It will be interesting to see what greets the players when they return, whether some are on a short leash, or sent packing soon after returning. Something will change, that's for sure. Whether it's a slash and burn exercise remains to be seen, and obviously there are contracted players who are unlikely to be sent packing.

i dunno if it will be a slash ad burn, but i wouldnt be at all suprised if old and brownlie get the chop, espeically if we get both durante, tarka and the other Elrich. interesting times ahead

If a way can be found to pay for it, I can't imagine them having a problem with it.

Yep, people shouldn't be blaming the FFA. They should be blaming NZ Football + Winston Peters for not fronting up with compensation. Of course the Aussies don't want to fund another countries development.

The other elrich signed a two year extension so he's a no go.

Vicelich would be an assett to the team, won't be fazed by standard, has played in a higher and equally quick level.

Elliott no way, to injured.

Chris James would be excellent for us.

The only other New Zealander I'd look at would be Mulligan, but i don't know we can realistically afford him. Even an average League 1 player brings in 2 - 5000 pound a week.

How long is the Mulligan's contract with Port Vale? As he's only just signed it would he come under that three clubs in a year ruling that stopped us signing Sigmund?

which brings us back to a question that got asked a few weeks back

what's the salary cap ?? (i.e - what's the amount per club per season?)

HN??, anyone??

True, there isn't that much cash about for the youth league.  The last proposal I saw had the youth league based in the Eastern states, so there isn't enough cash to make it run into SA & WA, let alone NZ.

The question that will arise is how many of the players that are linked to various clubs at the moment will end up in a new Gold Coast or Townsville franchise?

The following post was made on the FourFourTwo

Website dated 3.2.2008.

Ivan Vicelich to Phoenix (Rumour)

New Zealand veteran Ivan Vicelich is set to return
home for next season in the A-League. The 32 year old
has been plying his trade in the Netherlands, most
recently with RKC Waalwijc. It is likely to be a
2 year deal.

yep, I'd heard that - they better get it sorted quickly, it's a bit mickey mouse  to still have that uncertainty  while teams are recruiting  for next season

Pardon my ignorance, but who the f**k is Richard Jackson?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

true, but most clubs appear to be negotiating player contracts already

i wonder if any 'delay' might work to the advantage of the bottom 4 clubs - e.g. if we do the bulk of our recruiting before the top 4 clubs and before any official change, we will be be able to say to the agents that the cap is currently 1.8 and that extra hundred k would be brought into negotiations towards the end of our recruting and for only a  minority of our signings

Haviing seen Big Ive against Vanuatu (admittedly not the strongest of opposition but he had a solid game none-the-less) I believe he would be a valuable asset in the defensive half of the field... however, I'm a little perplexed why these players from the lower half of League One keep on being linked?

He was on wikipedia for a while. I thought the mention of his hat-trick on debut against China would be enough to raise doubts amongst any sane football fan.

As for Robbie Elliot, if he really has been linked. Wiki says his nickname is the Gosforth Roberto Carlos... is this the kind of fellow we would really want in our search for a solid defense? And he hardly set Leeds alight in his recent spell there...

Yeah he was but I deleted the profile just to make sure that no one fell for this piece of rubbish.

Yeah, we should make an offer to Gallas.

OK admittedly that post wasn't thought out too well... but I've managed to create some reaction outside of the pundemonium thread at last

I suppose what I should have said was: given that last season (or rather this season) our main area of concern was defence... However all the ambitious potential links are in midfield or attack:

Attack: Kevin Phillips (West Brom, top scorer ini Championship), Chris James (Fulham till recently, now trialling with Tampere), Joel Porter (Hartlepool)
Midfield: Ivan Vicelich (RKC Waalwijk), Simon Elliot (Fulham, despite being injured)
Defence: Robbie Elliot (Hartlepool), Richard Jackson (Luton Town), Andrew Durrante (Newcastle, who I admittedly initially forgot, but he would be a decent signing if confirmed)

My question is, why are all the ambitious linkings midfielders and forwards, when it's our backs who are (a) understaffed from last season, and (b) would benefit the most from an experienced, quality signing... Though I concede that Durante would be a decent signing and the last time we tried to sign an experienced international centre back who had played in a top league in Europe, he turned out to be a bit of a dud.

Get a bit nervous when I see too many Fulham players linked to the Phoenix.

Seem to recall the Knights grabbed a player (name elludes me) from their reserve team who went on to score one great goal but was otherwise a complete waste of space.

The Knights also had Fulham's former reserve team coach in charge for all of two seconds before he was dumped.

If we must have rejects, how about some from Man U, or Arsenal, or some club with credibility.

Like Millwall, who could even have a few players to sell off as they face the very real prospect of life in League 2.

We did have a Man U reject at the knights in the first season if you remember (Ben Collet).  By the way he has followed O'Dor's footsteps and retired from footie to head off to Uni.

So many Knights to try and remember ... and so many Knights so easy to forget. (I'd forgotten Collet!)

It's called Wellington Phoenix now, and you're talking about Elrich

(Yes, I clearly am joking, the similarity was just too much to pass up heh).
