Hi guys was still recovering from the kicking ( I mean kicking) we got from Sydney F Choppers, and did a bit of forum surfing and came across this on the Victory forum.

Maybe YF may wish to reply

Another New Zealand out of A-League?

I've never really been a fan of having teams from New Zealand playing in our sporting leagues. Basketball, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Football all have a team from some part of New Zealand plying their trade in our national league (mind you, the NBL also have a team from Singapore!).

When the New Zealand Knights flopped it was a warning sign that maybe a team from across the Tasman wouldn't work in the revamped Football league. However, this season we've seen the emergence of the Wellington Phoenix. Excellently run off the field and not doing too bad on the field (better than the Knights at least).

The problem is, what happens if they ever win the A-League or finish in one of the places which ensures qualification for the Asian Champions League? Australia (and its clubs) are part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) but New Zealand (and its clubs) are not. Now an answer probably awaits me somewhere (if somebody could leave a comment with the answer that would be even better!) but I think there's general confusion over the whole matter.

According to this article:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/s...ectid=10483940
Wellington Phoenix are in line for a place in the fledgling OFC Champions League after FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticised the region's quality of performance at the World Club Cup.
Would this mean that Wellington are guaranteed a place in the "O-League" no matter how they perform in the A-League? What about if they left the A-League? Surely the standard of their players would drop due to the low atraction of playing against poor quality opposition.

No offense to our ANZAC neighbours but I think a national league should only have teams from its own country such as the Gold Coast Galaxy franchise who, according to Miron Bleiberg, are ready to go - barring a licence and a squad of players.

What do you think? Should Wellington be guranteed a place in the OFC Champions League no matter how they perform in the A-League? or should they leave the A-League to avoid confusion?

Goodness me yomcat, you should know by now that every league that an Australian team plays in is their league.

There is a mountain of debate on this elsewhere in the forum. Check out the various threads.

In short, Phoenix currently not allowed to compete in Asian Champions League. There is a current debate as to whether they should be permitted to compete in O-League. At this stage it looks like they may require Phoenix to play off against other NZFC sides to reach O-League.
