think breaking even was the aim tbh.

Intangible benefits of this are pretty huge JD.

They'd have liked to turn a profit, but to break even and get these teams out here (and beat west ham) is a win overall.

Whether they'd do it again if they'll only break even is a different question entirely.

What price the growth of the brand?.

Us beating the Hammers is just gravy

Again agree. You would think maybe their "break even point" maybe included a 10 % margin. But it was just to illustrate the quantum of costs involved

I don't agree with that mate - Dome has spoken before of this as a potential alternative revenue stream (along with the usual Welnix  won't keep funding a loss making club forever).  They'd like to do this every year if they could make money off it.  Too much effort involved, as well as financial risk, to just aim to break even

I wonder how exact those break even crowd numbers are in reality and what the number crunching actually covers. Does it for example take into account 60000 patrons over the three games (many whom may not have been to a Phoenix game before) purchasing merchandise at the game? Think there a load of spill over benefits here.

On the thought of buying merchadise at a Phoenix game, I went last year in Christchurch and all they sold was some T-shirts.

Wanted to buy a scarf but nothing...

I'm not entirely sure, but I think once you take PPV into consideration then they'd probably make a profit.

Open to being corrected on that though.

I was lucky to be in the hosted area. Veitch was MC, and 1 speaker was Noah Hickey (didn't realise he was on the Nix board). Anyway, he indicated the top tier teams, eg Liverpool, would be over $10m to bring over. Who knows how accurate that is, but even with West Ham I think the numbers are pretty scary.

Definitely think the Phoenix won a lot of new fans from that corporate area with their performance last night, as did the Fever fans

Why I was suggesting to have a look at the sportsfreak article was it sets out some of the costs. 80 x business class airfares or bwttwr from the uk. Hotel rooms for 80 for a week. Meal costs. Flights within NZ. 40 flights from Sydney. Buses at beck and call of 3 teams for a week and then appearance fees plus stadium hire costs. Pretty easy I would have thought to see why ticket costs are what they are.

Someone suggested bringing out a top flight side such as Liverpool. It is runoured their fee for one match in Melbourne last year was 5m. Victory needed to sell 90000 tickets to make that work.

if we want EPL opposition here this is the price you have to pay. Given they are so close to budgeted crowd numbers shows they really have it spot on in my view

That's not right though is it, you wouldn't spend a year's worth of work and all the time and effort on a tour like this to break even (even with spin off benefits of exposure etc).  They're doing to to make money - they will be very disappointed if they only break even.

shit results at the tail end of the season meant we were in a rut. This was to dig us out of it. Otherwise we would have lost season ticket holders and had cagey spectators early doors. They tagged this event hard to renewal. Well played all round.

Fair point, but they were planning this long before we had our terrible end to the season

Another potential benefit of these 2 quality EPL matches will be a well primed squad leading into the first of the FFA Cup matches.. v Adelaide IIRC

It's kind of annoying that we the fans wear the cost of such things when these EPL times could easily fund the entire thing themselves with pocket change!

Yes, I know they're not going to fly out for free, just making the point that it's ironic we're trying so hard to break even while these clubs have absolute truckload of cash at their disposal.

There is an alternative option if this ambitious tour proves too costly for Welnix. There's often an EPL side touring Australia in the offseason, why not pay for a NZ extension to that. Bring out one EPL side and play two games against, one in Wellington and one in Auckland. Don't bother about bringing out another A league side. If the EPL side wasn't top four wouldn't that be more viable if you got gates of 20,000+?

I do think the Phoenix brand has earned a lot of positive points from the game against West ham, even if it cost money. It has kick-started your expectations after two seasons in the doldrums and the result has attracted a lot of attention. That's priceless. If the Phoenix can kick on and get results early on in the A League season I'm sure it will be rewarded with more bums on seats. I don't think you can just measure the value of the WHU and NU tour in terms of whether it makes money.

Had the Nix had a humiliating result against WHU however, like SFC's against NU, then it would be a different story.

Yeah it isn't a bad idea. A club could be interested in coming over to NZ (a different market) after playing a game in Australia. And an A league club might be interested in sharing the costs.

Makes sense as well to fit two games into the trip with the length of the flights.

Would we both need to pay $250k to the FFA?

I think a little tournament with a couple of A-League teams and a single PL team.

It would help share the costs, but I'd put money on the fact that we'd end up with a midweek game. At least by controlling this tour ourselves we've ended up with the big Saturday event in Welly.

The two games in Aucks and Dunners were purely because neither team would come all the way here for just one game. The aim was always to hit the "break even" crowd figure (or exceed it, of course) at those games, and then come back to Wellington, sell the stadium out and make profit. Given the previous two games were so close to breaking even and tomorrow is so close to selling out, I'd say that it's worked out perfectly.

Could've had the sydney games in Australia and made a bigger profit, but decided to keep it a nz only event.

Kind of shows how it wasn't ALL about making a massive profit doesn't it?

Just been and watched West Ham training. Even though I'm an Arsenal fan it was still pretty cool to be able to see a Premiership team training and up close. They did a signing at the end of the pitch afterwards although only Allardyce and a handful of players (Reid, Downing, Collins, Jarvis and a couple of others I didn't recognise) seemed to stay behind to do that which was a bit disappointing.

Some may have left as they were going to Midland Park.

In other news, just looked at Ticketek and there are $59 bronze tickets available for tomorrow which is great and I hope they sell out, however they are selling tickets in equivalent sections to West Ham, YF and Newcastle for $115?! Bit of a rort if you ask me, unless these $60 tickets are 'new'?

possibly wouldn't have got the travelling WHU and NU fans coming to NZ if that was the case. although i don't know what kind of numbers that would be.

Pretty sure these are new. I've been looking at tickets fairly regularly over the past few weeks and the Silver ones have been all that's been available.

Nix facebook and twitter just said they were returned by corporates.

Never heard of that happening before. Its either bs, or they were proactive in getting corporates to return them rather than leaving them empty - Which I applaud.

Pay to fly Newcastle and West Ham to Sydney, then take all the revenue from gate sales and Australian PPV? I like it!

We do already get revenue from Australian PPV. But you probably wouldve got more than the 10k that dunedin got for example.

On his phone a lot of the time then near the end he took Noble and someone else on the field with him standing still on the penalty spot for Noble to try and cross over him to the striker.

Went to that too. A handful of players from each team but no stars really. Taylor, Gouffran, Anita, Vuckic, Dummett, Aarons for Newcastle and Vaz Te, Demel, Adrian, Diame, Potts, O'Brien for West Ham.

For the Phoenix it was Caira, Rufer, Hicks, Brindell-South and Blake. Mrs Dome stood up and encouraged people to buy tickets too.

It seems Wenger and Van Gaal aren't fans of these tours.

Watched NUFC train this morning. I think the nix well get thumped. They were so good. Pardew had a laugh with the crowd and seemed to enjoy being there. They all stopped for autographs outside the bus but also encouraged us to come to midlands park. Very cool.

Well they are certainly better than the Hammers; so guess we'll see. We will have tired legs too.

Either way, it was important that we beat West Ham to give us a chance to make a profit.

I actually thought they looked pretty crap. I'd be ashamed to support them based on that training session mate
