Can someone please tell him that it's not talk back.  It's like watching a football match with some yarrick or your girlfriend who doesn't really care what's going on and they just talk throughout the whole match.  Half the stuff he is rubbishing on about has only tangential relationship to the action on the pitch.  He needs to learn the value sometimes of just shutting up and letting the pictures tell the story, he just rabbits on and on and ends up saying absolutely nothing!

It is bloody painful!!  Cant stand him and he goes on to being negative about the Nix as soon as he possibly can

I agree he thinks he is still on the radio. Will be a long season if we have to listen to him

Don't understand all the hate. He's alright - most of the time I don't really listen to the commentary anyway for Nix games. I tune out and watch the game.

Oz commentators have forgotten more about football than he will ever know.

I've never had any problem with Dewhurst.  You lads sure you aren't thinking of de Jong?

watch a reply, concentrate on the commentary and see how often what Dewhurst is talking about has any relevance to wat is being shown on the screen

lifeless little twat just gets on my nerves. tries to sound poetic, talks to much about peripheral, unimportant things. Would help more if there was a proper analysis show that had frequent air time on sky, so that he doesn't have an excuse to open his mouth so much.

he played in the game YF played against the Melbourne fans before our first ever A League game (Kiwi Pie, your boys took one hell of a beating).  It was all pretty gentle and good natured, except for Dewhurst who ran around like a mad man, shooting from everywhere (usually miles off target so we had to wait 20 minutes while a hungover Aussie wandered 2.5 miles to get the ball).

I saw him the next day after the Melbourne game, when everyone was buzzing after the comeback, and he seemed depressed that we had got the point.  Just so negetive about the whole thing which made me wonder why he bothered.

Both are sh*t.

Three for me, and two for them.

To be objective about Dewhurst, I have yet to hear him comment positively on anything.
His radio shows tend to have a negative tone, his commentary on the game comes from a base of nothing, his throws to Fred for colour simulate stupidity and there was 1 match where he harped on about how he used to referee and he wouldn't have done that (when a player was obviously needed to be sent off just cleaning this other player up) and I remember I used to read his opinion in the back of the Waitakere United programmes and they were so negative.

He comments like he is one of those all knowing oracles and while I supposed commentators are meant to be all knowing, you are not meant to come across in that smarmy kind of way.

There is a video on the net that I can't find right now and its the same piece of football from the World Cup of a disallowed goal but shown twice with ESPN commentary and then  BBC commentary. The ESPN commentators are decrying why its been disallowed. The BBC guys are saying 'Well he is obviously 2 yards offside, simple'. I heard the ESPN one and instantly thought of Dewhurst.

Not only is he negative, his voice pisses me off! Bring in a Pom!

Plus whenever we score he'll repeat whatever he's said twice. It's so f**king annoying.

Is there a local alternative?

Don't understand the hate for Fred btw, top bloke.

I'd love to see local commentary for all the A-League teams & totally biased at it.

Yes, because poms are automatically good commentators who know a lot about football. Did you hear John Helm during the World Cup? Feckin horrible

Fred is a nice guy and he makes some good points.

But he has a terrible voice fo TV and as the "talent" he is supposed to add some colour to the show, and he seems to be sucked into the vortex of Dewhurts's non-interesting patter.

It really is life threatening...

I don't mind de Jong so much, possibly because he has a relatively minor role in the commentary, so there's less of him to hate. He does have that 'lanky man' kind of voice though, which if i heard too much of, i would probably get sick of.

Alan Stroud also did them they may have done them together, Alan is always good value for a quote or two.

Otago Utd games used to be on local TV. The guy that did the last game against Waitakere was excellent, especially given it was his first game.

I'll happily take any coverage I can get.

He is miles better than the English guy that does Asian football on the afc streaming site, who sounds like he is just emerging from a coma.

A case in point was the commentary of the Boca Juniors match.  Dewhurst went on and on about how the Boca players wouldn't be used to the cold conditions that night.  What toss!  The coldest I have ever been at a football match is tied between NZ v England at Athletic Park in July 1991, Phoenix v Newcastle Jets November 2009, and Boca Juniors v Argentinos Juniors in Buenos Aires in September 2005.  The last of these three I recall my teeth chattering.  Four days later I was watching Velez Sarfield play Cruzeiros in pouring rain and cold in Buenos Aires.  There's nothing wrong with mistaking Latin America as a sultry land of steamy tropical nights - but a professional football commentator ought to do better.

Better local commentators?  Seems easy - Piney and Chote.

from radio to tv isn't always easy, as the subject of this thread shows.  john mcbeth was pretty terrible when he went from radio to tv for the rugby.

I don't mind Dewhurst so much.  I must say for the All Whites games in the WC I preferred him.  The english guys doing the commentary on tv1 didn't bring the same emotion to events for me, particularly the two goals NZ scored.  having said that, sky probably could try out some others and see how it works out.
