Greetings and hope you dont mind me popping in your forum.

I support the Charleston Battery (yellow and black vertical stripes as well) here in South Carolina in the USA and we are gearing up for our 2011 season.

Being a lower division team we clamor for info in the offseason and yesterday at an open preseason match, there was a new face in the mix.  Diego Walsh.

after some google-fu I found his clubs and found this forum and thought I'd ask you about him and how he is on the field.

He didn't see much time yesterday but played on the left mid in a pretty standard 4-4-2 set up.

thanks for any help or opinions.

He made it onto the field!?!?!? holy hell!!

He was either injured or deemed not good enough here so didnt get much game time. when he did, it was often as a substitute.

Hope that helps and hopefully he can do a great job for you guys in your forthcoming season!

He arrived with much fanfare as the attacking midfielder Phoneix had lacked, but spectacularly failed to deliver and spent all of last season on the sidelines.  He only started 5 games the previous season. One of the top underachievers in the club's short history.

However, he's not without skill and hopefully he can turn things around and make an impact with your team.  Best wishes to him.

He had a good ACL with Adelaide, and one or two useful appearances from the bench for us- but his motivation on the park for us was lacking when he first arrived. I remember him being perhaps the earliest substitution for the Phoenix.Perhaps being back in the US with a new coach he can sort his head out.

We had another lemon for us leave us and go back to his hometown where he suddenly find his scoring boots, so who knows.martinb2011-03-24 08:10:09

I think work ethic was a problem in the eyes of our coach, that and the fact that he kept getting injuries when he otherwise probably would have been playing due to injuries/suspensions of other players.

Good luck to him in South Carolina though.

thanks for the replies.

To be honest, a midfielder is the position I feel we need the least.  And from your description, I dont think his attitude would last long in the locker room here. Plus injury prone is not a good thing in the USL Pro, it can be a brutal schedule with travel and fixture congestion not to mention the heat and humidity in the South come July and August.

One of our former players, Terry Phelan, relocated to NZ about 6 or 7 years ago and was the coach for Otago.  I wouldnt be surprised if he had something to do with his trial as it seems we have had a few back and forths with NZ over the last couple years.

We also signed Cole Peverley from Hawk's Bay and who has gotten a look your national team a few times.

Also Colin Favley came back to us from a season loan with Younghearts

As to our kit, they havent updated the website photos yet.  they haven't changed much for 2011 (our season starts Apr 9) but the sponsor logo dropped the white rectangle and is just the word and the crest now has three white stars above the Battery logo.

Cole Peverley is a good player. Nearly made the FIFA World Cup squad as injury cover, but an injured Tim Brown made the cut instead. Hopefully Cole can impress and land an MLS contract. He trialled at Seattle Sounders previous to joining your mob.

i heard through some mutual friends that diego has a heap of asian trials set up for the month of may... his partner - the striking one amongst the wags, who is now pregnant with their second - is from charleston, her family is quite wealthy and diego and family are staying in one of their homes during the time off which is why he is training with the battery to keep fit for these trials. she obviously probably has to quit modeling and acting due to the second pregnancy and my mutual friend with her told me that diego probably wouldn't consider signing second let alone third division in america (shes a bit high matinence it seems), but would rather depend on his degree if it came to that... so i don't think you have anything to worry about.

Training with the Battery makes sense.   Good way to stay in shape.
I was guessing his past salary must be higher than what most make here.  That said, if one were to sign with a lower division team, they could do far worse than the Battery,  they've moved on some good players and have a good set up.

We've had two players sign with Seattle recently and another one signed with the Columbus Crew. so MLS teams definately have Charleston and its players on the radar.

Walsh put pen to paper in Charleston.  Hope he does well for us but we are in need of strikers that can finish!

He could always sign for Waterside.

Three for me, and two for them.

Greenie starts in left midfield for the Wharf. Not sure he'd be displaced...

In all of this it should be noted that Diego is a smashing bloke.  I really wish him well.  He had a rough time here I think - with injury and then falling out of favour with Ricki - but he still did his bit.

Remember when the Nix sent him to Sydney to do the press conference for the finals series on behalf of the club even though he and everyone else knew he wouldn't be playing in the finals?  That was pretty brutal, but he took it in his stride.

Johnny Gould said to me once that Diego was a fantastic professional and had been a hugely positive influence in the ASB Challenge team.

So while he might not have lit up the A League like we had hoped, he's a good man and player and I wish him all the best.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Agreed. Saw him on the news at least twice as well at kids events. Didn't he and Daniel run their own Futsal programme for kids? Good luck Diego.

Diego got the start Saturday night and had a pretty good match.  The Battery loss 3-0 but it was much closer than the score line suggests.

The Battery play again tonight at 7:30 EST and expect Walsh to get the start as we have been hampered by injures.  (looks like NZ Cole Peverley may have broke his foot.)

Diego signed a contract to the end of the Battery season (End of Aug) but has been allowed to travel to Thailand for a trial there and missed a match on Tuesday and Friday (Not exactly sure when he is expected back)

Diego Walsh trialling at TOT (Telephone Organisation of Thailand) in the Thai Premier League. TOT currently sit in 15th place in the TPL, just 3 points above the relegation zone.
Here's a link:

It's in Thai, but I thought the photo was worth the lolz.

In keeping with the photo, the story doesn't mention that he's coming from Charleston (or was at the Nix), but merely says he was formerly a star with Adelaide Utd, a big team in the A-League. It also says he was part of the Cakes side that were A-League runners-up in 2008 & 2009, and top scorer for the club in their 2008 ACL campaign, when they also came second. Diego also played with Brazilian legend Romario at MLS outfit Miami FC.

TOT are trialling Diego after plans to sign Ghanain Laryi Kingston fell through after Kingston failed to get a visa for Thailand. Kingston has since received a better offer in the US.
