A bit early yet I know, but I'm interested in your best guesses as to what formation Herbert will adopt, and how the players will be slotted into it.
Given that we usually (?) play 4-3-3 with the AWs, can we
assume more of the same for the Phoenix, or will he play a
different formation?
Given that I've been out of Australiasia for years, I really
have no idea of how different teams line up, and what Herbert did
with the Knights at the end of last year.
Looking at the signings today, are we looking at something
like this:
Paston
??
??
??
??
Brown Alosi/Johnson
Ferrante
??
??
??
It could be interesting to see how our ideas change as
signings are announced.
it will be interesting...
four of the 5 signings are effectively centre midfielders,
ferrante can play wide too though and aloisi started played a lot
of his early footy as a very classy sweeper - not the defensive
type either, was a deep play maker.
he's probably a little slow for sweeper now, so there could be
a case for 433:
paston - x, x, x, x - brown, aloisi, johnson - ferrante, x,
x
at least we have a few pointers now!
bring on the next batch!
If we have signed four midfeilders alrady we will probably play
more than 3 of them I will say 2-4-4

hi, lets hope they get Neil Emblen and the Canadian striker (name
escapes me- mental block!) as they were on fire late last season
How do you fit 4 central midfielders into a 4-4-2? Or do you
see Brown and Ferrante playing out wide?
I reckon we'll go 4-5-1 with 2 holding mids (from
Johnson/Brown/Aloisi), two wider players who can drop back in
defence and bomb forward when we're in possesion and then a
creative player in the hole behind the striker. This formation will
easily switch to 4-2-4 when on attack.

That would be the only negative is we have signed 4 central
midfeilders that are similar in terms there is no pace amongst
them.
ferrante ain't no slouch. i think you'll be surprised how
good he is
Brown will definitely play down the middle, presumably holding - but not out right i doubt
I am not saying Ferrante is slow I was meaning they are all central
midfeild and there is no lightening pace there. I am really hoping
we get some out and out speed merchants in the form of wingers and
a striker as there would be nothing worse than us getting out hopes
up to yet again be a team of mostly slower players across the
board.
Its early days yet I ws just pointing out they are similar
players due to their favoured position the play.
The lightning pace will come from imports is my theory. This
Brazilian Midfielder and maybe a winger and a striker would be
where Ricki is looking I imagine.
Oh, and Costa.

3-5-2 is the only way to play. Boss the middle of the park and you
are way.
Only if you have the right defenders... as Ricki last tried this
with Old, Hay and Bunce... I say no...
i think it's a good option.
remember lads, it's just 5 players. the squad will be
23, so it's perfectly possible that only 2 of the 4 midfielders
signed today will line up.
Ther is a great trend amonst world football at the moment to play 4
at the back with the two fullbacks getting up and down the flanks
and effectively working as "wing-backs" playing the same role they
would with a back 5. 2 central midfielders sit in front of this
defence shielding the defence and starting the attack. 1 play maker
or (number 10) usually the star attraction sit in front of the 2
central mid's. u then have 2 wide strikers (usually quick) who play
the striker's role in attack but do the hard work in defence and
try and gain posession high up the pitch and put the pressure on.
That leaves 1 person left: the target man up front. Usually
porwerful striker with back to goal, creating space for wide
strikers.
call the formation 4-3-3, a 4-2-4, a 4-5-1, ur seeing it used
by teams like Man U, Barca,
Netherlands, Socceroos (under Hiddink), Melbourne Vic,
Newcastle Jets. Works well with the way the game is being played
today.
Im not nessacerily saying the Pheonix should adopt this
formation, There are many other effective formations, but it is
something to consider.
Ur thoughts?

With the right players it is a good formation - solid at the
back , and hard to break down, and with the overlapping fullbacks
there can be plenty of attacks from the flanks. Sometimes I
think the lone man up front gets isolated though. I guess if
you are on top, the wingers and the attacking midfielder can cause
lots of problems. If the other team is on top you've got a
striker stuck up front with no support.
If we've got pace, the ability to beat the man and crossing
ability on the flanks, the right target man and attacking
midfielder, then why not. It looks like we've already got the
two CM in place.
