Just read the article about Ifill taking a bunch of boots back to Barbados for their amateur players, due to bugger all $$ in their association, and I was wondering if there's anything we could do.

I'm not sure what or how.. but it could be seen as a worthy cause.

Thoughts?

happy to donate $20 if we go that way. Otherwise I could donate some shorts and a few tops but my size is XS so I doubt many amateur players would fit them. Maybe for the kids?

Anyone know how to contact Ifill and ask him what would be the best thing we could do to help? eg Gear or $$ or what

I'm game, depends what they need mostly I guess?

I too would like to make a donation.

Perhaps one of the YF team could contact the Nix office and suggest Paul open a donation account at the ASB ?

Yeah, sending those to Barbados? That's like sending lamb, timber and rugby-loving tabloid journos to NZ.

I have a pair of size 12 Puma boots (blades) that I would happily donate for the cause.
I used them for summer twilight football, so had maybe 6 or so short games in them.

Has Ifill shipped off on the plane already?

and Malta?

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

If Malta is in the same position, then i don't see why not.

Perhaps even find ways to raise some more $ and get a youth triallist from Barbados / Malta each year on a YF scholarship

I think he means Maltese football, which might be suffering if it's not a major sport (god knows what they do play over there).

I think this is an awesome idea anyway, for the Barbados boys. More than happy to support something. If Paul's leaving direct from the Gold Coast it might be a liitle short on time, but maybe we could send stuff/money over at a later date?

Don't go there. Somewhat like sending old computers (that still work) to the PIs - a little use and then their waste.

[quote=Wikipedia]Football is the most popular sport in Malta. The national stadium is called Ta' Qali Stadium. It is generally noted that the population tends to be split half and half with regards to supporting Italy or England in football, due to the cultural affinities of the island. The national football team has won several matches over big opponents that reached the final phases in World Cups, such as Belgium , Hungary and Greece.

Depends on the quality and usage of the boots.

They'd generally last longer than computer equipment in the PIs - mostly due to the higher salt content in the air in PIs generally cause corrosion faster in electronics.

I have boots that have a bit of dirt on them, otherwise great condition. I am sure someone without a pair would be grateful for wearing them as long as they could.

Ah sweet, cheers for that. That's one trip to Wikipedia I don't need to make.

Hi,

thanks for the support!!  If you do have any spare boots please feel free to drop them in the Phoenix store!  Paul leaves for Barbados on Sunday so will be taking an extra suitcase with him!!

Thank you so much.  It's so lovely to see so much support, not only for this cause, but for the many of you helping support our t-shirt design competition for Cure Kids in memory of my baby cousin George!  Check out www.sunshinestyle.co.nz

In case you missed it, here us launching the competition on Good Morning!

Harry a pair of your legendary size nines would be held in such high esteem that they would probably become  president or something !

Hey mods,

Any way of giving these two good causes some more prominence? Sticky this thread at least...

Elle,

Does Paul have any idea of boot sizes his teammates need?

This has got me thinking about kids football. We go through a boot size a season (sometimes two if we are unlucky).

I could be organised and hock these boots off but I can't be @rsed.

Although they have been used they are in good nick and would have at least one or two more seasons' use.

Is there any scheme that we could donate these old boots to that might be appreciated by some kids in e.g. pacific islands or other places that might not have the privilege of flailing about in Karori Park in winter (or not as is usually the case when games get cancelled)?

guys let's be a bit careful that we're not being patronising here. These guys are still playing world cup qualifiers - they're probably not that keen on an old pair of muddy size nine mid range pumas and some mismatched tracksuits...

J82's idea of boots for the pacific to me seems something we're more likely to be able to help out with and is a great ideajames dean2010-09-30 11:40:54

I was expecting Paul would be taking new pairs over with him?

Either way good condition boots, they can give to youth or local players there. Better than them gathering dust or going to the tip

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your support on this.  It's very much appreciated.  The boys have donated boots so all I'm after now is 3 X US 10 1/2 and 2 X US 10.

This will mean a lot to the Barbados boys, and I know they will be extremely grateful for your support.

Thanks again,

Iffs

I like the idea but don't just give them crap half broken boots which will just end up in a Barbadian tip.  Decent ones that they can get some use out of is the way to go.

I do like the idea of a Barbadian coming over on a scholarship with the Phoenix.  Unfeasible, I'm sure, due to funds but a nice idea.

The tragic thing is that all the money that should be going into support for poor countries like Barbados is probably buying Jack W another mansion somewhere. Obscene is not the word.

We could get the YF T-Shirt Design team to come up with a "Retro Iffy T" to raise some funds...
