....to quote Buffon II, and he's dead right. What the hell was that travesty? I realise that Grand Finals often don't make for great games but that was an embarassment, and to see the brawl at the end, well, let's just say it did the image of A League football no favours at all. Aloisi has gone way down in my estimation, the whining bastard. Screaming at the linesman "You f*cking saw that, you f*cking sh*t" was a lovely touch.

Verbeek thought so highly of the occasion he came dressed in an old brown jersey!

Aloisi was doing it the whole game and comes across as a bad tempered bastard, rather than as a professional whom wants to win desperately.perhaps he's believing in his own publicity too much?

Yes that was a handball in the last minute but often have we seen games when everyone saw something so blatant and the match officials were busy watching something not connected to the play. I mean if they were fiollowing the play, they too would have / should have, seen it.

Joel Griffiths early yellow and the hope was on for the second one or a red but it was not to be. A sad game indeed.

Yeah that handball in the box in the last moments... That was terrible. Could have changed everything... I was loving Aloisi, his fire and that, was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Final was pretty rubbish though...

Anyone  see what happen to the Ref over the send off at the end - Danny Vukovic apparently " hit"  Mark Shields. How Shields miss that handball is incredible, easy call for any ref to make at any level.Very poor final.

Ps; Any Refs - did Shields restart the game after the send off without a goalkeeper, thought you had to have a goal-keeper ?

I thought Aloisi said to the assistant "you f...ing cheat" which in my mind is far worse. The problem is that players are allowed to get away with it. The assistant should have summoned the ref over immediately and told what what Aloisi had said. Give him a straight red I say.
Mark Shields and his assistants were copping an earful from both teams all the game. They shouldn't have to, they are reffing the game to the best of their abilities, just as the players are playing to the best of theirs.
And what about that free header that Aloisi missed? If there was any justice the ref would have run up to him and screamed in his face "you useless pile of muck!".
The officials let the players get away with far too much dissent, not just in this game but in any top game you watch nowadays. It needs to be eliminated from the game.

I don't know, maybe I have a soft spot for Aloisi but I thought good on him. I love the intensity and his mouthiness, brilliant. Well, entertaining at least.

ccm were shocking, newcaslte after they scored didnt seem to play much football which is fear enough i guess but it was an average game. last 10 were ok bcos it was so tense but otherwise very dissapointing. at least with a newcastle win we can say we beat the champions

If that was the refs & linesmen's "Best" I'd rather trust my grandson to do the game and he's only 10. Even though the game it'self meant nothing to us, the hand ball was more blatant than Maradonna's.

good point

players throughout the world give refs way to much crap, and the kids get to see it and decide it's the right thing to do

Lonegunman, you are talking drivel. Mark Shields is the top referee in this neck of the woods.
Too many players, coaches and fans are prepared to blame the ref for all their own team's shortfalls. The fact is if John Aloisi had buried the earlier header as he should have then all this carry-on wouldn't even be happening. CCM did not lose the final because of a refereeing error - although I acknowledge there was one - they lost it because on the day they weren't good enough to win it. They didn't have  a player who stepped up when required like Bridge did.

And speaking now as an England fan, I have always excepted that they lost to Argentina in 86 because England weren't good enough to win that day. Yes, Maradona punched the ball into the net, but if Lineker had done the same at the other end (which he probably should have tried from Barnes' cross, knowing what had gone before...) I would have accepted that too.

And finally, for those who cry "show some consistency" at the refs, well, you tend to be the same people who also spout off about refs "showing a bit of commonsense". You can have one or the other, not both.

Fair points made about me.

At the end of the day Sheilds & the linesmen blew it on a very important decision at the most crucial of times.

Having now probably seen the replays etc, I would be very curious to know What Mark Shields  etc thinks of it now.

Regardless of the actions of an official, they need to be respected during the course of the 90 minutes. Scrutiny and/or criticism can wait, even if the match is a grand final. Of course, emotions can make that difficult...

I just hope there isn't a blowup over whether the failure to call handball and give the penalty leads to collective whining a la Wayne Barnes/All Blacks vs France (please forgive my dipping into minor sporting codes for an example)

Players never make mistakes in games, never miss easy shots into an empty net or make defensive blunders that cost games so the ref shouldnt make mistakes either.

oddly enough "Mis of the night" other than the hand ball must go to that CCM player at the end who lined up a power volley only to send it 90 degrees away from the goal. I think it scuffed the top of his boot.

Agree, he missed the most crucial decision of the match. If he had wave the protests away claiming it wasn't hand ball fair enough but looks like he just miss the whole incident which for a ref at this level [ any level really for such a basic decision] is poor. Don't think Mark Shields will be watching any replays

The A/R that got punched in the goolies by Griffiths, and didn't tell the Ref it warranted a red card was dropped from the A-League

Interesting what the CCM fan said on another thread about words spoken between Shields and both Lino's.
