I could see him playing on of two roles:
Either in a 442 replacing Brown or Lia.
OR
Replacing Daniel/ Bertos and playing more of a 4231 / 451/ 4213 depending on how you interpret the formation

                     Muscat Sigmund Durante Lochead

                                   Lia   Brown
                                      Fred
              Bertos                                        Ifill
                                    Greenacre

could also see it pan out as a 4411? Although we do like Ifill central, so it may be Brown or Lia getting the cut for me unfortunately

While I hate to say it, I think it gives Bertos/Daniel a higher chance to rotate/rest between games, depending on form.

On current form, I'd keep Daniel, drop Bertos. On early round form, it would be the reverse.

Players do need a rest, it just sucks the A-League plays with a 4-man bench.

Well Fred isn't hopeless in the tackle, he doesn't have to play as an out-and-out attacking midfielder to be effective does he? Surely we can have a holding mid and Fred more as a CM with a license to get forward from time to time.

Good point.

Sort of like a Tim Brown but with more creativity

Would love to see Fred back, but as marquee, not too sure, Fred or Ifill for me, like a few other people on here I have read.

Personally, I think game time for the players is key, they are a fantastic bunch of chaps, and I am disappointed that some of them are not getting game time that they need.

Almost certainly not. The FFA are not inclined to find an acandemy for NZ players.

The hope would be a reserve side in the NZFC, but as the future of that is up in the air there is nothing yet confirmed for the Phoenix squad members.

This for me. It will be one of Lia, Brown, Daniel and Leo who drop out depending on how defensive/attacking Ricki wants to play. Without a second starting striker, perhaps it would be best to keep all three of Daniel, Bertos and Ifill, and deploy Fred alongside Lia/Brown, as Lemon said.

currently I'd keep daniel in at Leo's expense. Daniel is looking a better player this season and Leo's game has been getting worse as the weeks go by

According to the media he is keen to return down under, and I'd expect some other clubs will be keen to talk to him as well.

Shortage of other clubs with marquee spaces though plus Adelaide are one but propped up by the FFA so they are out you would think.

Mariners the only side without a marquee other than Adelaide ?

Add to that the commentators on Sunday said Nix management had suggested to them he would be here by the end of the week

And I can't really see CCM paying big bucks for a foreign player

I thought Elrich was their marquee, besides, they have McGlinchey.

Only we were dumb enough to have Elrich as a marquee.

And no idea why they wouldn't get a foreign marquee (CCM that is).

Just doesn't suit CCM at all. They would go for a big/medium-name aussie player like Aloisi first.

And they already have McGlinchey and Travis playing pretty well in that position do they not ?

thats the way I was thinking too. Although, he might be able to fit under the cap now, seeing as he pretty much wont be taken up over in the US I think.  But offer him marquee dollars and hope we can squeeze him in next season? Surely he cant be worth too much.
I watched the highlights of the last game he was in, he went from hero winning a penalty, to villan by getting a Red and giving away a penalty.

Fred rejects Wellington to stay in MLS with DC United

04.11.09 | tribalfootball.com

READ MORE NEWS ON: Melbourne Victory, North Queensland Fury, Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne Victory
Brazilian playmaker Fred has rejected claims he was close to signing with Wellington Phoenix.

Fred is still contracted to American powerhouse DC United for another season but the main reason he will remain is to gain his green card visa for the United States.

Contrary to reports that Fred was close to signing with Wellington, Freds representatives have alerted tribalfootball.com that Fred had not agreed to come to play again for the team he had a short stint with in 2008.

Fred made a huge impact in Australia with the Melbourne Victory in their inaugural Championship team of 2006/07.

It is believed that North Queensland Fury had also been in negotiations with Freds representatives in recent months.

"Freds representatives have alerted tribalfootball.com" and  "To get his green card" makes it sound a bit made-up to me, especially since I thought it was the club's choice to keep him an extra year if they wanted. Critical_Lemon2009-11-04 23:55:45

According to the ABC Fred is already playing for the Phoenix.  Check out this line in last night's match report:

Kennedy was to blame for Wellington's first goal with a poor effort to block a Barbarouses strike, and his loose parry fell straight to Brown who produced the tap-in.

There was little he could do about the last goal though, with Ifill neatly taking possession neatly of a lovely pass from former Victory playmaker Fred before nestling the ball in the bottom-right corner.

I spoke to Tony Pignata yesterday and he said signing Fred was "fefty-fefty".

Man I feel cool saying I spoke to him, I more bellowed at him before the game and he wandered over for a yarn.  Top bloke.

Hmm, that story is a bit worrying. The Fred rejection one that is.

Honestly, I don't think we *need* Fred - he'd just be bloody nice to have in the team. So wont be too worried either way.

Well, last night he wasn't needed, but like I said earlier on this thread, injuries and suspensions are inevitiable.

If, god forbid, Ifill got injured, then the creativity levels would plummet. But, if Fred was around, we'd still be pretty sweet.

Still can't see where he would immediately slot in if he were to come. It would be pretty harsh to bench Daniel and playing him instead of Brown would probably be a little too attack minded (and I don't think Ricki would want to bench the All Whites VC)

Don't fret Steve-O.  Tribalfootball is less reliable than Michael Ferrante with an open net.

I think Fred would be an awesome signing, and I would love it if he came. But at the same time, I won't be completely gutted if he didn't come. But, would give some positive headaches for RH for sure if he did come.

The current attack is still too one-dimensional, a central playmaker of Fred's quality would be the change from a good A-League team to an absolutely splendid one, right across the park.

Expectations would be pretty high for Fred if he were to come.

Our attack is improving, we have been creating chances all year, been just lacking the finishes touches. They have come twice in the past three games, and I hope it's a sign of things to come.

I'm not really phased if he does not come, we're playing like one of the better sides in the A-League right now.

Still haven't heard where we would put him and how he would fit in properly.

yeah i dont know if he would fit in? But I do agree, that if wse lost Ifill, we would be a lot less dangerous. Think the team is quality at the moment. We lost to top of the table, but thats fine with me if we can beat 80% of the  league.
