Good point Tegal, though if I remember correctly they usually wave in unison when the Hurricanes score.

For me it also starts here on this forum. In my opinion, far too often I find myself scrolling through these forums and just see so much hate, arguing and negative comments towards each other. I'm not complaining at all... but I feel like there could be a focus on encouraging a more positive attitude. This is something that COULD be deterring new members from joining these forums.

Just a thought........

Wait, are you hating on all the haters :)

You're right. Hard to be positive last season, but that's last season. Let's move along.

So my 2 cents worth, from someone who hasn't been around for 5 years.........

the key thing which made the zone so popular when it first began was that it was unique - there was no other sporting event that you could attend in NZ that was like it.  It was organic and spontaneous, without songsheets or chanting rehersals (which, believe it or not was suggested before our first game) and that meant that everyone felt apart of it.  It wasn't something that a small group of people organised and tried to get other people to join into - it was something that was just happening and anyone could be part of it.  There seems to be a lot of effort and focus on flags and banners recently, which should not be ignored but I do not think that is what will really draw people in. Anyone can create a banner at the cricket, and the Hurricanes give out flags, so there is nothing unique about it.

It seems now that one of the problems that is continually mentioned is that there are no new songs and there are not enough of them.  Well, for me anyone can change that. I don't think that there needs to be a whole raft of new songs every season - the key is just having a solid number of classics that are simple, and easy for everyone to pick up on.  I look back on what was sung at the start and while some of them may not be relevant anymore, they were quick, simple and easy for everyone to pick up straight away.  "Seagull", "Marely" "Who are ya?" and "We're not Auckland anymore"  - not brilliant or complicated chants, but something that got everyone joining in.  That consistent singing gave people the confidence to start their own chants, which bred the atmosphere.

As a side note, if "we're not Auckland anymore" isn't still chanted, it fucking should be.

Key points:

1) Making the singing simple, catchy and constant - that is the unique selling point of the zone, and needs to be at the forefront of everyone who is in theres mind.  There will always be some chants that are more original (and often trickier) but too many of those mean that people are unsure of the words, and that breeds nervousness.

2) keep it as positive as possible - if we ever conceed a goal, there should be an immediate chant of "we're going to win 2-1" (or 4-3 or 7-6, etc)

3) Make it fun - bring back DISCO, and if anyone ever sees a girl with a guy on the pitch, they should start with "is she really going out with him?".

4) More "we're not Auckland anymore" - a) it highlights that we are a Wellington team that should be playing in Wellington, and b) it reminds people that Auckland could not sustain an A League team and (so far) we can (to a point).

5) talk up the singing again - when it started that was what everyone told their mates at work/people they met in the pub/etc.  It was all everyonr spoke about.  The first game of the season under the new regime will be decent - new team, new style, etc.  Brilliantly I will be missing it (again) but everyone who cares about growing the zone should be focused on creating a loud and positive atmosphere that will get people buzzing again.

Not bad for a grown up. I agree.

With Santy in Auckland I think you should be the new custodian of DISCO.

Alternatively, singing "Nil-2 to the Phoenix" or "1-2 to the Phoenix" or whatever works quite well in a we-don't-fucking-care-what's-actually-going-on-we're-gonna-sing-about-it-regardless sort of way. And I agree that straight after conceding is prime-time for getting a few chants going.

Good post Frankie. As far as new chants go - I know a lot of people hated hearing this sung at volume from the next changing room by that nasty bunch of arseholes known as the BNU first team but I've always thought "In Dublin's fair city" would make a great Phoenix chant. I might put that in the Chants thread and wait for the abuse to roll in.

I genuinely believe that a chant doesn't need to have anything to do with the team/club/fans - if it is fun to sing, and everyone can join it, get it going.

Agreed. How about Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" then?

Frankie, with your recent experience of watching live EPL football, you should have quite a few ideas for new chants or even common ones that we maybe don't utilise over here. I feel we don't use "There's only one (insert name) " as much as we should. Especially after one of our players has scored or put in a goal saving tackle etc.

Also, instead of Same old Aussie's, use the name of the team we are actually playing. Makes it more personal and attacking against that team and possibly any travelling supporters.

Touching on a point I saw before about losing the younger demographic..

Chants and songs to the tune of songs pre 1990 don't always help when getting them going in the zone..

For instance, I'm 22... I just had to google Leo sayer.

Let's not get too far off topic.

Fair point Stef, but maybe chuck up some potential chants based on current songs in the chants thread.

Personally I don't think it matters too much the music behind the song as long as it's easy to pick up and continue (which was Frankie's point - keep it simple and catchy).

I do shake my head sometimes at some of the convoluted suggestions some folks throw up. So I can sympathise with Stefan's position.

So far we have a few good key upgrades to the Zone:

1. A new "core" of Fever folks (old timers) positioned a bit further back up the Zone who can get and keep chants going.

2. Some way for folks to learn the chants that isn't a song sheet etc.

3. Get there earlier.

4. Flags + banners etc.

Another thought - a little left field - game day in the Fever Zone shouldnt have a huge emphasis on pubs + drinking imo.

Theres a lot of us who arent really into the pub scene but are very much loud and proud YF members.

Think theres a slight perception that we are a whole lot of drunk 30-somethings with our tops off. Sure thats a decent chunk, but theres a whole lotta fun with the chants and atmosphere as well which sometimes doesnt translate as well to other fans.

Another good point.
I don't drink now (through choice, not necessity) and I think there is a kind of drinking culture within some people/ groups in the zone, or people who get smashed and ruin games for other people through being too drunk, loud and obnoxious or confrontational. I've seen all of that over the years in the zone and since I stopped drinking I found that that part of it was off putting when deciding where to go in the zone or where I take friends.
So when I see posts encouraging people to get down to the pub on game days and advertising drink specials I tend to stay away.

Then people tell me I am anti social for not going to the pub or zone... When sometimes it's purely down to that person becoming a f*ckwit when they are drunk.
This also in turn (in my opinion and experience) alienates the younger fans from getting involved.

Bit of a rough opinion?
I'm not pointing the finger at the zone as a whole though.

Just as someone on P1 of the thread mentioned that they wished YF wasn't so much about getting to the boozer or such. IMO there isn't a concious decision by YF to make it all about the booze, more that the 3 or 4 folk that are seen to the the organisers of YF would prefer to spend their match day socialising with like minded people.
Not having a go at you Stefan - but I'm a bit fed up coming onto these forums and seeing folk whinging along the lines of "YF should be doing this, that or the next thing" - yet rather than sitting gurning, no one shows any initiative to do anything different. It's seems folk want everything done for them. Why should it be up to the same half doz folk that it's been for the last 6 years, to organise everyone's match day entertainment for them.
If some of the young un's that have not much more to contribute other than getting blotto, swearing at the top of their voice, chucking bottle and generally making a right royal pain in the arse of themselves in the YF zone, diverted some of that enthusiasm into creating tifo or contributing constructively to the atmosphere, then it would be better for all.

I agree with that.

I remember starting a thread about tifo's a while ago asking for help and the response I got was along the lines of "that's a nice idea Stefan, I hope people help, but it won't be me".

And just like me suggesting newer songs... I've got no suggestions at this stage. I'll try and back it up later with something.

Well. I just stuck one up on the chants thread, it's simple and easy which seems to be what is required! (And doesn't involve new wave romantic pop hits either!)
