Yeah, I saw that. Bit strange. I guess they meant the All Whites in the Nix team? No idea

Anyone know what Troy's goal was like?

I caught it on the news, but it hasn't stuck.  Edge of the area, maybe a good run and ball put cross to him from Ruande ?

Don't quote me on that.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

pretty happy that we drew and apparently dominated. Would like to see the goal but doubtful.

good to see that some of the triallists are seen as worth signing

after last year I'll be taking pre-season with a pinch, or two, of salt; but good to see that we did ok with a few out

Well done lads, great result - especially with about half the squad unavailable and up against the champions.

I thought that we were going to get humped!

Bit of a relief seeing this result after earlier news reports re players out through injury/sickness.Whew! Well done.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

How did Joachim Rande play? Would be attacking mid field role. He's been in the Nelson College 1st XI the last 3-4 years (from Solomon Isl on scholarship). Quality player. Very fast and one helluva strike. To think that my 15 year old bro was playing alongside him last year, putting him into gaps, is pretty awesome!

Here's the second half of TV3 news which is where I think you'll find the Nix story.

Driving me nuts with buffering delays and what look like embedded commercials so haven't watched it yet.

If someone can just pull out the story and goals and post it on YouTube that would be great.

A few questions:

Has he ever played for his home country at top level?  (Solomons).

If not, has he been in NZ (Nelson College, etc) long enough to qualify for the AWs if he's good enough?

Has he been signed by the Nix?

I think he's only seventeen and apparently been here for a few years so doubt he's played for the solomons. I think the bigger question is if we can sign him up and if we can, can we get him as a kiwi

I think he is in his early 20s. Yea I'm pretty sure he's played top level football for the Solomons.
He has been in NZ for the last 3-4 years. Last I heard he was trialing for one of the NZFC teams or lower tier teams up north- he hasn't really kept in touch with the coaches from college since he left.

At this stage I presume it was a trial. I'm not sure if he is Nix potential though.

He's definitely older than that!

Crowd was low but the locals who did show got behind the team - I'll take "yuss!" and "oooh"'s over nothing anytime.

YF's contingent consisted of me and my broken megaphone, Bevan and his polar bear hat, Cam from Dunedin (who forgot his YF username). Not enough to do any chanting. Weather was much colder than the day before and the morning was overcast so that didn't help boost numbers. Clouds cleared up closer to the game.

Mulligan was better than terrible but I remain to be convinced. Was close to a 2-1 win for us with a missed opportunity in the second half, but a patched-together Phoenix drawing 1-1 against a strong Melbourne team, I'm not disappointed. Troy MOTM, with Rojas showing some good promise too.

Got a lot of compliments from fans at the game and post-match function. A few told me that the Phoenix are the best supported team in any code in this country. I was interviewed for the ODT again, but my comment don't appear to have made the paper this time

Former Bay United franchise head coach Jonathan Gould perhaps has to take some credit for that. The former Scottish international goalkeeper, before heading off to serve as assistant coach at the Wellington Phoenix franchise in the A-League competition from August, sang Rande's praises and projected he could go on to play on much bigger stages if he kept his head out of the clouds.

Gould need not worry. When SportToday approached Honiara-born Rande, the reticent 19-year-old's unassuming Pacific Island background suggested anything but.

As with most Solomon Islanders that age can be a bit of a guess though.

Mulligan - Muscat - Seamonster - Lia
McKain, Ferrante, Daniel and Diego (didn't note positions)
Hearfield - Costa

Subs - Crowther, Scott, Rojas, Solomon Islands bloke

Nelson College are average compared to other colleges around the country at football, based on that I don't understand why this guy was playing? surely theres much better talent around even for a one off game against the Victory. I re call another College from Nelson, Nayland College who had Joses Nawo a secondary school nationals MVP a year or two ago and has always had many NZ age grade reps,  why not one of them?
