Deadly Rivalries

Who does everyone think the Phoenix will develop the fiercest rivalry with?

No local derby, so it will have to be for some other reason.

Any ideas?

It will be the team that annoys the fans in Wellington the most. The first side that plays the Phoenix and cons the ref, performs histronics or heaven forbid, throws the ball in underarm...
I do recall the Kningz being screwed somewhat by a certain Melbourne coach and his big-name signings that never showed up....Boutsianis and Kalagorakis.
Hahaha I even have Con Boutsianis full home Kingz kit as a permanent reminder of that episode.
I'm not sure what will happen. Possibly Sydney Fc as they are the easiest side to get to from Wellington?

The Perth Pansies - because Charlie Smith moved there - reason enough.

I was involved in the local organisation in Taranaki when we brought the Kingz to New Plymouth a few years back to play against Adelaide.

True to form the Kingz got torn to itty bitty pieces and lost 3-0, ever since then and following some of the after match commnets reguarding the playiung surface (it was too smooth and flat and had an even bounce lol.) I have hated the sight of Adelaide.

So for me I most desperately want to see Adelaide humiliated hence I vote for them as our grudge match team.

That was Adelaide City who are very different to Adelaide United and still play in Adelaide domestic football.

Goran Lozanovski pulled us apart...

I hate cocky. The cockiest team right now is definetly Melbourne. The Name Melbourne Victory just oozes cockyness. If we are gonna hate anyone, MV would be my first choice, if not them then Queensland Roar or Central Coast Mariners

Don't worry, its healthy to hate the best team in the comp

Season 1 - 7th

Hard to judge just yet Nembo. It really depends on which signings we make and how effectivly we use the 4 foreigner spots.

With my wifes family coming from Newcastle im already getting plenty of stick from Jets fans.So in this house the most important games for us to win will be those. If the unthinkable should happen and both the Phoenix and Warriors loose to Newcastle i will become selectively deaf very quickly.

GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

haha, nice comeback. When was the last time NZ got as high as 7th? Hopefully you sign some of our rejects, guys like Ferrante, Byrnes, Lia, Recchia, Vlahos and Diaco should improve your fortunes.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
you guys need to find someone to hate who will hate you back equally in return.

as rivalries  stands at the moment. (to my knowledge) feel free to correct me.

melbourne

hated rivals: we have our hands full with sydney and adelaide,
(as well as a few other friendly rivalries)

sydney. prob also have enough on their plate with
hated rival: melbourne
other: CCM
newcastle  (not sure of their relationship but they are a rival)

CCM.
hated rival: newcastle
 sydney (more friendly)

newcastle
hated rival: CCM
sydney (not sure where they stand)
(maybe a bit with queensland but i'm not 100% on that)

adelaide
hated: melbourne,
 other. maybe sydney, queensland? perth?

queensland
sydney? newcastle? melbourne? (really dont know with these guys, no hated rivals? should change when a gold coast or townsville team comes in

perth. adelaide?? (again not too sure)

wellington judgeing by this your best bet for a rival (someone who may pay some attention to you) is perth, but due to the distance it isnt exactly a local derby is it. maybe Queensland but they have have enough on their plate when more queensland teams come in.

We could just go for the 'everyones 2nd favourite' tag seeing as local rivals are unlikely.  We have enough people out there in all the fanbases that spout the 'there's no NZ in A-League' rubbish.

Me, I'll be hurling insults at every opposition side and players with the possible exception of any kiwi's visiting.

Amen. I'm looking forward to coming 'home' for an away game. I've never been to the cake-tin, so I'm curious to see what it's like.

If Perth blame us for Jeremy Christie they may see us as rivals...

mmm... Thompson... you make a strong argument despite your Sydney loyalty Eejit...  Thompson's goal celebration alone is the Gheyest thing in the A-League .

Everyone hates Sydney - there's no fun in having them as a rival.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Gentlemen I dare say that the team that hates you the most has yet to play.  There will be some sparks flying for sure when Wellington plays Tropical Football or whatever they end up being called up in Queensland in 08/09.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I've had some ideas
Central Coast Mariners, battle of the Yellow uniforms
Newcastle battle of the flying mascots (jets/phoenix)
Perth (distance derby)
Queensland (team who the Knights did best against)

I cannot come up with any reason for rivalry with Adeliade as they no longer have Kosmina to hate.

