To distract us all from Terry S, Ahmed Ali Syed, Dave Burgess, "SACK RICKI", "KEEP MARCO AND WARD", sixth place, etc, etc, etc...

I was watching the game against the Furries at my Gaelic football club, minding my own business. Some guy from one of the men's teams - so Irish as to be nigh incomprehensible - came up and asked what I was watching...

"This is the A-League. Wellington versus North Queensland."
"Are you from Wellington?" he asked.
"Yeah, originally," I said.
"So this is your team?"

... yes, I thought to myself proudly. It is my team, in a way no team has been before.

Then I had to explain to them the finals format and the no promotion/relegation bit, which seemed to confuse him. But no matter.

A guy from the other side of the world who has never even been to NZ, let alone seen the Nix play, heard of our plight and coughed up $100m of his hard earned cash just to ensure the Phoenix would stay afloat.

As much as it sounds like last years NRL theme song, yep, the Nix are MY team, and i've never followed a team in any sport as closely as I have the Nix.

Yay for positivity!

My Son did a football course in the UK 18 months back, and wore his Phoenix shirt. The (ex-sunderland defender) coach was outright surprised at the existence of professional football in the Antipodes. And my son got the goal of the day.

(I got trolleyed in the pub.)

Oh hang on, is this how this supposed to work?

That looks fine to me. Just stories about how the existence of the Nix makes our world that little bit more interesting and lulzy.

I went into this pub in North Queensland once wearing yellow and black and singing to myself "your whole team is ineffectual".

A guy dressed in some green sh!t comes up to me and asks "is that your club colours you're wearing?"

I smile and say yes.

Then I chin the f#cker and walk out.

(Disclaimer: Parts of this may not be factually accurate.  But it does warm my heart)

I think the positive message that I like from the Phoenix is the merchandise is everywhere. I don't necessarily think it was the case with the Kingz or Knights. I think the country as a whole has a better adoption rate of the Phoenix as opposed to the the last two. If its got kids wanting to play for them, keeping rugby off the front page or generally being a success story for the players then thats just great.

An ideal exercise for next year would be to get Ryan Nelsens Blackburn Rovers out for a trot. The effect of that (imagine the marketing building up posterising Nelsen against his mates) would help the feel good factor for football.

But be huge. West Ham with Reid wouldn't be too bad either.

Absolutely!  Inevitably out and about in Wgtn you will see someone in Nix related gear. Always heartwarming and the stripey is so stand-outy.

Terry was talking about getting an EPL club out at some stage.

Whenever I wear my stripey in Auckland I always get someone yelling "Go Phoenix" from the car or saying something as they pass by. I don't think there is a single other sport in NZ that would get the same reaction. Awesome stuff.

When we did the Melbourne away trip, Craig and I were just leaving our hotel in Little Bourke Street on the Wednesday to walk down to AAMI Park, and there was a young guy walking down the street in a Heart shirt. He stopped and we had a good chat with him.

He started by saying "You guys are over here to support the Phoenix are you?"

"Yeah, we are"

"I hope you guys smash the Victory. I despise the arrogant bastards..."

"Good to see you wearing your Heart shirt mate... We hate the Victory too, so we wish you guys all the best."

The shine was taken off our heart-warming encounter slightly when the Yarraside came marching out of the game after full time shouting "We're gonna kill you... Die Phoenix Die... You're gonna get your F***IN head kicked in..."

But it was nice while it lasted...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

Wore my RR when in Auckland a few weeks ago..walking down Queen Street Friday lunchtime and a voice suddenly shouts "Hey...my name"  It was an ex work colleague walking up Queen Street who had seen the shirt first..then me.

Have also had to do a few "Phoenix till I die" fist chest finger sky actions in response in Welly...

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

I love how when your wearing your phoenix shirt, and you see someone else wearing a phoenix shirt, you look at each over and do a little nod and smile, and its like a cult, but the good sort.

reason to be cheerful part '3' (with apologies to Ian Drury)

signing Nix songs on the way to/from/at work = a sanity preserving joy-inducing move

starting up Nix/random football conversations with complete strangers as a result of one or both of us wearing Nix gear

spotting known Nix fans anywhere and having a Nix football conversation (nix gear an optional bonus)

wearing nix gear on the weekend and getting toots from passing cars

singing na nana na na na Danny vukovich and smiling like a f**kin idiot !

realising that Wellington is a football city!!

1. No apologies needed when it comes to Ian Drury .
2. This
3. Haven't had this happen but have had this when wearing spurs shirt (but not when wearing Newcastle).
4. This, + lots.

...and this from the man who says there's no place for women at football matches!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
