...and surprisingly I got a response from the Chief Scout. I included clips of his goals in the last couple of weeks and noted that he reminded me of Chris Killen (who was at Hibs a couple of years ago). Sorry for trying to steal your favourite player!! Here is the response -

Thanks for your recent email. I took the time to review the footage you sent me but didn't really see anything within that to suggest that the player is anything exceptional. I also noticed by checking the player's history that he has in fact already played a couple of seasons in the English lower leagues but seemingly didn't do enough to progress or extend his stay there. Also, with the player's age in mind we probably won't look at taking this one any further.

I would like to thank you though for bringing him to our attention and by all means please feel free to send through any other recommendations from the Australian league to our attention, particularly younger players. However, bear in mind that with strict UK visa requirements we are generally restricted to players of British/European descent.

Hope you are enjoying life over there!

So - we'll not sign Shane Smeltz - one of the leading scorers in the league and A-W regular (therefore not likely to have any issue with UK work visas), but we will sign Joe Keenan, Tard benchwarmer extraordinaire

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Does Smeltzy have (or entitled to) a German passport - seeing as he was born there?

Apparently so!

I told him that I would be back on at him if Smeltz keeps scoring the goals!

I hardly 'offered' him, I'm not his agent! I merely pointed out that he might be worth looking at...

I wouldn't object but I doubt they'd see any more in them than in Smeltz, sadly.

I thought you were talking about Football Manager, not real life - I can't believe the cheek of this!

"ooh look, the colonials are playing football too - what's this, they've got someone half good - well then, maybe I'll have my favourite Scottish team sign him".
Condescending attitude ...
The English and Scottish premier leagues might mean everything to you, but they're not our football.
Our game is right here at the stadium.

If that's your attitude you should go back to Britain (I know, it sounds like the wrong thing to be saying in a week of Winston)
Why are you in NZ?
You obviously don't want to contribute anything to our country ...

On the other hand, you may just be a random Hibs fan who doesn't even like the Phoenix - in which case I wonder why you are crowing about it on our forum.

Oooh hark at her!!

You could take the altruistic opinion that the more kiwi's playing in the leading leagues of Europe would better the chances of the AW's beating 5th place Asian/S American countries in WC playoffs.

As good as NZ Football & the Phoenix are  - I don't think the A-League is yet competitive enough that the majority of players are of the standard to compete at a World Cup effectively.

On a different note - would you have made the same 'go home' comments on a public forum to someone for being Asian?

Why is everyone that supports the Phoenix supposed to treat it as though it's a training ground for wider NZ football?

Because of the expectation built up around the team for the exact purpose by the FFA, NZF and the Phoenix themselves.

It's a difficult wee mexican stand off really. I believe the more NZers plying their trade in Europe the better for NZ football but the Phoenix winning and doing well is also obviously going to be good for the profile of Football here.
