$750,000 for a couple of kick-and-kiss friendly games against two teams from some country that can't even get out of its group at the World Cup?!?!! What an outrage!!!!!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/10209395/750-000-price-tag-for-football-double-header

Typical budgie, he doesn't actually have a source for that figure yet he runs with it. In fact the council disputed that it was $750k

The one about the car with Durante and Brockie?

It's a amazing.

If ever they remake The Godfather than Brockie needs to play Don Corleone. The gravitas he brings to his line about cars - sublime. Method Acting at it's pinnacle.

MONEY SPINNING EPL GAMES FOR THE NIX
By Matheson Sports Media

An English Premier League team will play in New Zealand later this year, Matheson Sports Media can reveal.

The Wellington Phoenix has been locked in discussions with two EPL teams for nearly a year.

In the last week negotiations have taken a significant step forward with an insider saying the tour now “will happen”.

Depending on the next phase of negotiations the Nix will either entertain one or two EPL sides in Auckland and Wellington in July.

While dates have yet to be confirmed, the venues – Auckland’s Eden Park and Wellington’s Westpac Stadium - are close to being locked in.

The two July games will offer the Nix a chance to drive some much needed monies into their business.

Crowds at Westpac have been disappointing this season and a cash injection from potential sell-outs in Auckland and Wellington will help take the financial pressure off the front office.

New Zealand has hosted numerous top flight English clubs in the past - including the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – but in recent years have had to watch on as Australian football played host to powerhouses like United and Liverpool.

It’s a tribute to Nix CEO David Dome – currently in Australia at an A-League CEO’s meeting - that he has been able to secure the deals.

He has worked tirelessly – this time last year he was close to securing a deal with EPL giants Spurs, but in the end the maths just didn’t work.

This year the numbers add up and an announcement of the identity of the sides is pending.

EPL clubs traditionally release their off-season tour plans in the first week of April.

I think they are quite well done. The script is good (I found Dura's Aussie accent of the word 'Shed' to sound a bit like 'shit') and its quite light. Shows our lads in a good light. I like the new tracksuits too. Time for Brockie to have a shave though.

26,000 Gone For 26 July

Over 26,000 tickets have gone for the historic Carlsberg Football United Tour Wellington double header involving the Phoenix, West Ham, Newcastle and Sydney FC.

Wellington Phoenix General Manager David Dome said the Club was thrilled with the sales to date and was looking to put on a full day of activities around the football matches.

“With three weeks to go, there are less than 6,000 tickets available which we are really pleased about.

“Historically these events sell strongly in the last weeks so we are urging fans to purchase quickly or they will miss out

“It will be a full day of activities, with plenty for families to do and for sports fans to get excited about.”

Yellow Fever spokesperson Guy Smith said that fans were eagerly anticipating what promises to be a huge afternoon of football.

"It should be a huge day, with two great games on and a chance to check out the new Nix signings,” Smith said.

“You'll be gutted if you miss it."

We have had great kits since moving back to Adidas.  I got an away shirt when Reid joined the club but that was only because I could get it signed by him, but apart from that I don't think I have never purchased a West Ham shirt. Thinking about getting years away shirt though - I am an absolute whore for a sash.

No one is going to pay this 40 dollar fee after seeing the world cup for free, right? Got a prior commitment which means I can't make it to the games in Welly, but was looking forward to watching the Auckland and dunedin games on TV.

I would be. But decided to pay more and go up to see it live.

$25 to see the game on tv, $150+ to fly up to Auckland for the night to see it. Tv seems like a bargain to me.

Another $15 to see all of the games on tv, even better.

$10 per game on tv vs airfares and accommodation for Auckland and Dunedin.

Especially for a game like this, the atmosphere will be absoultely fantastic to go to. I'd happily pay the money to actually go to the match if i could, but watching on tv a match which is just a pre-season game for 40 bucks doesn't seem like a great deal to me. It's not a terrible deal, but it's not likely to encourage union and league fans to watch.

