I just got back from a Lions game and OMFG it was dull. It was a free bee from a supplier of mine and free booze got me along.

It was soooooo quiet all game long. The closest thing to real cheering was a bunch of school girls cheering for the 'Naki.
Why cant rugby fans sit together and cheer in unison. All we got was  oooooohhhh, aaaahhhh or yyyaaaaaaayyyy. LAME is all I can say. I tried to talk to some pissed ruggers guys and tell them to get along to a 'Nix game to experience REAL atmosphere.
Maybe it worked. Who knows, I'm a bit pissed too

Come on the 'Nix

rugby is a very different sport from a spectator point of view.....there is not a lot of cheering going on throughout the match unless a try is scored.....they do say that it is the upperclass game....maybe that is where it stems from?

I frequently go to watch rugby matches with my picnic basket fillet with cavier, asparagus & goat cheese vol a vents, and like to wash it down with several glasses of moet.....afterwards I enjoy a couple of rounds of polo

The precise term is that it's an upper class twits game.

Problem is - rugby never has draws, and there is almost always tries scored so crowds just sit there and wait for it to happen.  In football we know that there could be a 0-0 draw and we still want to have fun so we chant and cheer on the team.  Who knows, it could turn a draw into a win...

You could say that rugby fans expect to be entertained, whereas football fans have learned to bring their own entertainment.

Football is far more exciting of course, but it hasn't always been end-to-end stuff, and crowds have always been lively.

I find football exciting..

Better than waiting 10 minutes for a scrum to pack down, and getting told to shutup if you even begin to make some sort of noise.

Allegedly

Game was rather dull after we took the lead...these Lions tryfests we've been getting are great, but boring. Made me wish it were football!

Yawn !zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If rugby is so boring why do u bother going? So u can bitch about it on here! C'mon guys rugby is fantastic (im biased i admit it) when its played like it was in the second half by Wellington you pay to see it. But like football it can worth watching as well. I'd pay to watch the style the Phoenix have brought to Wellington (not that of the Kingz or Knights). So instead of sh*tting on rugby why not stick to promoting the wonderful Phoenix.

I have to admit that I watched the second half last night (slow night on telly) but I was amazed to hear the commentators put in a plug for the Phoenix!

Maybe even the rugby commentators are getting the fever.

I feel so dirty, I'll go and have a shower and stand in the corner too....

I do agree, my only complaints is because of the lack of atmosphere. it should have been going off with the amount of people. wellington rugby need to sort something out and get the crowds going - although it does seem they are trying hard. but regardless, good game. even better one this weekend im hoping. :)

Well said HN. Some of the best times I've had were watching the Kingz under the Rufers. Good crowds, Bloc in full voice. Fat guy with the monster banner, Irish Ejit and the banter. Ultra and "twist and shout". Sigh.

It all turned to Sh*te when Sky came on board, and turned to custard under the Fat Controller.

The reason they cant group them all together like the Phioenix games is bercause most of them have season passes for the Super 14 and Ab games. Thee would be uproar if they were asked to move to a different seat for the lions games!!! PVFC2007-09-21 11:46:53

I think he meant that the fans should want to sit together anyway - regardless of where their season seats are!

A girl I work with says she goes to rugby games "for the atmosphere". She keeps promising she'll check out a Phoenix game. When she finally does, I think it's gonna change her views on what atmosphere means.

i think rugby needs to change the way it's played a bit.

Maybe make it so they cant use their hands, change the shape of the goal and the ball, and reduce the number of thugs er I mean players.

Agreed, Football is a game where the crowd can have a REAL impact on the team. You see upsets in football all the time (Chelsea vs Rosenborg anyone?) whereas you never see them in egg chasing...

Rugby is all about mindless instant gratification.  Meanwhile football builds up to moments of far greater pleasure...

Yes I did watch the Kingz and maybe the Rufers tried to play attacking football but I suspect they didnt have the players to implement it.

Last Friday Week I was in Napier and went to the Magpies V Northland match, it too was dead crod wise except for 20 seconds after each time the bay scored.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
