Fever Cup - 10.30am Sunday 2nd Feb at Victoria Park

Hi all,

Had a thought about how best to structure the Fever Cup.

Having the first leg in Feb then the 2nd leg in Dec seems a bit silly, also having it as a 2-legged competition makes it tricky for one off games in other cities (e.g. Napier and Christchurch).

How about instead of having it set up as a home and away competition, we play it like the Ranfurly Shield - win the match = win the cup and hold it until you are beaten.  Keeps it simple and flexible.

Also, I'm probably going to be unavailable from Jan 19 til April 20, which means I'll need a hand organising the Auckland match on Feb 2nd (the Sunday following the Nix game at Eden Park v Adelaide).

I'll book the field etc and get some players together then hand on the contact details.

Any takers?

So the only field available for Feb 2nd in Auckland with posts is Owairaka Domain, Mt Albert.

Reasonably close to the Mt Albert train station and maybe 15-20mins drive from the CBD.

Being it's a Sunday, what time would you lot be flying back to the capital?

4:00pm kickoff sounding ok?

Edit: I don't know why the map is focussing on Owairaka Park, but it will be at Owairaka Domain (with the big red Google maps marker on it) just slightly north of Owairaka Park

My flight back is 7pm on Sunday. Might be a bit tight?

yeah that would be pushing it.

Haven't booked the field yet so kickoff time is still up in the air.

I'll need to book it this week as I'm heading away for initial training with the navy and will be without my phone or broadband until April.

I probably wont be able to make the game myself but I've got Victor and Jamie (came down for the 12 Pubs) primed to organise the Auckcland side of things :)

Earlier the better in terms of people and their flights I imagine.

The later the better in terms of their hangovers.

4pm too late for me, fly out at 2. Something like 10.30 would be best bet I think.

Wait, you mean at the top of Mt Albert? Cool, right round the corner from mine. I'm in.

Nice :) Are you with a local club? If so, any chance you could pinch a set of nets for the day?
If not I can get some from Te Atatu, but the guy organising things while I'm away is in Manukau so it's a bit of a hike

Why don't you have a chat with Chopah on here as he oversees Ellerslie and Michaels Aves artificial.....

He may be able to assist.

Could be worth a go.

Although last time the fever came to play in Auckland the game was played at Bill McKinlay in Panmure (just outside of Ellerslie) and there were complaints that it was difficult to get to in the morning,  Owairaka Domain is a bit closer to town.

Everyone ok with a 10:30am kickoff?

Who's keen to put up their hand to organise the Wellington side?

I'll need to have it booked by Thursday

Schweet, progress :)

  • Patrick is on board to organise the Wellington folk
  • We have a set of nets ready for pickup at Te Atatu
  • Victor is organising the Auckland side while I'm away - victor.dane@gmail.com
  • Field is booked for 9:30am til 2:30pm, plenty of time to set up and clean up :)  Usually a $50 booking fee but they've waived it, yusss!

Sounds good. You're the first two people on the teamsheet.

Need more Wellington players, who's going to be around on the Sunday morning after the game?

If you put enough coffee in me I may be able to manage a Iffy style cameo from the bench (or the bushes depending on how hungover I am)

Patrick was really good at ringing me 10 times until I finally got up last year.

This.

Although this time I can just kick Adam while he's in bed, no need for ringing ;)

Cheers Marshy.

Got 3 players confirmed now, but will shoulder tap some more people at The Pub on Friday night.

I'm available.
I've said that before but this time I'm sure.

I was down to play for the Welly team (even though I've just relocated to Auckland), but was unaware it would be a hungover Sunday game so cannot make it due to family duties.

What was the thoughts around a midday Saturday game?

Surely a pre-game match with beers sounds better than suffering on Sunday morning?

We tried that last year, but people were more keen to go to the pub and drink before the game rather than play football. Also, most of us flying up from Welly arrive late morning/early afternoon, so there isn't really a chance to play it on the Saturday.

Depending on my packing ability I MAY be in. I have carry on only for 8 days in Akl. Will be niggly.

Also, Saturday will be my first drinking session in a month so chances are I'll be in more of a bad way than usual on the Sunday.

End of an era.  Vinnie - It's over.

Thanks Trace!

So, it's highly unlikely that we are going to be able to put out a team of 11 players, and it's going to be an absolute mission to get the few of us who are keen to play to trek out to the Park that michaelme has looked into for us.

Is there any location on or very close to Queen St that we could set up a few cones and play a 5v5 game? I think that doing that would be a lot more accesible for the travelling Fever who will be able to just get out of bed in the morning, grab some brekky and wander to the park, instead of having to worry about transport out and everything. Plus, the hangovers we will all be sporting will much prefer a 5v5 than a full pitch 11v11.

I just think doing a 5v5 close to Queen St will be a lot more fun.

Victoria Park. Or on the wharves.

Victoria Park looks like a perfect location, thanks. I've just emailed Victor who's organising the Auckland team to get his thoughts on moving to Victoria Park and playing a smaller game.

Accch, sorry, colleagues, I have to pull out. My Gaelic football team has to win their final game of the season to win the league, at 12.15, and I need to be there an hour before kickoff. :(
