to be fair to Elrich, he did play a decent part in the build up to felipe's goal

(but, i imagine Aus could do better, at present - here's hoping he comes into realistic contention)

You would have more chance of winning lotto than Dodd playing for Aussie

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Don't tell us, tell Ben W, he selected him.

Although, I'd consider what other options are out there before writing it off.  The likes of Moore, Popovic , Muscat and Vidmar have retired from international football, Rudan is off overseas which leaves you with a big number of kids to choose from... where else do you find an experienced Centre back to partner the likes of Milligan ?

Ognenovski ? North ? Vargas ? (Either of the last two would make a small pairing with Milligan) The stocks aren't huge.  Lose one of those and Dodd must come in to contention if you want experience (and surely they would have him ahead of Laybutt).

How's my driving? - Whine here

I must say I am surprised the Ockers will rely on Australian based players for these matches. I realise its not entirely their choice, and that its also a case of whether European clubs will release their Aussies, but it seems somewhat risky in that group not to be doing everthing possible to pull together the best possible squad for these qualifiers. probably they will be ok, but someone is going to take a lot of heat if the kids dont do the job and suddenly Australia is having to win away in Iraq down the track to qualify.

Not only that, some matches do not land of FIFA designated match days, so they can't really pull players away from their european clubs. The core group of the squad will ave to be A-League based because of that and because the european based players will not ave the time to be part of training camps and such. Look at the Asian Cup, they pulled all the European based players and they couldn't cope with the conditions. It was the A-league players that stood out.

New coach Pim Verbeek says the first match against Qatar will be largely A-League, and to that end he'll be watching as much A League as he can over the next 6 weeks. So I guess Dodd may get noticed if he plays very well, but frankly it's unlikely he'll be playing for Oz any time soon, considering there are so many other candidates.

There is some suggestion (from SBS TV's Craig Foster) that Moore may still turn out for them. They certainly need him. Torpor-Stanley is an Olyroo, but I'm not impressed with him - does dumb stuff, of which that penalty last week was a prime example.

I can't wait for Reinaldo to get called up.

As long as they get Carle, Sterjovski (who are both likely to be avaliable), Carney back they should be fine with A-League players.

Dodd is a good player. Bit too much of a temper at times but to stand out in our rabble of a defence is a feat in itself.

If an NZ based footballer plays for an Australian team, it raises the IQ of both squads

Fingers crossed for him, would love to see a Phoenician on the Socceroos roster.

Aren't they all dead?
And wouldn't Lebanon and Syria be more likely international allegiances for them?

This raises an interesting point. What do you call a Phoenix player?

Who are the standout aussies from the A-League this year? I think they wil struggle and I agree Marius, after making the WC I would have thought that they would have been pulling out all the stops to qualify again.

Good spotting Phoenician is also the term used to describe someone from Phoenix, Arizona. "A Phoenix" doesn't sound right, so I just appropriated Phoenician.
