Ok,i wasnt going to post this, but believe me the players are frustrated also.

Hearfield randomly sat next to me in town the other day (before the TW match) with his Dad (i think). He was an angry man. Mostly about a lack of gametime and frustration that we're not winning. He also took a phonecall which saw him raise his voice into the phone, and he wasnt too polite or happy about RH,and i got the impression a lot of the others who arent playing feel the same. Althogh this would seem normal in any team, especially one with no reserve side,he can only put 11 out on the pitch at a time after all.

He did cite a conversation with riki that was interesting and has relevance to the conflicted views people are having on this forum recently.

It went something like this:

*Hearfield approaches riki about recent form etc*
Riki: "well we are creating chances and playing well, what do you want me to do? change that?"
Hearfields answer was basically: "well we arent winning,so you should play me. Waa waa whine whine"

yes,i was eavesdropping (you all so would too ). I was too far away to hear details perfectly,so i wont go into anymore detail than that, that just seemed to be the jist of the conversation. Anything more i would say may be out of context (even this).

Interesting, as Troy is getting more game time than some of his team mates and can consider himself part of the first 15 matchday squad.

Just as well it wasn't Mulligan that sat beside you

Yeah i felt like piping up with something in that regard and adding "and when you do come on you do sh*t all anyway" but figured id better not as he really was angry. Even his dad or whoever said "boy did you get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning"

He seems to have an ego about him thats for sure...

Seems fair enough - you'd be more concerned if he wasn't bothered about playing wouldn't you?

Not having any sort of reserve or youth team really is a bit of a nightmare though - does anyone know if we are trying to organise friendlies or anything to get these guys playing some matches?

Yeah definetly fair enough,it was just the general tone of the conversation and some things he said, were a bit worrying. Hes very unsettled, and i got the impression the non-playing squad are too. The squad seems to be a split one, playing and non-playing,with each groups attitudes to the other not being so good. But again, maybe out of context so ill shutup

Id imagine organising meaningful games is a bit difficult, they had TW on tuesday, but any lower than that theyd have to weigh up having a game vs benefit of training with the team. A kick around with Upper hutt first team isnt exactly going to do them much good is it? Riki would rather them train. (no offence, more pointing out the lack of benefit of a pro team playing a lower club side vs training).

Match fitness can only truly really be gained by playing sides of a similar level to you. Dont think TW would be keen to play the phoenix every week, and even if they did itd get tiresome. But then the non-playing group would see games as the only way to press a claim for a starting spot,id imagine theyd be feeling a bit helpless at the moment.

I just looked at it now.

Fair enough - is that the first one of the season?

2 goals for Costa eh...but will it make a difference and even get him a spot on the bench?

You make a good point. Remembering back to immediately after the NQF game, there were calls that the players, didn't care, because they were getting paid, they would be alright. I think that is going well overboard. They players care about winning, on par if not more than they most diehard fans. Did you see Durante, when that goal went in.

I think it is fair enough that Hairfeild is a little angry. I wouldn't have him in my starting line up, but he is a good player. We could go on with the fact that not having a reserve team is killing us, but i think that has been discussed into the ground before.

It is a tough one, as the team is playing well, but yes not winning. So do you change a non-winning formula or stick witha team that has been performing? (Bar results)

And after all that... I don't know.

All Aboard the Phoenix/ All Whites Bandwagon!!

yeah it really was an intersting insight to the teams different views about what us fans are talking about every week on these forums.

Obviously those who are playing (and the coach) feel they are playing well and are just unlucky and results will come so no need to change things up. While the non-playing lot are itching to have their go,and see the lack of results as claim to have their go in the side.

But he definetly did care. its just whether he cared about the team,or just wanted to play for his own purposes. Either way, theres a healthy competition for places in the team, and its good that each player believes they can step in and make a difference.

Another good reason with a squad of 23 and only 15 getting stripped for each match, to go to at least a 5 man subs bench if not the 7.  It is a way for the coach to give all of his squad a chance of playing on a match day, or at least keep them feeling like they are involved.

Offset that against the travel/hotel costs for an extra 3 players maybe it doesn't work out of course...
