Can you convert it to attendance per capita? Reckon Wellington would be right up there.
Wellington 400 K average 7, 576 .... 1.9%
Newcastle 576 K average 12, 499 .... 2.1%
Mariners 295 K average 9, 916 ... 3.3%
I like that you chose the 2 lowest populations to compare us to.
Roughly on par with Newcastle is a decent effort. Mariners winning a lot presumably helps theirs. Does that include finals?
Unfortunately costs aren't diluted per capita accordingly... another interesting comparison would be v stadium capacity (though obviously not flattering for us).

Good effort from the supporters in Newcastle, considering the torrid times they've had in recent history with the club not really achieving too much, if anything. Forever hopeful of another title I suppose? Good on them.
Worth noting that Newcastle have the cheapest season tickets and single tickets in the league. Take note Welnix.

I must admit some of those are impressive, particularily Newcastle and CCM. It would be good if the Phoenix could nudge a 9,000+ average. It must a achievable. It would certainly look better on TV in such a big stadium as Westpac. I just wish the ASBP was averaging 10% of the Phoenix average across all the franchises. Auckland is probably the closest.
Without wanting to direct the discussion back to ASBP yet again. But i do think more could be done at nix games to promote TW games. This would of course be easier if the ASBP draw were done so TW were playing at home on a different day or even weekend to the nix. Just announce on the big screen or over the PA after the game something like "the nix are away next weekend but get your football fix by heading down to DF on Saturday to watch TW play..."

David Dome: Drawing crowds back to sport
Sunday, January 26, 2014
Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome talks to Tony Veitch about the issue of drawing crowds back to NZ sport, from a football perspective.
Worth noting that Newcastle have the cheapest season tickets and single tickets in the league. Take note Welnix.
Just remembered - don't they have a joint season ticket deal with the Knights? May also be why they're getting good numbers.
Would it be worth Welnix considering a similar approach with Nix/Hurricanes, especially seeing as they own shares in both clubs? I wonder if they've looked into the possibility of this - don't know if its been mentioned anywhere yet or not.

They did that at the last game. Also gave the Black Caps a shout out too for Fridays fixture.
Maybe some pressure needs to be put on the Wellington council and/or stadium to reduce costs. The alternative to them not doing that is the team playing home games out of town more [on more favourable terms] and if necessary moving full time to another city. This happens a lot in American sport, the team owners [businesses that wish to make money] go where they get the best deal. If they can do better elsewhere, they will look to move. They don't always move but do use the threat to get more favourable deals in their current location. I know it might sound harsh to the 4,000 odd Wellignton domiciled fans that turn up every game [I'm estimating the others come from out of town] but the owners need to make money and the right location is part of that. What might be a limiting factor is that there are not many alternatives to move to.
No Nix financial model will ever work in this market if we are 9th, coming on top of off field disasters and a last placing in the previous season. Good news is, we won't be 9th soon. Just 6 points away from 4th. Showing enough progress to suggest we could be a real worry to others in the Finals. Never heard so many floaters being so positive, and actually talking about the Nix since the 'big' playoff year. They will turnup when we hit top 4 - watch. That's how it works. Then you take advantage of the momentum with pre-season tix to get the base going again.

I think next season will be a ripper for us if we can keep the improvements going.
I understand over 10,000 tickets already sold for Eden Park. This means, given reasonable weather, the crowd could exceed 15,000. I hope Gareth Morgan doesn't feel this would be normal and further nudge his notion of investing in an Auckland A League franchise. I think Auckland has been fortunate in benefitting from a good run of form by the Phoenix at the right time.

Bring it on!
I can so see Gareth going for this Auckland A-League franchise. He seems to have a new project every month...
Gareth (or anybody) won't be considering a second NA franchise until the future of the current one is much more assured (from a competition perspective).

The there is still enough time for the new NZF board to work on the application to join AFC before then.

OK one off effect etc .... but what if Auckland draws 15K + ... and next Nix's games at the ROF draws say 8K ... what is the message both sent and received by the owners...
Nothing.
Nothing.
QFT
Nothing ... OK will accept and respect your local knowledge..

And play one game in Auckland a year.
Seeing as the biggest crowds for either Auckland side were in Wellington will they have to play here once a season to get a credible crowd?
I'm hoping for a good crowd tomorrow, good weather, people are generally happy about sports with the black caps, Nix in a run of form and with a few good headlines recently.
BUT, as a local I think it's a one-off. No way would you get this if the nix were playing fortnightly in Aucks and especially if they were based at the dire North Harbour stadium (many aucklanders would be hard pressed to say where it is, and consider the north shore to be "somewhere up there", or "the place you drive past when you're going to the beach").
Waah Waaah... It's too far... have you ever tried driving in this city?... I'm not getting stuck in traffic... It would take me an hour to get there... I'd rather watch the Premier league...
North Harbour is a great football stadium though (wish it was here).

It's going to be even better soon, once the old Carisbrook stand is in place on the eastern grass bank for the Under-20 World Cup.

I remember waiting at Sky City for the free bus to Nth Harbour and a Knights game - the bus that never came! Sort of sums things up really, as far as that team went. 1 - 4 - 17 their on field record first year. Who would want to watch that?
I did. Bitch of a drive.
So did I. Catching the (pay) bus. At least it meant you could drown yr sorrows before the match and at half-time.
Albeit a bit of a pain in the arse to get to, even whilst living on the shore when the Kingz were around, NHS is very good for watching sport. The '99 U17s world cup was a particular highlight.
Yeah I agree it means nothing either. It's a one off game. That's all. On the balance of one offs and population, it should be a big crowd.
As a side note, if Led Zeppelin were playing every other night at the local bar, numbers would probably dwindle off after people had seen them a couple of times. (If you take my example for what I mean)
