Good news....

While things are going well on the field, the Brazilian is also planning
some changes off it, having applied to become a New Zealand resident.
Diego's Brazilian compatriot Daniel has already switched international
camps, becoming a fully-fledged Kiwi last year.

"I enjoy being here," Diego said. "I'm on a two-year contract, so why
not stay longer? Everyone in Wellington has been really welcoming, my
teammates are excellent and the club has been great to me. I have
nothing but good things to say about the city and the whole
organisation."

How old is he?  If we are hoping to get him in the All Whites then it's five years away.

Ah, thanks.  Good to have him as a citizen but unfortunately won't be able to represent the All Whites (as I understand it).

I've got it, get a Brazilian who's name starts with D and he'll stick around; Dida, Denilson, Dani Alves, and the Juve Diego should all be keen.

He will be 30 in early December.

Why can't he be an All White in 2015 if he keeps healthy and performs well? He hasn't played an A' international for any country yet, has he?

Interesting how he spent a few years in Oz then come here for a few months and says he wants residency. See, Wellington is great! Mind you, it was Adelaide

Pretty sure residency is required if you want to stay in the country

Sauce?  Not to be a prick, I just remembered there was a  lot of confusion over whether it was 2 or 5 years.  So Daniel can play for us now?

The rule was changed last year from 5 to 2 years.

Daniel came here before the rule change, so the 5 years applies to him. Diego came after the rule change, so 2 years applies to him.

Nope. He can be on a special work permit for sports players for up to 3 years I think it is, after which he can apply again and have it renewed. He does not need residency if he doesn't want it.

Residency is all I have and I've been here for 27 1/2 years. I also played for NZ at U17's and U23's. Perhaps I was ineligable

Its no longer a problem.

Residency and citizenship are definitely two different things. You cannot represent NZ at a senior level without citizenship - and that was also one of the things they said in the brochure I was given when I converted my residency to citizenship. Not sure about youth level Toffeeman, but I would have thought U23 at least would require citizenship, so I suspect you were ineligible!

My father-in-law has been here for over 50 years and still only has residency. I don't why he (or you for that matter!) don't bother getting citizenship. I did it to make life easier as soon as I'd been resident for three years (I believe that's five years now) for when I go to Aussie for work, as I had to keep getting a permit. The other reason was if you stay away for a few years your permanent residency can lapse - as has happened to an ex-colleague of mine, though that may have changed now too.

So, seven years all up before he can play for the AWs? Five years of residency to get citizenship plus FIFA's new two years of citizenship rule? Or does that residency year period count in FIFA's calculation? It could well do, given FIFA's rule was there to stop countries taking the piss by awarding citizenship without due process.

Either way, unless the NZ Immigration service change or bend their rules, it's a minimum of five years still isn't it?

You can get fast-tracked for citizenship if considered to be of special value for New Zealand.

If he goes through the regular channels, then yeah, it would take 7 years.

His performance today didn't do him any favours IMO.

He had an off day, I'll be happy for him to retain his spot based on last week's performance.
