Former Socceroo and A-League star Ahmad Elrich to face 11 gun charges
FORMER Socceroo, Fulham and A-League star Ahmad Elrich has been charged with 11 gun offences and one drug offence after police stopped him on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle at Granville.
The 29-year-old Merrylands local, who played for the Parramatta Eagles and Parramatta Power, was pulled over by police at Blaxcell St about 7.50pm last Thursday.
According to police he was stopped on his motorcycle due to a faulty rear tail light, and subsequently searched after officers noticed some reusable plastic bags in his wallet when asked to produce his licence.
Police have alleged that two pistols and ammunition were found, as well as a quantity of the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis, for which Elrich did not have a prescription.
Both of the pistols were allegedly loaded.
Police allege six 6.35mm Browning rounds, two .38-calibre rounds and one .357 magnum round were also found.
Elrich faced Parramatta Local Court last Friday with his father in attendance and was refused bail.
According to court documents, Elrich was refused bail because he had allegedly committed a serious offence and there was a concern he would not appear again in court if bail was granted.
Among the reasons raised by his defence as to why he should receive bail, the court was told Elrich was an Olyroo who had played soccer in Europe until 2007, was not a flight risk and had a property portfolio.
The case was adjourned and Elrich remanded in custody until June 17 where he will appear via video link.
Elrich played professionally in England, Korea and Norway, represented the Olyroos at the 2004 Olympics and won 17 caps for the Socceroos.
Most recently he played for the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, but was released last year and has since been without a club.
Soccer runs deep in the Elrich family, with brother Tarek currently plying his trade in the A-League for the Newcastle United Jets, and cousin Kutaiba playing for the Parramatta Eagles in the NSW Premier League.
``(Ahmads) not a bad person, everyone knows that, Kutaiba Elrich told The Advertiser on Tuesday.
``He (felt) a bit hard done by when he was dropped from the (2006) World Cup squad.
