If we do get Fred to play for us - who will miss out? where will he play? do we need him?

Thoughts??

I would imagine that Diego or Mulligan would be dropped from the 23 and that either Brown or Lia would become bench warmers.

And yes we do need him.  With him being creative in the midfield, you would find that either Daniel or Ifil would support Greenacre more creating more attacking chances for him/them.

Reading the DC United forums -  they all seem to want him gone.. -

"I can't say I will miss Fred. I would have liked to have liked him. But he really was sub-mediocre during his tenure. Perhaps he was played out of position, compared to where he starred in Australia. Perhaps Australia just ain't any good. I don't know. But I know that Fred was generally pretty lousy for us."

"I would add
... this year.

I did not like (AT ALL!) him being loaned out in the off-season. I thought he was getting tired and needed some rest in the off-season. During his loan period, he was faced with his mother dying and had to abandon his loaned-to team. Then he had to come back here and get into pre-season traininig, then other crap happened with his daughter that was troubling ... etc. I think it was too much of a mental strain following too much of a physical strain. Then to be thrown in and out of constantly changing formations and line-ups and competitions for injuries and performance, and "managed minutes", I think it all just came unraveled.
Maybe some time to relax and reflect (and rehab what I think was a pulled groin in the last game), and an incentive-laden contract is all he needs to be dangerous again next year.
The year before last he showed promise on a team that publicly did not get along, I think he has some use. "

Quite interesting, really, considering how he has played in the A-League. I do wonder how his mother dying has effected him - really sad story.

Anyway, would love to see him here. Not sure how he would fit into our current line up though. Imagine Ifill, Fred and Daniel playing together...mouth watering.

Dump Mulligan for cap reasons (as Diego has two years)

2 points here....

You can't dump someone like Mulligan mid-season to fit the cap, wouldn't he still come under the cap? I thought the cap still counted if a player was dumped but still under contract.

Also Fred would be a guest player - cap doesn't count

Yes, what ever you pay the player out would count against the cap.  Also, no guarantee Mulligan would agree to go, or that we'd want him gone.

That article says marquee... talking about him signing now for the rest of this seaon and next season.

Anyone think that Melbourne Heart might try and get him as well?

Possible....coz Fred said he enjoyed his time in Melbourne.

Real surprised the club has been so public about the dealings.....I would have thought that after what happened with Porter they would keep their heads down, do the negotiations on the quiet and then say "Freds signed....or Freds not signed".
Why give anyone else a sniff....plus if the player is being chased by more than one club they can up the anty for wages etc.

Yeah, I thought it was a little weird too but I suppose it's just more good publicity for the club. Unless, of course, there are already other clubs chasing him so it doesn't make any difference. valeo2009-10-28 14:54:54

M'bad, I wasn't clear.

What I meant was that if you dumped Mulligan, only the remaining season would count against the cap. Diego has two seasons on his contract so buying out his contract would have a bigger impact on the cap. IIRC. Which I probably don't

Fred is a good player, but I would like to see him signed as a guest first if possible and see how he fits into the team structure i.e who does he replace (Bertos, Daniel, Lia, Brown?), does he disrupt the balance of the team, how is his defensive work rate? etc. He only played 3 games for us, one was a great win over Melbourne and another was a huge defeat to Adelaide (6-1!).

Marquee $ is a big commitment, it would be prudent to try before you buy and 9 games is a good length. Could even put a clause that if we are happy we will extend guest period to marquee if it is going well. If it is not going well, Fred would have a guest stint and some $ in a period when he could possibly not be playing or earning and be free for a new club next season and we have saved $ and a marquee sport for next season.

What? are you kidding?
The post I commented on suggested he'd take up some of the cap and also that cutting Mulligan would release money from the cap which isn't true.

Are you qualified for numptiness??????

You've just wasted 15 seconds of my life which I'll never get back

Read the article:

Wellington Phoenix will make a serious play to lure Brazilian midfielder, Fred, to Westpac Stadium as the A-League club's permanent marquee player.

If we only offer him a guest spot when he is looking for something more permanent I guarantee Melbourne Heart will swoop in and sign him. We already know what he can offer.

Everyone is under the cap, because the only player not under the cap is the marquee player, and we ain't got one.

So no secret marquee? Personally I can't see us dropping Lia/Brown for Fred. Perhaps Daniel? Based on form at the moment (Last 2-3 games) Bertos is the least performing midfielder so...wellyphoenixfan2009-10-28 18:25:36

Yeah on form, I would drop Bertos.
But by structure i would have to drop Brown
So on form/structure it would be Lia.
Just because Brown has played better.

But we should always welcome better players into the club, and then it is the players job to step it up or be cut

PWF it could be a HUGE risk dropping a DM for a AM.

1 stat about I want to be banned - earned 40k (GBP) per week for sitting on his arse for 2 years near enough.

As for Fred, IMO he is better than every other midfielder we have, therefore it's a no-brainer that we 'need' him. It would be a bit of a (pleasant) headache for Ricki as to where he would slot in after a performance like Sunday, but I think we all know that won't always be the case, and there are still possible injuries and suspensions that will crop up as the season goes on.

Mr Ferrante would be further down the pecking order and that's a good thing in itself.

Disagree. Firstly, Ferrante imo is a largely under-rated player. Sure he had a few poor games this season but if you can remember back to the end of season 1 and season 2 he was probably one of our best players. Secondly, sure Fred is good, but we've already got good a very good bunch of midfielders + attacking players coming off the bench. It would also probably mean less game time for Nz midfielders that we all love seeing do well + Coasta and Rojas. I just really cant see why we need him......

I don't think they could get any less game time could they?

You've also missed the point about injuries and suspensions. It's in our interests to have strength in depth - Ferrante does not provide this IMO, at all.

I wasn't here for season 1, but I can't remember ever doing anything good last season, and he has been woeful this season.

Fred could probably replace the slightly jaded Leo Bertos right now, no problems.

Please see the words 'slightly jaded' and 'right now'...

Not a permanent replacement by any means.

Our starting 11 and reserves are class but after that we don't have too much to offer, having someone like Fred would add a lot more depth to the squad. Not good news for Caceres though, thought he looked good when he came on on the weekend.

The more the merrier! Can never have too much quality.

Injuries and suspensions are inevitable, we've been relatively lucky so far.
