I had a dream

Am I imagining this? is this really happening? Am I dreaming?

Tomorrrow I am off to watch my beloved Phoenix play in front of a capacity 34,500 crowd in an A-League finals game. How amazing is that?

It hardly seems like 2 and a half years ago when on a cold winters day we turned up at the ROF to see the first match. We turned up with hope in our hearts. Most of us had modest hopes. Hopes that the Phoenix would not disgrace themselves. Hopes that they might be better than the Knights/Kings. Hopes that maybe 5 or 6 thousand people might turn up to watch them and that they may generate a bit of positive media coverage for football.

Well that was then and this is now. Over 90,000 people have come to watch the Nix's last 4 home games. The city, the country are abuzz with football. The merchandise is selling like hotcakes. Football, the Phoenix has pushed other more established sports off the back pages of the sports papers. We are the medias darlings. People are now talking football...at work, in the pubs. Kids are going crazy for the game.

It would not have happen without some special people. People who kept the faith and had the strength and the conviction to make it work.

So a big thanks to first of all Terry....your vision has changed the football landscape for ever. To Rickie  for hanging in and proving what you are....a great coach. To the players for bonding together and producing the goods. To Tony P for his openness and cool profesionalism.

But most of all I salute you guys...the Yellow Fever. For the guys who thought this up and put in the hard yards to make it work...you are all as mad as cut snakes. To all the YF I salute your passion your humour and your wit. You have inriched the lives of many of us. Win or lose today it has been an amazing journey...and it is not over yet.

I've had dreams, weird ones. McKain re-signed long term (not weird) but at the Jets game half the stadium was empty.

I had a dream, that one day all Football clubs would be created equal, and that bin hammam would measure football clubs on there merits, not where they play.

I had a dream last night that 11,503 people turned up to the game tomorrow and the crowd cheered (real post).

Seems to be something wrong with his neck in that picture.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I had a dream we only had 12 or 13 people there cause of the weather. And the RoF looked different too, kind of like Athletic park    Oceanic62010-03-06 11:58:49

My dream last night =

Troy got the only goal from a short corner, for some reason their entire defence rushed out (some crazy offside trap routine) and the ball got slipped through for Troy to first-time it in from the right hand corner of the box.
Brilliant - if a little unlikely

I was just remembering today that the ticket I had for that game had THE BASIN printed on it because such a small crowd was anticipated for the first pre-season game... and Tomorrow the RoF will be sold out. Incredible.

Is it not true that game had to be moved because of the bad weather we had that week? seems like such a long time ago.

July 22nd 2007 - read about it here. Interesting to note that Sydney's Coach was a certain Mr B Culina.

I remember the "We're not Auckland any more" chant that day. I thought we were were onto something special right then.

I know, I know, its serious!

it was August, and for some reason the stadium was unavailable so the Basin was scheduled and yes tickets were printed for that. Then they decided the Basin that was too wet (it was a very wet winter) so, believe it or not, Newtown was discussed. Sensible heads realised that 6000 people do not fit into newtown, so someone banged a few heads together and all of a sudden the stadium was available.

Basin doesn't hold a lot of water, it doesn't have to be more wet than normal for it to get heavy. thus why it would have been a shambles. football should never be played at basin, though i know it has before.

edit: the unavailability of the stadium, i imagine, would have been due to the cost to hire it with an agreement being reached when they realised the basin wasn't fit for the game. my theory.TopLeft072010-03-06 14:05:02

I remember it clearly. sunday afternoon, the YF watering hole at the time (thistle) refused to open on the sunday, i put my 2 cents in and said the BB would be more than happy to host you, and the rest is history.

Maybe. I'd only been in Wellington a couple of months so my memory of the lead up to that game is all muddled :)

"I had a dream...."

Well, actually day dreaming...
Nix beat Jets, then Sydney.  Daniel scores the winning goal against Melb in the Grand Final.  Arrive back at Wgton Airport met by thousands of fans.  Ticker tape parade down Lambton Quay.  Reception in Civic Square with more thousands of fans chanting & singing Oh Wellington...!!!  Andrew Durante lifting up the trophy...crowd goes wild!!

Spot on, I was ball-boy for those first two pre-season games, and got to stand between the benches, I cleary remember Branko's swearing rages, the small but vocal Fever blowing me away from the other side and all of us thinking Cleberson was the greatest thing in the world at halftime.
You know we belong together...

I have a dream that one day the Phoenix will rise up and win  the major final  of the A-League: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that not all Jets are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the wet hills of Thorndon (?)  the sons of former Kingz and the sons of former Knights will be able to sit down together at a table of the FFA.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Australia, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justiceand give us our ucking Licence.

I have no dreams.

Anyone else having trouble sleeping and dreaming? My friend is snoring beside me but I got up from my broken rest to post this.

P.S. Yellow Fever is awesome. Thanks to the awesome Wellingtonian studying architectural drafting at Otago who flew up on the same flight as me. Your YF tee gave me the confidence to say hi to a complete stranger and chat about the game as we both waited for our luggage, and it was great talking football with you as we rode the Flyer into town. Thanks for pointing out the Lambton Quay bus stop, which, as you correctly pointed out, was right outside RYOS. Hope you enjoy the game if you see this post! And yeah I know you are in Aisle 20 but if you get to the ground early feel free to come say hi again in Aisle 24 BB/CC around seat 170!
