So many conspiracy theories that's it's like reading a FOX news forum.

Players join rival clubs. It happens. We got good coin out of it. Move on.

My suggestion, come up with a new Paulsen chant.

What do people think would have happened if we had 'sought assurances this wouldn't happen'?

We ask them if it will happen, they say it might, we say ummm please don't, and they say lol do you want the money or not.

Even if they told us they were planning to do this, it was still a good deal for us.

I'm not that fussed about Alex going to Auckland. Adds a bit of genuine spice to the rivalry. But this is bad news for the Nix in that we want Alex to be successful so that he meets the requirements of the add-ons clauses, as there is something in the region of 2.2 million NZD in it for us if he does. And the move to Auckland makes this less likely.

He needs to at least match his performances from last season at Auckland otherwise he will be even further from a loan move to a decent European level, never mind the Bournemouth first team. And matching his performances from last season will not be easy, especially as the brand new Auckland setup may not be as ideal for him as the Nix was last year.

That is a very interesting angle there, makes very good sense too. I really hope we haven't screwed ourselves out of more money.

We saw with AP at the Olympics that while he still looks like a great keeper he doesn't look as much a star as he did in last seasons Nix team. Teams matter big time.

Absolutely my worry, too. He's already hit one of the highest highs we've seen from an A-League goalkeeper, so is there really much he can do in terms of raising his stock? Can he match those stellar performances last year like Mat Ryan did after his breakout?

I have no issues with this at all except regarding the question of if it works for AP’s development but that’s been done to death above. If it’s just a season before moving on somewhere more competitive then I think that’s fine.

AFC have some good players but a lot of their signings have been underwhelming to date so this is good for them (I realise they’ll be saving some larger signings until closer to the season to drum up media interest).

Nix may not have intended this but they got a payday. Shame for AP though. Could almost be a downgrade depending on your opinion of various coaching staff. Hopefully for AP -and NZ football in general - he has a good season and can move on and up

Just putting it out there, it could be D) they signed an incredibly promising talent that they knew wasn't quite ready for EPL, Then between the signing and now they didn't find the right place for development, maybe other teams signed players between ages ago and now that made them decide he wasn't the A keeper so they sent him to a little club they just created in NZ.

Very possible none of this was plan A, but as far as plan Cs go it's not a bad one to have your starting keeper with your new club being the one that got goalie of the year the year before.

Here’s a conspiracy theory

Maybe the $2000,000 in add ons clause was activated in the event that Alex was loaned to Auckland FC?

If not nothing else really makes sense in Dome’s transfer negotiations.

I have a feeling that the deal with Bournemouth only happened for the Nix because Foley (or actually McFlynn) knew something about the Caceres rule change.  No way an EPL club would have bought Paulsen otherwise, no matter what fairy tales we like to tell ourselves about how good our players are (after one season).
Yes I might be wrong.  But it certainly is an option c) to the options a) and b) put forward by Doloras in an earlier post here.

Poppycock.

Paulsen won a tonne of awards for the Nix last season. Villa signed Joe Gauci , and Gauci was good enough to early on, make the bench in the EPL. Significant difference being Gauci had 3.5 seasons in the ALM, but still a good precedent for Paulsen and Bournemouth. The Cherries will make money out of AP.

I mean the initial reaction on here by some is they got him cheap, about half of what Adelaide got for Gauci - a €1.5m ($2.4m AUD) fee plus add ons. But then again Gauci is older & more experienced.

Yeh, I think a tough business group - which is any or most pro level football clubs will
A) not want to overpay for a young player and
B) want to see a potential one year wonder prove himself further before promoting him to bigger leagues.

They have bought a relatively cheap option on a potentially good young keeper and now let this play out to see how he goes over another season.

We got a decent transfer fee and potential future add ons. AP got a decent pay rise. It's our business plan.

NZ got an amped up rivalry.

Everybody happy. More or less.

Now we want to see AP make 5 of seven on target brillant shot saves versus us, and Auckland lose 2-0. Every derby. 😅

The other feature Paulsen has is a career playing out from the back comfortably off either foot. There’s a lot of managers who need keepers who are comfortable in tight spaces. Unlike some requirements for tactical changes, this is a difficult one for a keeper who hasn’t been doing it to get up to speed with.

Alex has the skill and so that’s an attractive skill for a top team. Look at the grief United had that had lead to Onana.

As someone mentioned here or in the AFC thread, a potential positive for Phoenix fans, is that there is a possibility Paulsen could just be at AFC until the Jan window.

Alex gets a taste of what it's like to play and train for the newest professional FC in NZ for a few months. If he feels it is not further helping his development, considering he's already excelled in this league, Paulsen, with the help of Corica and Foley, tries to get another loan somewhere better for the remainder of the season.

Tony Doc continuing his good start to his career. Of the two, I was gutted when he left Pittodrie.

I see Plymouth with Wayne Rooney in charge lose their first game 4-0, away to Sheffield Wednesday. Ben Waine not part of the squad.

May be to his benefit that he was not involved.  Rooney listed at the shortest odds to be the first manager in any division to be sacked.  I reckon by the end of September at the latest.

Does anyone know why Plymouth would pick Rooney as a manager? Hasn't he failed at every club so far? Must be able to sell himself really well..... Brilliant players don't always make good managers

Probably already been covered but I just stumbled across this article about Troy Hearfield:

There’s just so many examples of former players struggling to reintegrate back into normal life.

I wonder if he's improved his ball skills since 2020 when he left Western United. Looks like he's been playing Thai and Indo football for the last couple of years, although nothing in 2024. I wouldnt be too worried about him if he did turn out for the Knights, he was quick but had nothing else.
