A few months ago I talked a couple of mates of mine into coming to a game (I think it was the Sydney game). I asked them if they wanted me to use my season ticket to get them a discount on tickets and they said nope, they knew someone who worked at the Doom Post and they could get free tickets through them. They came to the game, had a good time, but haven't been back because they've shifted up to Kapiti somewhere and don't want to come in. Anyway the point is it's silly that they could just get free tickets to come whenever they wanted but hadn't been to a game before that, and that they weren't even employed by the company that had the free tickets. Even if they were coming back regularly as a result of that one free match they told me they would be able to get free tickets to every home game the same way anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference to Welnix anyway. Which makes me wonder what percentage of the difference between crowds of say 6500 and 7500 are just more people using free tickets, so the bigger crowd doesn't actually equal more cash for the club.

Maybe instead of straight up free tickets lot of these comps should be 2 for 1 vouchers or something. At least that way there is an expectation that some sort of payment should be made in order to attend the game. Because otherwise people just think they shouldn't have to pay anything when there's so many unused free tickets floating around.

Not to mention how it makes you feel as a ST holder, knowing that you could probably get a Freebie to most games if you could be arsed!

As a season ticket holder you should totally have the moral high ground. :P

I could easily be getting my boss's 2 Deloitte tickets every game (he never goes) but I'm far happier supporting my local team by purchasing a couple of season tickets and being amongst it.

And that is why I buy 4 season tickets every year. Am I happy doing it? Of course I am. The point is, the club is devaluing my contribution and yours too, by making so many freebies available.  Simply dishing out Freebies en masse is not a sustainable way to boost crowd numbers. It would seem that in NZ, winning is the only way to do that.

In North Korea you'd have to turn up or risk being shot. Way to go.

I think the RBB has that policy too, and if you do turn up and watch the game for 30 seconds forgetting to sing you will also be shot.
Seems to work.

Banjo's don't help pay the bills. ZM do and have paid good money to be a sponsor. Pretty stupid to say that you want ZM gone because you don't like the music.

For some reason, I find that one of the funniest things I've read on here in ages! Top work.  ( Agree with the sentiment though)

Quite true but then neither do empty seats pay the bills.

Correct, but i 100% guarentee having ZM at the ground will not influence crowd figures.

Are these "freebies" actually free? I've seen Dom Post, Deloittes mentioned here in last few pages, and my first game this season was free, through my father's work. He goes to about 1/3 of the games this way, but the tickets are to the company's corporate box - aren't they already paid for? (I'm pretty sure Deloittes & DP have/had boxes too)

Whether the $$ from those tickets benefit the Phoenix directly, indirectly, or not at all is another question.

Sort of. The nix usually get some benefit out of them, in the case of the dom post it is free advertising I would imagine.

However with free tickets so easy to come by, you devalue your own product if the people who actually end up using the tickets don't have to pay for them. For every one who does use the ticket, there will be another who won't have got their hands on one this time who wouldn't be willing to pay $28 because they've become used to paying nothing - so they just won't go.

If you ask the business you're giving the tickets to, to sell them as part of a package (e.g "movie ticket and a phoenix ticket for $30" or "Big Mac Combo and a phoenix ticket - $25") then at least those tickets are going to people who have then actively paid for them. So you get the sponsorship without devaluing the product, the business probably makes a little bit for every ticket they sell, and they may even come back to buy more if the package deal is more popular than their free ticket allocation.

Well the Doom Post ones I was referring to weren't corporate box tickets, they were allocated seats down with the rest of us plebs. Don't know about how free they are - as mentioned earlier they are given by the club in exchange for say, advertising space. However, I think one of the big issues is that they are free to the people actually using them, so those people then start to feel entitled to free entry, or only go if they can get a free ticket, which doesn't help the club build a support base. Basically an over-supply of freebies makes full price tickets seem too expensive to a lot of people.

To the casual sports fan, RRB are 'better' than YF in what they do. Yeah its choreographed and all that, we know it is because we're football fans, but the casuals dont know, or care. Im probably going to get shot myself for this but has the thought of songsheets and stuff ever crossed the mind? Or am i wrong for thinking the view from the outside is more important than that of within?

That's probably true, but

The RBB are more interested in themselves than they are in the Club they support (or that's how it appears)

There's more of the RBB than us

They have people who 'buy in' to the whole singing at games thing

They have people who are probably more interested in singing and having some bald guy with a megaphone tell them what to do than watching the game. .

I suspect a large proportion of the RBB are more steeped in football culture than some of our 'target audience' are.

Although it already happens, to a certain extent, I'd be unhappy if YF got to the RBB stage, where they start looking down on, and heaping scorn and criticism on, supporters who pay their money but choose to support the team in a different way from "real" supporters.

Not knocking the idea, as such, though. If song sheets and megaphones work for us, go for it.

This raises the question, with all the free tickets out there, why don't the club just make it $5-$10 G/A and stop the freebies? Cheap tickets get people through the door no?