Sydeny (Melbourne, Adelaide, Central Coast, Newcastle, Queenland)
and Melbourne (Sydney, Adelaide everyone)
both seem to have enough rivalries already.

If Canberra gets a team you could have battle of the capitals.

"Bring on the South East derby - Melbourne v Wellington. "

Well said.

The Wellington City Council are promoting the Siste City line there too, so that makes sense (Akl = Sydney)

And given they're the champs we might as well aim high...

you cam hate us if you want, and yes i think wellington is in some ways like melbourne but smaller, but we really wont regard you as rivals, so it will be a very 1 sided rivalry. pick a dfferent team. perthdoesnt have anyone, you guys have had to play off for the wooden spoon last season.

I'm doing a pretty good job at trying to get all you Kiwis to hate Sydney FC and build up a bit of a rivalry aren't I!!!

(If you don't know what I'm talking about read some of my other posts, all jokes though, though I've only been to NZ once, and then only to the Sth Island, I love your country.)

Your signature has the incorrect spelling of Football Kingz....Kinz is some sort of Scottish word
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Hey yeah, thanks. Well, everyone knows what I meant anyway.

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
if canberra ever join, i guess you could have a 'capital city rivalry' along with the 2nd NZ team.

there's no reason to have a rivalry with us when you have no chance of winning what so ever. NZ teams are yet to take a point off us. Melbourne > Wellington in every way. Sorry if the truth hurts.

Get it right cobber. or should I say Sheila (politically correctness). The old Football Kingz gave South Melbourne a good old footballing lesson  winning 3-2 away from home, many years ago in the precurser to the A-League...the NSL (which was your highest level of football at the time.
It was a fantastic result considering everything went against the Kingz, with the plane breaking down (must have been Qantas) then having to take a second plane to Melbourne (Air New Zealand naturally), getting changed on the bus whilst on the way to the ground, Shane Rufers infamous "pull your machine guns out of your violin cases and shoot the opposition" speech on the bus, followed up by said footballing lesson. All recorded by the House Of Football in what is still one of the best pieces of football journalism this country has ever seen.
I'm afraid to say there are just too many Austalian fans with short memories. If you're gonna post this sort of stuff you've got to be prepared to take some flak.
It must pain you to be a Melbournian being that that is the city famed for the world cup result against Iran that saw you fail to qualify for the World Cup. The truth hurts bro.

relax mate! wheres that kiwi sense of humour gone.
i meant nz is yet to take a point off melbourne victory. i really hope wellington succeed for the good of the league. i was just having some fun mate.

any way. just take a breath, relax and go find your girlfirend or ewe, which ever you prefer!!!!

Hey the sense of humour is still there dude. Little Britain is funny but suggesting the the Phoenix have no chance of beating the Victory is just asking for egg on your face. Thats the sort of comment I'd expect from a 5 year old and I'm sure you are a little older than that. Watch out for Michael Jackson though, he likes em young! I'm sure my wife will appreciate being referred to as a sheep. Sheep jokes are lame, especially coming from Australians. You've got more sheep that us for starters. Manky looking things too. It's no wonder the Aussie Butcher has to get his meat from this side of the Tassie, as
you can barely get a good feed off one of yours. Just shows how lazy you are getting with your humour. You could at least put a bit of effort into it:-p
You can expect the mother of all postings should the Phoenix take a point of your thuper duper Victory. I'll celebrate a Phoenix win over Victory buy eating one of your national animals - the Kangaroo. In fact all Kiwis should buy a roo, eat it and lets see if we can make them extinct. Try eatin a Kiwi brother....you won't find them on the menu anywhere.
OK your turn now....

How about THREE points then? And I hope you are using plenty of olive oil whilst bagging your friend.Oh and since you are seem to be able to see into the future can you tell me if Dr Who and Rose actually get to shag?

You lot seem to becoming everyones 2nd favourite team, something that we have seemingly been labelled with by a lot of people in the first 2 seasons, so perhaps we can be rivals for that reason alone.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

all im trying to do mate, is develop a healthy rivalry. i cant wait to get over to wellington and see my team play against a proud kiwi side. thats what im looking forward to in V3...
