IRD had a bit of a crackdown/warning on behaviour associated with this kind of thing (not exactly this because it's commonly accepted that you shouldn't do it but some found other weird and wonderful ways to try it on) and there was a bit of a public outcry over picking on charities.

Be good if they could somehow work out a system where you couldn't claim on the value of the actual goods (ie. first $100 or however much the equivalent jersey would cost) but then could claim on the additional cash you paid, effectively, to charity.
Might still be too vague that people could exploit it but surely if you can prove a goods retail value then the extra amount you paid would still be charity, would it not?
"Collectors items" have vague monetary value to me.
