Wellington Phoenix Men

IF the Phoenix took a game away....

...where should it be ?

I've been thinking about this in light of the Beckham disaster in Auckland and our marketing idea thread, plus seeing the interest we have on here from non-Wellingtonians.

I'm intrigued where people would like to see a game and more importantly would travel to for a Phoenix match.

I've thought of what I see as the most logical spots for this enterprise to succeed or fail and grounds that would meet the requirements for TV of an evening (most likely) game.

Get stuck in.

Napier FTW.

Kick on to Firecats with Greenie.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

A lappy bar he isn't banned from ?

(If it is in fact a bar of that type, I wouldn't know having never visited one).

Would love it to be Waikato Stadium, but the locals are a bit apathetic towards football in general**. With the right promotion it could work though. Only an hour and a half (max) away from Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua. Great stadium, great facilities, worked well for the U17 WWC.

**Prove me wrong.

You're forgetting Levin and Otaki. And Shannon. All perfectly viable options.

If Levin can host Miss Universe NZ Finals then surely if can cope with a bunch of drunk football yobs!!!

Where's Eden Park? There's no rugby on that time of the year, it'd be perfect. I think one game a year with enough hype is enough to get 10,000+ to Eden Park. Just don't get the dickheads who ran the Beckham fiasco have anything to do with it.

My heart says CHCH but my head says Waikato.

Waikato would be better because if people get hooked on the Phoenix they are able to travel to matches much easier than a CHCH based supporter.

Still, I would love it too be in Christchurch.

Napier to make up for the two cancelled trips up there already and it's easy for us Wellington type people to get up there.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

ChCh. The nix seem to have a good following down there.

What about Palmy?
Permalink Permalink

Palmy is too close. If your going to go on the road go somewhere substational, not an hour or 2 down the road.

Also Palmy, Napier etc. are much too small.

It cleary has issues. Look at all the people still trying to get in when the game has already started

So is Hamilton if we're being picky. And i won't even start on the locals there.

Three for me, and two for them.

Ecrisson stadium - I assume you mean Mt Smart now. Historically important to NZ Football.

Ignore The beckham disaster... don't start me on this.

If you played a regular A-League season game in Auckland eg, Phoenix vs Sydney FC you would get more than the average attendance at the Ring of Fire (and could probaly charge a little more too).  Auckland Football supporters would turn up to see this if organised properly (iie, Nix and YF not ARC).

There is a lot of Auckland football supporters marvelling at the success of Phoenix and would definitely turn up for one game (eg, Think NZK first home game 10k etc)

I see more Retro Ricki shirts in Auckland than I did for NZK/Kings merchandised combined.

Done right (big proviso) this could earn some money for the club (well more than a regular home game). Dunno how you would manage this with season ticket holders but I suspose there isn't any yet for 09/10 so just bang it in the T&CS.

Given the astuteness of the Nix I can see this happening. And wouldn't it be great to get a better attendace than the Beckham game.

Have you been at Eden Park with only 10k there ?  Plus if was later this year it will still be a building site around 50% of the ground.

For the purposes of this poll I have assumed this isn't a match around New Years where somewhere like Tauranga might be an option with the influx at the beaches.

CHCH did pretty well when they had a meaningless preseason game... but it would be interesting to see how many Aucklanders would get along. I am undecided.

I didn't think staff were allowed to use the customer carpark on match days

That would also be enough to sway the travel plans of this Jaffa, I might be the only one committed (sad) enough to plan his new years travel around the Nix though.

I'm a firm believer in keeping all games in Welli and I see no reason to take a game to some hovel around the country.

How's your job going there Joe?

Let's put it another way then.

If the Stadium burnt down and we had to play an evening game (therefore ruling out the Basin) the following week where do you want it played ?
