Getting Bigger Crowds

So far we haven't seen an increase in crowds.

I thought that after the excitment of the first home game we would get at least 15,000 again, but the crowd figure dropped a little.

Coming off our first win, and with a nice calm night, I thought 15,000 was achievable again.

12,000 isn't a bad crowd, in fact it is pretty good really, but what are people's thoughts about the likelyhood of our crowds increasing as the season progresses?

Are we sort of locked into that 10,000-14,000 range, or can we get more against Perth this Sunday?

since the Phoenix declared that a 10,000 crowd was break-even then anything above that will keep the game in Wellington.
I'd love to see the stadium full for a football match and hopefully that's going to be achieved when the Beckham show comes to town.

i would think a nice sunny day on sunday will bring in 15 000 but who knows. should be at least 12000

I think sunday the crowd will be simmilar 12-14, its up to us as the fans to help grow it. Send emails round your work talk to your friends bring new people along. Infect them with the fever. A win will prob be the quickest way to  get a big crowd increase at the moment though.

im personally finding it pretty hard to get people to show up becaus emost people i know are rugby mad, i got a few to come and they have all admitted that the soccer is better than the rugby, bu t i think the rugby nuts are getting scared/protective of there precious game, hence not showing up to support a far better sport!!!! Is anyone else finding these rugby folk particurly hard to deal with?

yeh , the two sunday late arvo kick offs , should bring in more families, espicially since they are in daylight saving time

the three consecutive home games that fall round the Beks show should be interesting for crowd numbers

Remember that it'll be really 4pm next weekend because of daylight savings so its gonna be nice and sunny weather permitting

5pm on a Sunday is a strange time, for out of towners it makes things difficult especially for those with kids. School hols and daylight saving should mean more families get along. The pure rugby heads at my work have all been along to a game, all loved it  but none of them have gone back. None of them them can give a sensible reason. Personally  I'm both a rugby and a football head (I have season tickets for both) and there is no argument which one has given me better value, having been to see all Phoenix games and two Lions games. Skill level and atmosphere at Phoenix both way above what NPC offers.

as long as the crowd numbers increase slightly each time, that'll be sweet. There ain't gonna be a 5000 people increase one week from the previous week, sorry but it's true...but there there might be 500-1000, and that's stilll really good

Saturday's game probably wasn't helped by the Wearable Arts being on last weekend as well, as the WOW show on Saturday clashed with the game, and those tickets for WOW purchased back in February.

If crowd sizes are to increases in large jumps, then the nix will need to start winning at home. Simple as that really.

My gut feeling says a hardcore of 7-8k, until next year, when it will rise to 20k [average]. If the AB's don't bring back the world cup, this could increase to 25k next year

i was actually thinking, will the ABs winning the cup make such a big difference to the Phoenix? i mean, they are totally expected to win anyway

Looking on the official A-league website for crowd sizes it appears Melbourne are able to attract around 30,000 to their games.  Queensland and Sydney can get around the 15,000 to 20,000 mark.  Newcastle, Adelaide and Wellington are in the 11,000 to 15,000 range, while Central Coast and Perth are getting crowds of around 8000 or 9000.  I think the Phoenix will be unlikely to get crowds in the 15,000 to 20,000 range given the size of the city and the continued popularity of rugby in this country.  I'd like to be proved wrong but as the figures above show much bigger cities than ours struggle to attract such crowds.

Anyway I'll be there at the Perth game and bringing four others, three of them for their first Phoenix match.  Sharing the love!

I'd like to think we have a hardcore 10,000 now and that anything over that is good. The word is spreading. Did you notice not all the singing was from Aisle 21 ? The singing is spreading, Aisle 22 & 23 joining in a lot more. I think that fun factor will also be passed on through word of mouth. The fans in the stands seem quite passionate about this team and this too will help spread the word. There were a heap of out-of-towners at this game. Awesome to see people travelling from Hawkes Bay, Tauranga etc. No other team was supported this way as such for a club game anyway.

