Beckham set to play in Wellington

Football superstar David Beckham and his club LA Galaxy are set to play the Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on December 2.

Beckham is likely to be accompanied by his pop star wife Victoria, who is keen to visit New Zealand, although it is not known whether they will bring their children, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Plans for the Wellington game were "at an advanced stage" and were likely to be confirmed next week, Sydney-based Fifa agent Lou Sticca said yesterday.

The team is expected to arrive in Wellington on November 29, two days after playing Sydney FC at Telstra Stadium.

The interest in that game, still three months away, is huge, with an estimated 70,000 tickets and 70 per cent of corporate packages already sold.

Tickets have been pitched at a user-friendly price of between $30 and $80 and it appears they will be much the same for the game in New Zealand.

The matches are contingent on Beckham playing. If he does not appear, they will be postponed.

"Absolutely, Beckham has to play," said Sticca. "It's part of the arrangement for both games.

"The Wellington Phoenix as a club are very keen to have Galaxy play there. The game fits in well with their A-League schedule, with a Sunday game being ideal.

"In my discussions with (Phoenix owner) Terry Serepisos and (chief executive) Tony Pignata, they have always been interested in taking a game.

Sticca said the Galaxy would be good for Wellington, arriving in town three days before the game.

"As well as Beckham they have other stars including team captain, and sometimes US captain, Landon Donovan and Portuguese international Abel Xavier on their roster."

another reason why I bought a season ticket - hopefully we'll get preferential booking for these one-off events

You might get to see plastic, using plastic to buy plastic. Beckham is good but that accessory he has leaves me wanting to give her a big feed so she can stop looking so anorexic.

These days with all the live footie, you're used to seeing him. I think it owuld have been better to have brought a big club here for a friendly. Celtic comes to mind or Everton but the Galaxy are just a 2 player team with Donovan & Becks.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

agree Lg, I'd rather see a real club (Hull City = a crowd of 10 or Liverpool !!!!),

but as a media hype up and to get non-football fans to the ground it's a pretty canny move

right now though there's only one game on my mind

far out - 36,000 for a football game in WELLINGTON

 - getting Man Utd to tag on a visit to NZ after their China tour would have been brilliant, but if Beckham gets 36,000 people thru the turnstiles, it'll do for me ...

I think if it is successful, that there is a good chance that the likes of ManU will come out and play in their preseason tours, if they take in a game in Aussie. The Phoenix would be a good opponent for them, or other EPL leagues on tour. It has become big business in the US, and the A League is modeling itself somewhat on the MSL.

I agree with you Lonegunmen, That Victoria Beckham looks more like a skeleton every time I see her!  We'll have to take and feed her up on good Kiwi tucker!  If Becks brings a $36000 crowd to The Ring Of Fire I won't be complaining.  Hopefully season membership folks will get preferential booking rights and discounts too!
