Fit To Play - Will The Nix Be Ready?

Last season the Nix squad was prepared pre-season by a former top English football fitness "guru" (can't remember his name, but he'd worked with some of the EPL's top teams and players).

On reflection, how successful was that experiment?

Is the same guy still on board to get the Nix fit for the new season?

What, if anything will/should the Nix do differently this year regarding fitness?

(Hey, we've got to talk about something over the next few months.)

isn't the guy's name Ed Baranowski or something like that? I read somewhere in this forum that someone (could be him) who is responsible for the fitness side of things, will be working with the Nix on a part-time base in order to monitor the players' progress.

I can't find the article though sorry.

In my opinion they will definitely be ready.. I mean, the off-season is like 6 months long anyway, you cannot not be ready!

I believe the guy's (Ed Baranowski is the name I think)involvement with the team ended pretty early on in the season.

Everyone said that the Phoenix's fitness was superior to most of the others due to the work Ed put in.  However, come start of the season, no difference between Phoenix and other teams at all.

Unfortunately I can't provide a reference for this but I read the other day that Ed left the Phoenix early into the season as quite a few players were annoyed with his 'successful but scientific methods'. The same article also suggested Ed was likely to return for the pre-season and hopefully they could work around the issues to keep him on board for longer.

Personally I think it would would be great to see, I felt early on we could rely on our fitness later in the matches to get us through but that reassurance died towards the end of the league. Will need Ed's skills if we get some quality strikers, to keep them up to speed as well as them naturally being on target.Elmo_Rises2009-03-25 15:26:01

Elmo, if you can find that reference - and your memory hasn't let you down - share it with us.

I reckon that statement - if true - would say more about player arrogance than Ed's methods.

And may provide a few answers as to why some of our players didn't deliver last season.

In fact, some didn't even turn up, even though they were on the pitch!

Anyone think of a few names?

Reference is http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/local-sport/1995991/Phoenix-lose-major-sponsor and the term used for players is 'frustrated'. Also says Phoenix are hoping for Ed to come back pre-season and hopefully stay on part-time as consultant so wasn't too far off.

Sorry if the link doesn't work, its the 'Phoenix lose major sponsor' article still available on Stuff.

Update: Made the link work on its own.Elmo_Rises2009-03-25 16:37:16

Cheers, Elmo, for the link. Here are the important paras in full.

Meanwhile, Ed Baranowski is set for a return as strength and conditioning consultant. Baranowski's services were not required from early last season after some players became frustrated with his scientific but highly successful and proven methods.

"By the end of it we probably realised he had done an admirable job, so we are close with Eddie coming back on a part-time consultancy basis," Pignata said.

"He can't commit fulltime given the travel commitments but he would run the pre-season programme and then monitor things through the year."

That quote from Tony P sounded like he had a few doubts. Wonder if the disgruntled players  got in his ear. His praise of Ed certainly reads as less than effusive. "...probably realised he had done an admirable job.

But, to be fair, Tony and the gang are getting Ed back, so maybe some players are just going to have to suck it up (so to speak) and train like professional footballers.

And then take that attitude onto the pitch and play like pros. We can but hope!

It's a newspaper article auskiwi, so unless you've worked with or at least met the whole squad there's no reason to call them ""Bloodly mummys boys". Oska2009-03-26 07:23:13

"Bloodly". Great word. Rhymes with "Cuddly".

Dictionary says"Bloodly" means, "Like a Daniel". (As in: 'That was blloodly pathetic.')