Also the weekend it's on isn't great. Super rugby playoffs plus the first weekend of the Comm games (don't laugh, some people watch it).

Why should I have to pay the Phoenix anything at all for these matches? After being such a loyal supporter to them over the past few years they should be giving me free tickets to all 2 venues, flying me from Wellington to Dunedin to Auckland and back to Wellington, paying for my accommodation and giving me access to the Pay per View content on Sky for no cost so I can record the games and rewatch them.

Its $10 a match to watch them all on tv. Or $25 for one. I don't think that's too bad, like I said I'd pay it. There are always people who will find it too pricey, but at the end of the day the club will have set it at a price that they think will generate the most revenue .

Actually, I don't think it'd be a terrible idea for ticket holders to be given exclusive access to a replay on PPV channel a day or two after the game, as part of their ticket price. That is one thing that makes it a bit disappointing for some people who are paying a bit of money to actually attend the games.

I mentioned much the same thing early on. If you have shelled out tickets to the match then the PPV watch should be included or the ability to watch it on TV at a later stage somehow. That may not make financial sense to those selling it but the outlay of the $90 or whatever to go is significantly of more benefit to the Phoenix that a proportion of the PPV money Sky would give them. Besides, those that get smashed and miss some of the game will want to watch a replay later on.

Having said that, if Sky wait for a week to show a replay, I would be entirely cool with that as well.

Offering the live feed only opens it up to people giving their mates access, and would make no sense as you should be at the game anyway.

A replay a week later would work, but they may be worried about people not paying for the PPV and just waiting for that replay instead, plus a week is quite a long time to wait for a replay to a game you went to.

That's how I arrived at a separate PPV replay a day or so later that people with tickets were given access to. Don't know how practical that is though.

I still think it's a crazy idea. It's not about people wanting something for nothing (particularly when Sky is not free). If this was such a huge draw, Sky would be giving Phoenix money for the rights to show it, and enough that PPV was not required for income.

Dangerous precedent IMO. Next it'll be finals all on PPV, World Cup qualifiers, Rugby World Cup etc...

Won't be paying the $40 as I'm going to the Wellington games but will prob watch the Auckland game at the pub. Zero interest in the Dunedin game.

The thing is we have no idea what conditions any of the clubs etc requested to get these matches off the ground. I would imagine the prospect of Sky showing these games would have been a large part of the reason West Ham and Newcastle came over.  Why come over if no one outside the stadiums are going to see them?

Yeah it's crap paying extra. It's crap paying extra for anything but It's the real world not some fairy lala land where companies do stuff out of the goodness of their hearts.

I don't remember signing my Sky contract on the condition that I should be able to watch premier football clubs without extra cost should they ever appear in New Zealand - silly me.

"A dangerous precedent?" Sky have been charging extra for some sporting events for years including frankly appalling boxing that is often lucky to go past the first couple of rounds. I don't understand this outrage, this is nothing new, at least if you pay you'll be getting 90 minutes.

I've not see a live premier football team in years, when I went back home I only got a chance to see my local team Cambridge United. I think it's f*cking amazing we are having these games. I can't imagine what a West Ham or Newcastle Phoenix fan must be feeling to see their two favorite teams playing each other.

We are always going on about raising the profile of the game and getting people interested. What better way is there than having these sorts of tours?

Rather than moaning, as others have said just go and watch it down the pub, no one is forcing you to pay.

Bet you are happy to see Cambridge back in the Football League. You know Harry Habin? I think part of what erks me over PPV is that if these visiting teams de ide to field half a team kf reserves, will you get value? Everyone is hoping to see their best starting 11. But what if they dont see them?

Nah didn't know him.

I still rather see half a team of reserves and first team players than none at all. I also can't see it being in the best interest of a traveling team to leave all their big players out though.

Clubs that do these tours are drumming up support from old fans as well as signing up new ones. A shirt bought at St James on match day is no different from one bought online from some kid in Palmerston North.
