Not good. Ernie was let down. Not all his fault. Certain players needed to have stepped up and thus far they havent
Ernie Merrick - former Phoenix manager
Litfin and Lowry are the ones that really get me. Miles away from our first team but just taking up a spot for a young kiwi
A young Kiwi that travels during international windows as soon as they are anywhere near a professional environment... I'm pretty sure this one was well explained.
I have heard the logic but I 100% do not agree with it. There has to be a pathway for kiwis coming through our academy into the first team otherwise what is the point of the youth set up? Are you saying only kiwis who are close to the starting XI and therefore MORE likely to be in the All Whites should be signed?
He's saying we've got a small squad and need 11 players on the field during international windows. Not sure what you don't agree with there.
Litfin and Lowry are the ones that really get me. Miles away from our first team but just taking up a spot for a young kiwi
Litfin and Parkhouse were the best players in their respective NPL competitions. With Ernie defending those signings:
"First and foremost it has always been the club's intention to give young New Zealanders an opportunity to play professional football," Merrick said.
"I will continue to take that approach but I need to find a balance between New Zealand Football's demands for players in the international window when our Kiwi players are required for the All Whites and the need to field a competitive team.
"My first responsibility is the performance of the Phoenix in the A-League and there is a tremendous amount of talent in Australia's NPL competitions," Merrick said.
Indeed - Litfin is a highly regarded young footballer. Most people on here seem to agree last time it came up but our real problem is that we invest two seasons into young players and then we just let them go without really giving them a chance.
Well other than make up the numbers in the Phoenix reserves he has done nothing since arriving so cannot be that highly regarded. Interesting that since he came into the squad we have seen nothing of Rogerson in the first team - how is that a good thing for either the Phoenix or NZF (assuming that generally, what is good for one is good for the other)?
NZF should work more closely with the 'Nix and come to an agreement not to gut the 'Nix if the 'Nix have a lot of eligible AWs.
Rufer, Ridenton, Fenton, Doyle, Moss, WeeMac, Kosta, Rogerson and Dura have all been capped by Hudson. If we had signed TAHW, Dyer, Brotherton, Adams, Lewis instead of Parkhouse, Lowry, Fox, Litfin and Tratt - we could have 14 players in line for an AWs call up out of a squad of at most 23!
9 AWs in one squad is not that bad.
And if Hudson being Hudson calls them up or they get injured if we have 14 AWs out of a squad of 23...23-14 = 9 players...which is not a match day squad.
And then there was also the whole license thing about the Nix adding value to an Australian competition.
"
Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison and Merrick will front a media conference on Tuesday at midday in Wellington, with no comment available from the club before then.

I really do wonder if WelNix said 'one more game and you're gone' - or if this was genuinely Merrick just making his own mind up after the Adelaide game? Hard to know.
The former would obviously mean we have put a bit of thought into a replacement, the latter puts us in a bit of a tough spot trying to find a replacement prior to the end of the season.

Considering results one would hope WelNix wasn't caught out. But it seems they have been, as no one seems to be waiting in the wings and they instead put in a stop gap (and cheap) 'solution' until the end of the season.
If a champion coach says he's taken the Nix as far as he can, the question I'd like answered is why last is as far as he can take them. I suppose one can't go any further in that direction, But I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant :)

There will be no shortage of candidates
Ifill?
Brett Angell. Had worked with lesser talented squads in SS premiership and managed to acheive high performance. Seems clear in how he wants his teams to play. Is nuts but end of the day performance trumps manner.
If Greeny/Buckingham are in for the rest of the season, why is Rudan coming over, or was that just bullshark?
Ifill?
Gets sacked from Wairarapa United only to get hired at the Nix?!

Which part of the sentence are you referring to? By which I mean: either Simon Hampton or Fox Sport are bullsharking here, or maybe both, it would seem weird if they were both right.
Maybe we've decided to have head coach by committee.

Well, it worked in the former Yugoslavia. Oh wait.
What's are favorite cat-botherer Gareth Morgan up to these days? Surely he's in with a shout?

Which is kinda what a lot of us thought. It clicked for him once in his 3 and a bit year tenure. That isn't good enough.
I'm looking forward to the next worldwide search.... To then appoint Hudson.
Well there were a lot of international names linked to the club, including Ernie who was in Hong Kong. Ultimately Ernie had a really good CV and has done wonders with the club. I wonder how many of the former EPL managers that applied would have stuck around through the license issues.
Of course there's going to be interim managers. No point putting a time frame on it because it'll take as long as it does to find the new coach.

It completely depends on whether Morrison and co actively recruit now or decide to wait until the end of the season to get a bigger name. This can either way really. Greenacre may relish the chance to take control and improve them (not hard at the moment) or things may continue in the same vein.
Some caretaker appointments work out well; Di Matteo at Chelsea (first season) and Gary Monk at Swansea (shouldn't have sacked him) for example.
I think giving Greenacre the rest of the season is wrong. No point in Merrick resigning as they worked in tandem. I really hope this season is not a write off
I hope he doesn't but any odds on Greeney getting the assistant coach gig for the new gaffer?
If he does surely that must be some sort of world record, three assistant gigs for three different managers over a number of years.
If it happens would tell me that this club has no idea.
There's always the tried and true 'two mangers at once' approach to consider.

Tend to agree, whilst Iike Greeny and think he's been a great servant of the club both as a player and now an asst manager he has to accept his part in this dismal start.
Perhaps there has been confusion between the two voices?
There's always the tried and true 'two mangers at once' approach to consider.
Are they French?
Are they French?
Houllier yes, Evans not so much...
Yay now we can get a Kiwi manager who promotes Kiwi players!!!
Its the way forward. Honest! ?

I think this is a very fair summation from Piney

Exceeding expectations off the pitch bought him credit on the pitch that he didn't really earn by performances alone...

I would place money on Rudan being the manager by Wednesday.
Anyway, judging Ernie's 3 seasons - he was well liked off the pitch and did terrific work to bring the club to a new level of professionalism; but on the pitch, the teams he has put out have been largely disappointing.
I'd like to hear what Junior82 has to say on the subject
Whats Vaughan Coveney up to? Wasn't he coaching a VPL team or something?
