I remember it used to be a probably after a season or so. Every goal that was scored etc people would give those around them a beer shower.

Never see it happening anymore.

Maybe that has what has burned the people off.

Here's my 2 cents worth (Expecting to get flamed)

1] Why have the numbers declined? Is it results? Is it that the novelty has worn off? Is it fans have moved to other areas of the ground? Is it that they have just given up coming due to things such as financial cost of attending?

2] I thought the idea of splitting the YF into two bays was wrong a few years back. Sadly, the gap left wasn't filled by others wishing to join the zone.

3] I sit elsewhere for several reasons. One being getting sick of being covered in beer by some half-pissed moron (I never encountered that at other football games I attended overseas. Having said that, the self policing in the Zone is usually pretty good but now I prefer the other reason in that by sitting opposite the Fever, I get to hear you guys in full force and whether the ground is near empty or full, you certainly can be heard and it sounds great.

4] New chants? Sounds good idea. The usual ones are getting a bit worn/tired.

5] One thing I did notice, was at games in CHCH, Auckland, Ring of Dirt & Dunedin - most fans there were the hardcore Feverites and these people were a lot of fun to be with. The banter, friendliness is something to enjoy. I think it is the behaviour of the part-time associates back in Wellington that put some people off.

6] This very site has been consistant - consistantly positive about the Phoenix and geeing people up before a game. The Back Bencher, 4 Kings have always been very good to fans too. The banners have been excellent.

7] So what to do about it? Well, threads like this for s start. It will hopefully bring out some honest comments and views.

8] What ever happened to our "Fever Friday" exercise? Always great fun but even better before a game takes place. It helps make the public aware. As for the Fever Zone, perhaps a few timely phone calls to various radio station before match day, inviting people to come and sample the atmosphere in there. Obviously not for patrons with kids nor those whom like to sit down during a game.

9] Perhaps the fickle fans may come back, perhaps we were reliant too much on the "Student factor"?

I sincerely hope this message helps, if even just to throw a few thoughts out there. I will of course still support you guys and I always look forward to catching up with that hardcore group at our games around New Zealand. You are awesome people who's company I enjoy.

I think results and performances are the number 1 issue.  It's hard to get excited and chant and make loads of noise when the team in front of you are serving up garbage week in, week out.  Hopefully that'll change next season.

Another issue IMO are some of the chants.  It's (mostly) the same stuff every week and it's gotten a bit boring to be honest.  "Who are ya (repeat ad nauseum)?" every time a player comes close to the corner.  "You don't know what you're doing (repeat ad nauseum)" every time the ref gets it wrong.  "Same old Aussies, always cheating (repeat ad nauseum)" every time the ref gets it wrong.  Also the fact that these songs appear to be sung in some sort of faux-English accent seems quite bizarre to me.  Let's not even get started on "Stand up....for the Phoenix" and it's out of tune delivery!

I'm not proclaiming to have a load of ideas for new chants incidentally, I am just giving an opinion on what may have turned people off the zone over time.

And much as I hate to say it, we could maybe do with some more boisterous youths in the zone.  Hibs have a group now called 'Section 43' who are basically a variation on the Yellow Fever, but they are mainly 15-24 ish as far as I can make out, and they do appear to make a lot of noise at all games, have plenty of flags, stand at all games (usually right up the back of the stand) and do other stuff that some don't approve of such as let off flares etc (personally, I like the flares!)...all in all, they create a fairly good atmosphere.

Not sure if it's my imagination, but is that demographic (mid-late teens / early 20s) fairly sparse at Phoenix games?

Nah I agree big time (minus the flares). We're missing that bunch at the front of the zone jumping about with flags/streamers the whole game etc, and those that are anti flags and just want to stand and sing/chant can still stand as they do now higher up with the unobstructed view

Yellow is a hard colour though cause not many people have it - think we might be more successful if we went for blue or red or something

I know some people aren't really into it but I quite like seeing folks dressed up in varying degrees of bonkers.

Always good to see Ard Choille's Family Guy mask.

Was in no way implying that.  You know how much I love to dress up!  Almost figured out my 12 Pubs costume for this year already.

Will be hard to top last years. That was top notch.

Iluvnix is a perfect example of what I mean. Tutus, bumble bees, yellow and black version of Mrs Claus.

It's more than just chucking on a stripey and scraf. Fun, different, exciting sort of stuff.

If we did a dress up day could do prize for best costume in the zone or something.

As I said, just an idea. But could be fun.

At one of the ICC Champions trophy games there was a big group of people dressed as bananas. I've seen these costumes used a lot of other places as well. Anything yellow and black on dress up day but bananas as an example. I'm sure there will be far better ideas as well.

Fuck this stupid game

Dress up day would be fine, but I also like seeing the various characters who dress up all the time. That's the main thing that distinguishes it from the I'm-gonna-be-so-crazy-for-just-one-weekend novelty of the Sevens as well. It takes persistence and dedication to wear a tutu or a family guy mask or whatever every single week!

Perhaps you might have something there Smithy.

If I could flesh our a brain fart I just had..... Pick every other home game as a theme for the Zone. It might be that one week you have a Dress Up Day. Perhaps another home game you have a different theme ('Bring your Doris' day, 'gumboots and rain jackets' day) but all in the theme of yellow and black. Those are two ideas I just had but there could be much better ones ('Bring your trumpet' day)

Yeah I think that's achievable.

The only thing I'd flag up is that it can be time consuming to promote - so would need some fans to help us out to push it.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
