Yeo as one)

Hardly suprising tbph.

I know he is 35. But I would like to hope he will net a few goals for Phoenix this season and next. We would obviously like to be in a situation were we didn't have to rely on him for the full 90 mins for the next 2 years. It would probably mean we are struggling up front.
But for this season he should at least be one of the more reliable strikers even if it is his experience in feeding other players; like Costo.

If we build it, they will come...

Age doesn't matter.

Case in point - Teddy Sheringham.

Teddy is the exception rather than the rule though - the man is a freak!

Coveny is class. a bit of a query about the two years but he does have plenty of good football ahead of him. Good signing.

Hopefully they will pair up Costa with Cov's, what a great guy to learn the trade from.

smart move from the nix, goalscorer and will help the younger guys in the squad as well

Covney is terrible! We dont want someone that can score once every couple of match we need one that can score every game! Its just going back to the old knights ways if we bring in these old guys....If we want old guys get rufer!

But remember that Rufer was still the best player for the Kingz when he did play!!

Coveny is exactly the sort of player needed for the likes of Costa - open your eyes and look at the bigger picture fella

This is a good signing.  Covs will add experience, the knowledge of how to play and win in this league.  He will have the ability and nous to hold the ball up when required; he still will also add goals.  He is a threat at set pieces.  Also we know he will not just be turning up for the money, the man has shown he has heart over the years.  Well done Ricki Herbert.

this would be going back to the old way  we could sign  che, and noah and the other hacks that play for knights. Covney is a gun, proven goal scorer.

You need shooting. A goal every second game would be a fantastic conversion rate. A goal every game is highly unrealistic.
Danny Allsopp was top goal scorer excluding finals with 11, which is a conversion rate of pretty much 1 every 2nd game (considering theres 21 rounds). So if Covs did get a goal every 2nd game, it would be fantastic as he'd be up there with the top scorers.

Awesome news!  A hard worker and a great target in the air with his height.  But the best of all he's a NZ'der!
COYN!  Beijing, China.

Yep good signing his off field presence will far outweigh his onfield conributions mind you.

Still if he can walk away with 7 or 8 goals throughout the seasin that would be a good turnover.

Coveny's a great signing, Che and Noah would have been good to.

He is a good signing. Brings huge amount experience to the team especially good to our 3 U20 NZ players.  BUT don't rely on him to score goals for us.  At amost 36, fittness & consistancy will be the problem & I don't rate him as our No. 1 striker anyway.  I really hope we sign a quality import striker

Great signing and a goal every second game would be fantastic that would be 2 goals short of the total the Knights scored all of last season (13).
So bring it on.
For a person who is 35 years of age he still has heaps of pace.
Looking at him playing for the Jets last year hes wasn't a 90 mintue player but with a full pre season training he will last the full 90.
Looking at his  playing history correct me if i'm wrong but he also played for Porirua Viard ( Western Suburbs) in the Central League I think it was in the late 80's???

I've only seen him play once live, it was years ago for NZ at North Harbour Stadium. Can't remember who it was against but it was part of a tournament, maybe one of those WC qualifying ones, he was paired up front with someone Jackson. My point is - he was the only guy who looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. I can't remember if he scored or not but I came away thinking that he was a pretty special player. Wonder why he didn't do anything elsewhere in the world except Australia?

Coveny is a great reader of the game and will offer mnore than just goals. I sometimes think that football should have a statistic for assists. Coveny will score plenty of goals but he will set up plenty more.

He sounds like a good signing, scores a decent amount of goals.
Seems a bit old for a two year deal though?

Yeah Hard news going by reports he could be announced as a Phoenix signing this week, I still say Adrian Webster is a far better bet than Plodder.

I think cov will do alright he may not play 90 but 70-75 should give us enough from him and who else could we get so cheap

Stunning stuff.  We need a goal scorer, a man who creates the opportunities.  Even if he lasted one season or was a 60 minute player, he's still worth it.  Welcome to the Phoenix Nest Covs.

I'm not 100% sure aabout Covney, BUT any club in the world would be happy with a striker who scored in every 2nd game. I'll be delighted if Covney scores 10 or 11 goals (based on a 21 game regualr season)
