Yep, people shouldn't be blaming the FFA. They should be blaming NZ Football + Winston Peters for not fronting up with compensation. Of course the Aussies don't want to fund another countries development.

The other elrich signed a two year extension so he's a no go.

Vicelich would be an assett to the team, won't be fazed by standard, has played in a higher and equally quick level.

The only other New Zealander I'd look at would be Mulligan, but i don't know we can realistically afford him. Even an average League 1 player brings in 2 - 5000 pound a week.

  True, there isn't that much cash about for the youth league.  The last proposal I saw had the youth league based in the Eastern states, so there isn't enough cash to make it run into SA & WA, let alone NZ.

The question that will arise is how many of the players that are linked to various clubs at the moment will end up in a new Gold Coast or Townsville franchise?

i wonder if any 'delay' might work to the advantage of the bottom 4 clubs - e.g. if we do the bulk of our recruiting before the top 4 clubs and before any official change, we will be be able to say to the agents that the cap is currently 1.8 and that extra hundred k would be brought into negotiations towards the end of our recruting and for only a  minority of our signings

Haviing seen Big Ive against Vanuatu (admittedly not the strongest of opposition but he had a solid game none-the-less) I believe he would be a valuable asset in the defensive half of the field... however, I'm a little perplexed why these players from the lower half of League One keep on being linked?

OK admittedly that post wasn't thought out too well... but I've managed to create some reaction outside of the pundemonium thread at last   

I suppose what I should have said was: given that last season (or rather this season) our main area of concern was defence... However all the ambitious potential links are in midfield or attack:

Attack: Kevin Phillips (West Brom, top scorer ini Championship), Chris James (Fulham till recently, now trialling with Tampere), Joel Porter (Hartlepool)
Midfield: Ivan Vicelich (RKC Waalwijk), Simon Elliot (Fulham, despite being injured)
Defence: Robbie Elliot (Hartlepool), Richard Jackson (Luton Town), Andrew Durrante (Newcastle, who I admittedly initially forgot, but he would be a decent signing if confirmed)

My question is, why are all the ambitious linkings midfielders and forwards, when it's our backs who are (a) understaffed from last season, and (b) would benefit the most from an experienced, quality signing... Though I concede that Durante would be a decent signing and the last time we tried to sign an experienced international centre back who had played in a top league in Europe, he turned out to be a bit of a dud.

Get a bit nervous when I see too many Fulham players linked to the Phoenix.

We did have a Man U reject at the knights in the first season if you remember (Ben Collet).  By the way he has followed O'Dor's footsteps and retired from footie to head off to Uni.
