probably more than just a rumour, as the aussie papers are saying we have spoken to him, (presumably nothing signed - not least because Ricki and Tony are overseas)

but would you sign him?

25 yo, rb/cb, just under 6 foot, 36 a-league appearances for the jets, called up to Ausie squad for Qatar game by Pimroo Verbeek

Club management claims it has made its final offer to him and will not budge, which means Durante is likely to accept an offer to join Wellington Phoenix next season.

"It's disappointing, but that's what happens in football," he said. "I'd love to stay with the Jets and I'm still hoping very much that something can be done. My family is settled here and we love it."

Having just read the above (taken from the press story posted on the YF site) its hard to imagine he really wants to play for the Nix. Are we already being seen as a last resort option by the Ozzie players, as were the Knights? Going by what he has said above his heart wouldn't be in it, so no I wouldn't sign him.

I don't think there's any suggestion of the Nix being seen as a last resort option. If he's been happy at Newcastle and his family/kids are settled there, I think it's only natural for him to say what he's said.

I wonder if anybody had asked Ross Aloisi how he felt about leaving Adelaide before they dumped him. I suspect he'd have been saying the same sort of thing. Don't think anyone could accuse Ross of not giving 100% for the Nix.

I also recall that Leo Bertos was quoted as saying very similar things about Perth before we signed him. I think Durante would be a great signing for us.

p.s. There's also the small point that he does have at least one more, fairly important, game to play for them. Telling the press that he can't wait to bugger off to Wellington wouldn't be the smartest of moves just at the moment

We don't know what Ross would have said do we so  I can only go on what Durante has said. Ross and Leo don't have families to shift over here either so very much easier for them. If Durante's family is so well settled in newcastle then he will find it difficult settling them in Wgtn, that seems obvious. Or he leves them behind. Can a guy give his 100% in either of these circumstances?

lot's of footballers  leave their families who are settled in an area to go play football in other countries ,cities, states etc it's no different to daniel  leaving his wife in brazil (i know she was pregnant)or ricki herbert leaving his family in auckland and living in wgtn

i say sign him up he'll be a pretty good signing indeed

I think that explains his media statements fairly well

he is almost certainly still trying to score a better contract from the Jets, but if he doesn't if guess his wife would rather come to Welly than go to Finland -for example-  (but hey who knows)

I haven't watched him closely, so was wondering how the wise old owls and the young whizzkids on here rated him - an aussie call up is promising and i guess because he's not big for a centreback he must possess good technique, pace and positional awareness

let's hope so

Wow. We could do with half a dozen like that. Has he got a brother?

But... if he's really good, why aren't more clubs chasing him? Thoughts?

I must admit I haven't seen him play that much but he did look OK at centreback from what i remember. According to the Newcastle squad list though he is down as a right back, which as we all know is where the Nix had a gaping hole all season. If he's good enough to get called up to the AU squad then I hope he does sign for us and become the starting right back until he retires, I just think there is a risk of him not working out for reasons other than football. And as far as press statements go, no one forced him to say all those nice things about Newcastle, why not just keep quiet? I don't want to be negative anymore though, so I'll mellow and say take the chance and sign him because he has proven ability in a position the Nix vitallly need to fill.

The Phoenix would have to be the opposite of a last resort, more like an ideal option, for him to leave or uproot his family.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

IMO he is a very solid back and as hard as nails most teams would want him.

He has been linked to other clubs, but the nature of the salary cap is that others may well not be able to afford him, or justify having another Centre Back on the books.  Add to that the fact that we have 4 of his ex-team mates on board, all who will have been in his ear telling this is the best place for him.

After his showing in last night's game against Queensland, he looks a better prospect than ever.

Will watch him with interest in the final. If he can get throught that - without breaking a leg or suffering some other nasty injury - he looks like a plus signing for the Nix.

If we can get him.

He looked a top class defender. He never got too far away from Reinaldo and showed what our guys lacked, the ability to concentrate for the whole game. Good on him, it might make Newcastle rethink their offer unfortunately for us. I hope we can come up with the right deal for him and his family.

Come on Frankie, that's just nasty.  We all know he was trying to say "wheel".

There's always the old school unabbreviated version of "we will"....

But I prefer DLB's "wheel"......

"Wheel be coming, Wheel be coming....Wheel be coming down the road" (kind of makes sense now...)

according to the Sydney Morning Herald, Durante has signed a" letter of intent" regarding signing for the Phoenix

Here's the link:

Here's the text:

The Jets, meanwhile, are not only focusing on the grand final - the club was yesterday trying to sort out a new deal for key midfielder Stuart Musialik, as well as complete the signing of Sydney FC utility Ruben Zadkovich. Heading in the other direction is striker Mark Bridge, who has signed a letter of intent to join Sydney FC, and defender Andrew Durante, who has done likewise with Wellington Phoenix.

Utility Adam D'Apuzzo is also mulling over a sizeable offer from Adelaide United, while midfield anchorman Noel Spencer is almost certain to join Gold Coast Galaxy. The Jets have missed out on one recruiting target, defender Eddie Bosnar opting to join Japanese side JEF United Chiba instead.

I thought Ricki and Tony P were in Europe/South America at the moment, I didn't think anything much would happen till they got back. I wonder who's looking after the Durante business at the moment then, unless he signed this letter a while back and news of it is just being released.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Fine !  I'll do it then.

What happened to 'I'm Hull until I die' ?  The other Hull fans I know all have 'second' teams.  You're all weirdo's.

If the Durante thing is true, it's probably being kept quiet until after the final so there are no disruptions.

I think the fans should be in charge of the Durante contract process in the abscence of RH and TP. A bit like a trial of the Ebbsfleet system....Tigers should we sign him up? This could be a chance to include a set of supporter clauses

- Must watch the game from the backbencher with YF if injured
- Must give the rising phoenix hand sign to the YF crew on scoring a goal
- Must give the bollock basher a big 'who are ya' and a don't argue rib cracker

before embarking on such a mission i think we should wait until monday morning, by then we'll have proved that YF can indeed organise a piss up in a brewery and anyone who made it home sober can start to look for a pen and start negotiations

Interesting piece at the end of the Sydney Morning Herald story on van Egmond re the comings and goings of Jets players.

... defender Andrew Durante,  has [signed a letter of intent to join] Wellington Phoenix.

So, looks like he really is coming our way.  A good addition.
