I think young Reece has done a great job over the past couple of weeks.  Guys you have to remember he is young and doesnt get much game time.  Sure he has made a couple of mistakes and can seem unorthodox but a big ups to the big man.  Some of us may remember how unorthodox Bruce Grobbelaar was, but he was a world class GK and Reece can be fantastic for us in the future.
Well done the whole team today,  fantastic win against the Jets,  another 3 points against Glory over the weekend would be great.

He's probably the most nervous and awkward looking keeper I have ever seen, next to Paston. I thought that after a couple of nervous moments at the start he had a good game, though. Should get better and better. I think he has to learn to use his size better when collecting crosses/corners etc though.

I'd have to say that we kept a clean sheet in spite of him not because of him

Did make a couple of good saves, though, to be fair.

He'll get better with game time. It's like that for all keepers (see Paston now vs start of the season and last year). I'm pretty excited about how good Reece could get, actually.

Unfortunately the job of a reserve keeper is a pretty thankless one, he has to be able to come straight into the starting lineup and do the job.  CL the point is that he won't get game time to improve

He'll get chances, though obviously, it is pretty much starting at square one if you haven't played in a while. I could always hire someone to slow down Paston's recovery.

I know it's pro football and excuses for poor play can't really be accepted even from a young inexperienced keeper but I was kind of surprised to see Sigmund and Ifill give Crowther such a loud angry and extended bollocking in the 1st half.

I guess they know him pretty well: he's perhaps the kind of guy who needs to be yelled at to get his head straight, so I'm not saying he was the victim of workplace bullying or anything, but I wonder if the carrot rather than the stick might not be better for a guy so young.

True. And he's a big hard headed Aussie so he can take some stick.

I thought he played really well, two dodgy takes/punches off his line but he made some fantastic saves at the end of the first half. Not to mention his kick which is massive and opens up space over halfway for cosat/greenie/ifill to reak havoc.

Solid outing and a more than adequate back-up for paston.

i am honestly happy with him. I also agree that he doesn't seem to feel over-confident but surely he will improve with time. The problem with professional football is that you have a bunch of players who hardly step onto the field at all and, when called upon, they're expected to perform just like those they are replacing. and it's very hard.

I think he did OK. I have seen him at training several times and his confidence was much more high. It's just a matter of 'breaking the ice' and then he will be OK. Although Paston will soon be back between the posts.

Looks a bit vulnerable when he has to punch the ball ,but pulled of a couple of good saves last night  ,and should be fine until Paston gets back!

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

I think he's got the raw material to be an excellent 'keeper, and would like to see him remain here long enough to gain citizenship. Big 'keepers have for ages been in short supplyin NZ. His unorthodox approach also singles him out as a character. I agree with the "learn to use his height better to deal with crosses" assessment though, but he's young and it'll come.

one thing that I noticed from Sundays game to Wednesdays game is that he stayed on his line more. I wonder if he was told he was pushing too far foward? May take him a while to adjust to this if he is used to playing more advanced. steelo2009-11-05 10:58:20

I think he must have been told he was getting too far forward against Sydney, and tried to stay back at the start of the Jets game, and Siggy gave him a bollocking for not coming forward to gather a ball that rolled into the box.

I think the guy just needs some game time. He had a rough time against the quick Sydney attack, and the saves he made against the Jets were decent.

He struggled to hold the ball in the wet, which is understandable. But otherwise he covered well once he got into the rythym of things.

I liked the commentary on the Sydney game when they were joking about him getting up to half way, because he was well outside the box.

But he's a big unit, he just needs some more work with Gould and I think he'll do well in the A-League.

Lol at people who think he's playing too high up the park.  That is the role of a modern goalkeeper.

I thought he was excellent last night.  So difficult to come in like that and perform flawlessly.  As you'd expect he made a couple of errors - fumbled one, kicked one straight out, stitched Sigmund up once and got bollocked for it.

He's a sh*t load better than Kennedy though.

And we probably have two of the best five keepers in the league, so let's not complain.

Also, @ whoever said we have a short supply of big keepers in New Zealand.  Two out of three of our All Whites keepers are around 6'4''.  Hardly midgits.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

There was one early moment where he made a mistake that had me near cardiac arrest, but apart from that he was more solid, and didn't make me worry.  One save was a very powerful strike but straight at him, and he blocked it well. One other save I believe he had to make a good dive,  and executed well.

I thought he looked much better than against Sydney but it's hard to compare live to the telly.  How did it look to someone who saw both on the TV?

He got a few appreciative chants from the zone too.

I heard Johnny Gould being asked about that on Radio Sport and he listed a number of things that made standing forward a good tactic but finished by saying that the GK had to make sure that he didn't get into the position where he could have one dropped over his head. JG seemed quite relaxed about it though.

I think crowther is fantastic.....(from the entertainment sense0

He's from that long line of eccentric goalkeepers. Grobellaar and that guy from south america with the blond afro????

Crowther has all the attributes to be fine goalie...he's young and learning. But in the mean time you can't say he's boring. I just love the look of the guy....those long long limbs and that sort of semi'-demented look in his eye....bit like an orang-u-tang on P

He will play lots of games for the Phoenix one day and will become a crowd favourite.

I might start up the Crowther fan club!!!!!!

To be honest, I think that Crowther has the potential to represent the Socceroos one day and actually could end up in the EPL.

With Gould's coaching, being young and very tall plus having a hard and a fairly eccentric attitude to his game. You would be very hard push to find a keeper with such fertile ground to start his professional career.

If we are able to get the reserve team up and going in the NZFC, he would be able to get more solid grounding with game time and I wouldn't be surprised if he takeover the number one spot over Paston in the next couple of years time or gets picked up by a quality club.

Its great to see a young keeper putting some pressure on Paston and in many ways, I hope his football career will turn for the good. It would be a good counterargument against some Aussies who say that we don't add anything to the A-league. Of course winning the A-league is the best argument but in the meanwhile our Aussie players are special to us.

I am very happy with the development of our Aussie players in general. I think that Durante, Lia, McKain, Crowther, Hearfield are all good A-league level players, with the slight chance to go onto greater things. Durante and Crowther certainty can go onto future national honours. With Lia might be able to pick an oversea contract. If McKain and Hearfield would getting some consistency to their playing roles in the team, they can also get reasonable oversea contracts.

Loving the innuendo.

But he did well and he gave us a wave.  I used to do exactly what he did back when I played keeper, went out almost to halfway.  One day that could come back to get him though.

Not aware he's been taking any shots on goal so far...

But saw him and his better half at the supermarket today, she's very easy on the eye...

Crowther has had linited exposure to the A Leaguer and he is only 21. A rough diamond with bags of potential and a future. I like his positioning, even when out of the box he is aware of where he is. Talks to the backline a lot too. brave. OK, he makes a few awkward saves but so has every keeper in history at some stage,

Let's get behind and support "Spider", he a Phoenix player and i hope his contract is extended.

I like the way he employs the 'safety first' mentalilty and continues to kick the ball out on the full from back passes.

That's what I look for in a keeper.
