Just wondering out of interest how many people were at the game. I heard there was just under 15k, is this true?

Yeah, 14 400 and something. Biggest NZ crowd at a club match in our football history. Bet the old record by a fair bit after about 13 000 went to a Kingz game (according to the commentators).

I am a regular at the stadium and follow rugby, mostly, and I arrived 10 minutes before kick-off. I was amazed how many people were still trying to get in. I was speaking to one of the security officer's afterward and she was saying they underestimated the walk-up crowd that turned. I would have said their was a little more than the 14,421 and there was certainly a better turnout in the corporate boxes than the previous night. Well down Phoenix an oustanding product. I'll be back.

Well done Captz, I think that Wellington people can quite happily get behind their local rugby teams  as well as a football team.
I really think that the atmosphere at todays game will open traditional rugby people to a while new avenue of team supoport

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

I think the fact that the A-League is played in the summer will help immensely.

I guess large numbers of them didnt decide until the day to go.  I bet they wont make that mistake again.  I heard some people didnt get in until nearer halftime

talked to my next door neighbour who said he gave up and went home at 4 cos the queues were still huge.

Told him to buy a season ticket then

As much as I love the oval game, rugby just cannot compare to last night. I can now happily say I prefer football to rugby.

It was crazy.  I had a friend at work who only for to see the second half.  She mentioned that see watched as quite a few people walked away.  Imagine if they had gotten in.  The crowd would of been even bigger (obivously).

What is it with us.  I agree Cosimo, if you want to go, get to the game early!!!!!

I am gutted.  I had a $50 bet with a rugby supporting mate of mine about 2 months ago, saying we would get 15,000 people at the first game.  We get 14,500 with 2,000 leaving because the queues are too long

you almost got won that $50 Frankie (shame a moral victory isn't as useful as readies)

it does seem a bit strange that the club was saying we might get 15,000 plus in the media, they knew the pre-sale numbers and yet it still looked like Dunkirk out there,

I suppose there'll never be enough ticket booths for all the late -comers, but questions need to be asked

the club, the game - neither can afford to turn fans away

just to let you know that from tv, sounded like a proper english football crowd, was brilliant. But yea, bit gutted to lose 2000 at the gate, the other 14,000 were epic

We would have hit 20,000 if the long queues had been able to purchase tickets, I heard tales of people looking for a ticket agency on Sunday morning, and not finding one.

Then arriving at work today I have met at least 20 people who decided at the last moment to go and upon seeing the lines returned to local boozers to watch the game.

SORT IT TICKETEK

I don't wanna be the killer or anything! (oh and before I continue I'll say that being at the game was everything, and the crowd that was there did do the opening game justice) .....

but I gotta admit i was kinda disappointed when the figure came up. after all the hype and the advertising bombardment of the last couple months, and after the promisin pre season results, I was proudly proclaiming to all my unconvinced rugby mates that at the least we'd get 20000!
but yeah, not really complaining that much cos the crowd there was mint, and it's bigger than anything auckalnd could be bothered sending to their grounds!

I really don't think tiketek can be solely held accountable for all the stories. I remember walking up and seeing the massive lines of people who were just queing up to collect their pre booked tickets! arrange for them to be posted! or better yet just go in and buy them in person! Wellington definitly has a mentality that becuase everything is close and convenient, we can get away with just strolling up 10 minutes before kick off and gettin in sweet az. not gonna work people!!!

The crowd was mint, and even though 2,000 may have walked because of the lines, they still showed and hopefully heard what a ripper it was and will come along next time.

Reckon we'll top that number in a couple of weeks

There were at least 250 more people than officially stated as none of the kids from the clubs who marched out went through a turnstile. Plus I also heard between one and two thousand walked away  because of the huge queues. Buy your tickets early next time. LETS CRACK 20,000.

I would have to say it was the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at ANY sporting event in NZ, and I have been to many Rugger bugger tests !!!

i dont think its just welly, im from dunners originally and you always hear that events havent sold many tickets right up till the last day or so when everyone suddenly decides to go and you'd always have a good turnout. i guess we're all a bit tooo laid back when it comes to these things

i thought the numbers were good and even though i would love to see more i dont think that will lift the team beacuse there will be the same noise which will be the 2000 odd singing. just imagine after a few games when 6000 people know the chants and are singing it will be 3x as loud. i want to see more people singing and chanting

Would 20,000 have been the biggest sporting crowd in NZ this year apart from AB tests, maybe Black Caps 20/20?

25,000 at the Warriors game on Sunday, plus some of the Super Rugby games would have been getting that figure.

Leave it out!  Over 14 000 was an incredible turn-out!  Thank G we had all the "hype and advertising bombardment"  or else it may have just been a turnout like the preseason cup.  It can only go up from here!  Positive thinking is underrated... Hell, perhaps we could even thank the samba band on cuba st (saturday) for the turnout

If the 'Nix keep having good results, then the corwd numbers will defo increase. The interest in the club seems to be increasing, just from the amount of people coming up to me a work (which is mostly full of rugbyheads I might add) and talking about Sundays game, even had a couple asking about yellow fever and the retro ricki t-shirts

For atleast westpac go to www.westpacstadium.co.nz for crowd numbers. When there click on public information. Next near the top in a grey box you will find facts and figures, click on this. Then along the side click on "What's been on at the Stadium" this will show you the crowd numbers of all events since the stadium opened in 2000.

The weather played a big part on Sunday and it was forecast to be calm and sunny as long as three days out from the game so the club/ticketec should really have been a bit more organized .A  late sunny Sunday  afternoon with bugger all else on coupled with a new show in town that sounds promising and has been extremely well marketed,  logic would suggest that there would obviously be a late surge in interest!
Hopefully  it will all be sorted out for the next home game.  Kiwi Jambo2007-08-28 17:04:32
