just a thought
has anyone at either nzs or the phoenix looked into the
possibilty of have a nzfc match as a curtainraiser. a team
wellington vs manawatu local rivalry or team wellington vs anyone
else. just a thought but two games for the price of one always goes
down well with the punters

The A-League aren't fans of curtain raiser games.

true but the do allow it. clubs have had them in the past, it
doesnt have to happen all the time but once or twice a year they
would go for.

besides, the pitch takes a hammering as it is, cant see players
wanting the pitch even rougher than it is after a rugby game.

I'd rather be in the pub with due respect to the nzfc.

NZFC is for the weekends off... just needs more bars close to
Newtown.

Great idea! Now is a good time to throw things into the mix - you
never know - it might push some buttons.
I'll bet there are some 'management issues' that would crop up if that idea was raised, but its worth passing it on.

A-League are dead set against it, both Sydney and Melbourne have
talked about hosting NSWPL or VPL games as curtain raisers,
and the A-League havbe blown it out of the water.
Anyway, how many folk are going to leave the pub earlier than 5 mins before ko. anyway! ;)

ccm vs knights away last year, curtain raiser before hand.
knights home game last year had the chatham cup final on
afterwards but the a-league had given permission for the chatham
cup to be played first.
sounds like the ffa have to sets of rules

Yup - all that makes sense. I'm sure that if there is big enough
case they'd go for it - but the Phoenix management probably don't
need any complications right now.

thats true need to get the basics right first up

I'd rather keep them separate. I plan to still go along to Team
Wellington matches, but it's different to the Phoenix. I reckon it
would dilute the TW experience as you wouldn't get all the Fever in
the ground in time for the TW match - leaving a small crowd in a
big stadium without the intimacy of Newton Park.
Anyway, the NZFC fixtures are out now and I think TW have no
home games on the same weekend as a home Phoenix fixture... unless
the Phoenix play the second leg of the SF at home and/or play the
1/2 Loser-3/4 Winner playoff at home.

if the draw has worked out that way then problem solved. But what
of they were same day same weekend with not enough time to see both
then who would you watch first up, that is what i was trying to
avoid if it was possible
Permalink

I think the NZFC will have taken it into account when setting the
schedule. They have moved games around before during the season -
in particular the Wellington-Auckland match that got moved several
times last season - so the possibility remains. I don't think they
would ever clash the games though. They must surely know that those
of us keen enough to go to TW matches will almost certainly be
Phoenix season ticket holders.

The draw has been carefully done for that reason. Why talk in
hypotheticals when people have gone to so much trouble to avoid it
?
It would be superb if the Phoenix dragged a few more to Newtown. Couple of thousand at TW would have Newtown rocking.

If Team Wellington did play before the Phoenix as a curtain-raiser
then that could shorten queus (?spelling) as there would already be
people inside the Ring of Fire before the big crowds showed up.

Other than allowing Ticketek some more breathing space, I'm not
sure how it would benefit the Phoenix. I can't see TW boosting the
attendances of a Phoenix match, but they would presumably have to
give up some of the gate money. The only other complication would
be the TW policy of allowing kids free entry, which is not going to
happen at the cake tin.
Do you think that TW will get larger attendances at Newtown as
a result of the Phoenix feeding the public enthusiasm for football?
I'm not so sure it will be significant, but it would be great to
have Hard News' vision realised.
