Hello, you say you're not a fan and don't follow the A-League, so out of curiosity what led you here to enquire?  Are you a journalist?  why aren't you a fan?  Do you live in New Zealand?  Thanks

With that other less popular Weelington team, the Horrorcanes, doing well so far this campaign it will be interesting to see what effect that has on our crouds.

I understand its hard to measure such things but would be awesome if their crouds were crap!

Well all the leagues with weird rules interest me :D

So when I have the time i follow the MLS and the A-League but it's pretty rare unfortunately.  I'm french but live in the UK. But i really would like to live a year or two in New Zealand in the future. SOrry for the off topic.

If there are always some away fans at each game of the Nix, it is pretty remarkable. In my home country, the distance aren't pretty huge, however the number of away fans is sometimes ridiculous.

There are sometimes up to 20 or 30 away Nix fans who fly across to Australia for games, especially for the big games and the Melbourne game on Melbourne Cup weekend - when a lot of kiwis go over for the race on the Tuesday and come to the Nix game on the Sunday.

Most of the Nix's away games however the croud is largely expats living there, and maybe 2 - 6 traveling fans.

Managed to get to a few away games. Biggest Nix contingent I've experienced was at GCU a few years ago. Game was during Christmas holidays so coincided with quite a few Wellingtonians being in the Gold Coast on holiday. Would have been a couple of hundred away supporters which would have been close to out numbering the GCU supporters. Best of all we won.

To put that all in perspective, I'd say we get somewhere between 2 - 25 away supporters come to Wellington to support their team.

A great advert for the Nix and New Zealand in general - The Ring of Dirt - NOT! I'm  sure the chicken wire experience will have them stacked up to come back here.

So, Melbourne Heart City have averaged home crouds of 6815 this year, and they only got 5867 to their last game. Puts our supposed issues with croud sizes into perspective a bit. And they've got a rectangular stadium and everything.

The score was very forgettable, was it the last game? Brockie wanted that goal so much, great strike, even greater conga!

Nearly all of them.  They loved it (and many regret having come back to Welly post game) and it's on the list of favourite away trips for most Sydney fans who have been here.  Expect good numbers in the next few weeks

I feel we've had some rotten luck with the timing of certain things in the last couple of seasons when it comes to building the crouds.

There was the ridiculous draw last season with the huge period without a game at the ring of fire. Then we finally started building momentum and got a half-decent croud only to have pretty much everything fall the heart's way in that crazy 5-0 loss. That just took the stuffing out of us and any hopes of building numbers.

Then this season we had the asian cup break and then a couple of badly timed poor results to nip the excitement in the bud a wee bit. And now we've managed to regain the momentum, our home game where we should reap the rewards will be at the same time as the cricket world cup final.

You know it's actually a credit to Phoenix fans that we've managed to maintain the the croud sizes we have over the last few years.

That is a more than fair assessment. If NZ don't  make the final, will our croud turn up?

While we're talking about away fans, I'm not an expat, but I follow the Nix and try to attend all the Nix-United games.
I'd love to attend a Victory-Nix game at AAMI Park though... That would be sweet!

Not sure I'd call it luck, looking through the past few seasons, our games regularly get scheduled the same time as other major Sports events in Australia.

3 years running we have played on Bathurst Sunday, we are regularly scheduled at the same time as a V8 race (even in the same city), that's the one I know remembering now, but there have been other things as well. I understand there are always sports events going on in Australia, but when the same team is scheduled against major events repeatedly it is not a coincidence, or luck for that matter.

I work with a guy who loves sport, especially football and cricket. I'm almost ashamed that he is a fellow Arsenal supporter. Every Monday we have a good catch up on the weekends sports results and talking points.
He told me on Friday that he got offered a ticket to go to the CWC quarter final against West Indies but turned it down because he would rather watch it in the comfort of his lounge. I told him that you can't beat the experience of being there live. ( he must think I'm really weird driving from Palmy to every Nix game)
The point is that here is a person who is into sport but never goes to a live event. If that's the attitude of a sports lover, you can see the problem we have with trying to get the casual punter along.

It's luck from the perspective of someone who has no influence over match scheduling i.e. us

Excellent informative article this week on croud numbers and TV viewing figures in the A-League relative to the Phoenix's stats:

http://footballcentral.com.au/phoenix-sparking-deb...

"The Phoenix have long been accused of having small crouds, although this is largely based on anecdotal evidence rather than fact. The Phoenix have averaged crouds of 8,397 in their time in the A-League, which is on par with three other clubs in the A-League in Central Coast, Perth, and Melbourne City. When you think that the attendances of Central Coast in particular are boosted by the large numbers of away supporters travelling less than two hours from other places in New South Wales to attend matches, the Phoenix figure looks even healthier.

It looks healthier yet again when you pay attention to the fact that the Phoenix figures have consistently remained in the 7,500-9,000 range across the eight years they’ve been in the league for, a period of time where Wellington’s rugby crouds have dropped away significantly (see graph below). Perth has a population of just under two million people, yet their average crouds of 9,328 over the last four seasons haven’t resulted in calls for them to be kicked out of the league, despite averaging just 1000 people more than Wellington which has a population of 393,000."

Why dont they put the Cricket on the big screen (apart from during the actual game) and open the stadium for the whole match.  Win for the stadium, win for the Nix, win for the fans

Shane Harmon has said they are looking into ways of keeping the croud informed of the scores and are considering keeping the mezzanine bar open until the innings break for people to pop up to watch it.
