Good stadium, great turnout.

HOWEVER...Phoenix were very poor and I fear a long hard season if we don't sign at least 2-3 quality players. Ritgers could be one of those.

Sanchez probably hasn't done enough and Mehmet didn't do himself any favours last night, however in his defence Ricki never did him any favours by sticking him up front oh his own.

The midfield, Brown in particular, were posted missing for most of the game and what can you say about the defence? Torn apart very easily and caught out umpteen times trying to play the offside trap. Both full backs and Siggy were really struggling IMO.

Daniel also came on to let us all know he doesn't know what offside is either.

Overall, we've a lot to work on in the next 7 weeks or so.

Brown went missing? I don't believe you.

Yeh I know it's a regular occurrence. I genuinely had to double check with my mate that Brown had even played the first half as I'm not sure he even touched the ball!

I posted a link a page or two back. It's a fan video and limited but gives you a taste.

I will be contacting the filming station tomorrow about when it will screen and how to get DVDs. I'm happy to help others.

Now that's optimism! Somehow I can't see the multitudes beating a path to your door for a DVD of a 5-1 pre-season defeat.

No offence intended, ahmad! The idea just amused me. The club should really start paying you for all the marketing you do.

All good! You are right though. I've got my own reasons for wanting to see the footage. I missed of the game due to responsibilities at the ground. Probably a good thing really.

Ahmad don't sell your self short. Breakeven would have been maximum 7.0k.. Therefore you guys have made the Phoenix at least $120,000. You probably paid for our newfun striker. Well done

Can I claim him then? I will do just that (if he turns out to be good - first impressions? Hell yeah!)

Great work from Ahmad, and any other helpers. Just over 10,000 pre-sales, and another 5000 on the day is brilliant for Dunedin.

While plenty to be dismayed about in terms of performance, there were a heap of positives from the occasion. While  a few have noted it was pretty quiet- listening in to people leaving the stadium, there were lots of positive comments about the fever zone/ west stand, and how that really made for a good night. Weird acoustics meant we could not always hear the words of the  chants- even from the western corner of the north stand. Maybe some chant sheets could help in future (or is that just lame??)

Generally- I HATE mexican waves, but thought they were a laugh last night. The effort put in by the group just outside the fever crowd was great- and well managed by fever zone people- took ages to move it on, coz there was football to watch! Oddly, I think when it started and went round the stadium it actually gave the phoenix players a bit of a lift.

Lots to work on for us on the field. Defence looked very very shakey. I think Paston had more passes to him than than any other Phoenix player, and generally coped well (aside from being sat on his arse late in the first half- but noticed that from a few of the players on that part of the pitch.- I did hear the Phoenix requested the pitch to be watered just prior to kickoff). Paston also made a great double save in 2nd half, and also collected the ball nicely off the head of a roar player on a corner in the first. I thought he did pretty well with essentially a non-communicative defence in front of him.

The whole place went off when the phoenix scored (just in front of us). While the final score did not help, I think most of the 15000 really enjoyed the occasion.

Good to see Phoenix players come round to acknowledge the crowd- pretty hard to do when you have mostly played sh*te-  and also thought it was pretty classy of the Roar players to do the same- especially when the last port of call for them was the Fever Zone!

i thought there was still a great buzz as we left the stadium- hope to see it again real soon.

Just back from Dunedin. Great work done by the Dunners crew. Stadium needs work Speakers for temporary stands needs work. Floor stamping was a major distraction as the volume killed Fever chants. The origin of Mexicain wave I thought was started from bordoom.  Exits are to small if stand gets to full capacity.  Traffic flow needs work. Won't mention the game.

yep. I agree.

Gotta work with what you have got . . . new crowd (which dunedin was); acoustics; and realisation that chants from established fan base is only part of it. Yellow Fever have redefined NZ sporting support- first time in other cities/ towns needs to have a bit of leeway- it is all new to large portions of the nz footballing public outside of Wellington and even the good old block from auck!

Overall was a  great response- 15k from a small city, all of whom enjoyed the night (and lead up)- great situation for Phoenix and NZ fotball.

Worked in Chch. I think his main point was that the stadium took away some of the atmosphere.

So is Dunners still keen to host the FFA "regional" game on 14 December?

Lets hope so, they will learn a lot from Rugby world cup to sort minor problems.

I think that a fit Tim brown, Leo Bertos etc etc when fit can play a part in the resurgence of the nix but unfortunately time isnt on our side and if they are struggling to still get fit then replacements will have to be found...and favouritism may have to go out of the window

Thanks for embarrassing yourself and walking down George Street with a Yellow Army flag strapped to you and asking everyone in the street "do you know about the Phoenix game on this afternoon at the new stadium? 5:30 - see you there!".

By the way walking down George Street with you and carrying those flags was one of my many highlights for the weekend.ahmad2011-08-23 20:10:48

Well I, for one, had a thoroughly good time. From the gross oversupply of sausages on the bbq to the gross overindulgence of beers from the bar everything was pretty bloody good I thought.

I invented a game for myself in the longroom: try to match up faces to yf forum usernames. I got smithy and ahmad. That was about it. Fail.

Official attendance just through for the first ITM Rugby game at Forsyth Barr Stadium. Big local derby game tonight - Otago vs. Canterbury.

Attendance: 14,067

That's right Dunedin. Your Phoenix pre-season friendly attendance topped the oval ball game by 970 - congrats on a wonderful achievement!ahmad2011-08-27 19:43:47

Thats great.  I guess the Rugby union will be pretty happy with getting that many along though, seems a good figure for an ITM cup game

That's a good point. Will be interesting to see what the crowd figures will be like after this game and whether they will slowly diminish to the pathetic crowds Carisbrook was drawing towards the end of her life.ahmad2011-08-27 20:00:46

Interesting how it is reported in various print media- the NZ Herald say (for the game tonight) there were 15000; the ODT give the 14067 figure, and even say "The crowd was marginally lower than the the 15,037 the Wellington Phoenix drew for their pre-season match last Saturday."

Was great to have such a good crowd last week . . .

Interesting how I used to believe that the NZ Herald was like some kind of gold standard when it comes to newspapers in New Zealand...

via Official Forsyth Barr Stadium Twitter

And they posted on their Facebook: "Official attendance over 14,000- awesome work :)"

More recently I've discovered that the NZ Herald is pretty sh*t!ahmad2011-08-27 21:28:43