I think the crowd will slowly increase. The footie style the team are trying to play is more the most part attractive and attacking. It's when it switches to "hoof ball" that fans may get put off.

Have faith, we will get the crowds and hopefully the results.

Winning in front of your home crowd may help a bit!!

Give it mix of nice weather and a home win or two and we might get to 15K

If it's more than that for any game this year (except the LA Galaxy) I'll be very pleasantly surprised.........

Stay positive, we WILL get there, although it might take a bit of time. 3- 0 against Perth will make everybody sit up. Weather doesn't matter, as Phoenix supporters are NOT flaky

3-0 to Perth would make everyone sit up for sure.  I think selling good coffee is the secret, and prawn sandwiches.

Aren't football and WOW mutually exclusive?

Hi Cantona, 3-0 to the Phoenix, NEVER to Perth - my apologies for any confusion before

I think it will be a combination of a lot of factors, most mentioned on this thread...

1) There is so much sport going on at the moment, once the league, rugby season (world cup and NPC), cricket and other events such as WOW finsh up I think this will help come November/December when the main competition will be the A-League

2) Daylight savings and summer kicking in. With more light and warmer temperatures approaching that too will help attract the crowds.

3) A home win! Lets hope we get one this sunday vs Perth. I got a mate coming over from Perth and a mate comin down from Napier for this one so the interest is there and its spreading.

4) Attractive footy - good to see we are not detracting from playing good attacking footy. The results will come and we r starting to see that already.

I was drinking in Arizona after the nix game and a whole lot of WOW attendees came in for a roadie. I would say none of them would even have known the nix were playing let alone contemplated going. An idea to build numbers might be to stop live TV coverage of the game in Wgtn, like they do in Oz for various fixtures

I can, and I hate the crappy greasy food and foul coffee at the stadium.  A decent latte, with some good food, would make aisle 28 a much more pleasant place.

One of the keys is season ticket holder numbers.
The more there are, the more they infect everyone else's behaviour.

Also sunny days aren't always popular, because people go away/head off to the beach or get berated into finishing off that painting job.

Still, win lose or draw we're Phoenix.  Just remember that for when the weather is foul.

Okay, a chicken mayo sandwich then, or a tuna roll?  Aisle 28 only.  In the Fever Zone eating is considered to be cheating...

I believe that FOOTBALL at the Stadium has become the catalyst for this 'new' generation of the greatest game on the planet. Unlike other countries, we are sill in our infancy, and although the honeymoon is over, it is the LIVE atmosphere, plus the attacking game and SCORING great goals that will drive Wellington's point even harder, as to how to best support both a local club, and through this great forum, a NATIONAL effort - onwards & upwards rastus2007-09-24 16:35:53

Once the NPC finishes, the crowds may pick up. No cricket at home this summer I think, no rugby, no basketball, league or netball so what else are they going to watch in Wellington?

Helpful hint number 1 regarding food.

After leaving the backbencher or other drinking establishments, if you're hungry, stop at the Hot Dog stand at the Welllington Railway Station and order the $4.00 everything Dog. Eating one will tie you over till after you leave the stadium. It has flavour in the form of a real sausage, tomatoe sauce, onions, cheese & mustard. I've eaten them and I've never suffered from any ill effects afterwards. It might not be healthy food but it's hot, freshly made and filling and only $4.00!

Helpful hint number 2 regarding food.

The food at the stadium is even more bland / flavourless than a MacDonalds, usually cold (Except the pies) and should carry a Health Warning. It's also expensive. I understand ESR have tested their alleged 'hamburgers" and alleged 'hot dogs' and they have discovered several new elements in them that previous were not found in the periodic table leading them to believe they may have elements previously left behind in a comet tail passing close by the earth some 20,000 years ago!

YF BBQ was brilliant as was the ease of getting your last couple of beers in before heading to the stadium.
