We got about 5,000 at the Ring of Fire last night - anyone know what the crowd was at the rugby today?  I'm hoping it was less.

I saw the stands in that game and my bet is they counted the 9000+ season ticket holders even if they weren't there.  If 20000 walked through the turnstiles 7000 of them must have spent the afternoon on the concourse and not in their seats.

I was trying to judge from the TV coverage and the crowd looked reasonably sparse; if they were just on one side of the pitch I would guess around 8,000; if the crowd was spread out round the ground (ie on the other side from the cameras), then maybe 12,000 - 15,000 ?

yeah - there were a lot of yellow seats

i cant believe there was anything like 20k - some creative accounting for sure

16,000 i'd say, most turned out to see Tana off. The phoenix should in general get better crowds than the lions

How are the numbers counted. For Lions games the turn styles are switched on so count every entereant. For phoeinx they are set to free wheel, do they just count sales and miss the junior crowd?

There seemed to be more people on the side I sat (behind the cameras) than the other. You'd think they'd sell tickets on the TV side first to boost the appearance of crowd sizes on TV

i think with season passes they had pre sold 20,000 i dont think they got it but it still would have been 10-15. i think the crowd was for tana cos u cudnt pay me to go and watch manawatu. certainly the fact crappy teams are playing the lions in wellington this year will help phoenix crowds the first couple of weeks

There was also a large contingent of Manawatu fans in the stands who had travelled down for the game. The cheering following Manawatu's lone try rivalled our own. Made for a good atmosphere. Their flans were a class act so I'll have to behave myself next weekend when I go up to Palmy to watch them play my home Bay of Plenty (dammit! :P)

And you're def. right on the crappy teams. No disrespect to the teams we are facing, but when the closest thing we have to a big-name team visiting us has been Otago, you can't deny the schedule has been bad for the Wellington rugby spectator. Great for us Nix fans though :D

(As much as I love both sports, I want the Phoenix to do better this year, if only to build up the fanbase)

There were nearly 35,000 at the match. They were all told to dress up as seats!!!

It's not the size, it's the quality. Maybe the Fever could do some spot prizes to encourage seat sitters?
